Thank you!
[edit]Hi TooncesB, thanks for fixing the Ross Dependency in this map! That was definitely the most glaring problem. However I am concerned that a few outlying islands are still missing from the map. Would you be able to add the Bounty Islands and the missing Kermadec Islands, please? --Avenue (talk) 09:04, 2 October 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Avenue.
- I'm looking into possible solutions. There isn't a lot of precedent I can find, for reuse of LINZ map data, on this Wiki.
- I generally work with USGS data, as I'm deeply familiar with their works and policies. Anvers and Ross are both covered by USGS works, and the Ross Dependency is simply a fact, it's not really map data.
- The large graphic inset for the Bounty Islands is mostly done (I worked on this, yesterday) and seems to be sourced by a different license from the main LINZ map database (I sourced the graphic in the article you linked).
- The corresponding map data appears, somewhat, to be present in NED data, which is already properly attributed.
- NED didn't seem to have the Kermadecs, but I haven't looked in the right places to verify my understanding of what they do, and do not, have on the Kermadec group --TooncesB (talk) 14:24, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
- Yes, LINZ have loosened up a lot, but their data is still not free (if by that we mean freely modifiable) as far as I can see. There is one mention on their copyright page of images "derived" from LINZ material, but it isn't clear about what's allowed in that respect.
- Raoul Island is in NED's 10m-coastline file, and the Bounty Is are in their minor islands file, but I can't see the other Kermadecs there. Even adding them as points would be better than omitting them completely.
- It's difficult to find other free sources at present, with the US government shutdown shuttering many of their websites. --Avenue (talk) 20:39, 3 October 2013 (UTC)
- I've tracked down some freely licensed LINZ data on the Kermadecs here (licensed as CC-BY-NZ-3.0). There's a lot more free data on that site too; I guess I was just looking in the wrong places before. --Avenue (talk) 11:45, 23 October 2013 (UTC)
- The render will look a lot better than just dots with those LINZ polygons you linked.
- Well done. TooncesB (talk) 20:56, 28 October 2013 (UTC)
