First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
 • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Hi PaleoMal,

it seems that you are uploading each image twice, for example i see no difference between and , so why?

kind regards,

Teun Spaans 22:24, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

is the original image for which I received permission from the author to upload the file to Commons. This should be the same as on the website where the original image is hosted. In the second image have deleted the URL that was included in the image before uploading to that website.
In my opinion the URL is not necessary for the information the image provides and therefore I deleted this part. The URL is included in the images additional text information.
Best wishes,
--Tom Meijer 22:46, 24 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Indeed I overlooked the url. Teun Spaans 04:54, 26 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Groet, --Tom Meijer 20:00, 5 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? Thank you. --Siebrand 13:18, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Tom Meijer!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Faune de France

[edit]

Hello Tom, FÉDÉRATION FRANÇAISE DES SOCIÉTÉS DE SCIENCES NATURELLES have released the "Faune de France" under CC-BY-NC-SA-2.0. (non-commercial license) only. Luckily the work by Louis Germain (1878-1942) will be public domain/free quite soon, in 2013. However the File:Hippeutis complanatus - Germain - Faune de France 1930 Fig 490-491.jpg will be deleted from Commons. --Snek01 (talk) 19:52, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Quite strange. When I downloaded Germain, the website told that this was already the case! --Tom Meijer (talk) 21:39, 24 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
I have asked them, if they could relicense it, but they will keep non-commercial license. (Individuals can very probably receive authorization for certain image for certain purpose, but not for the whole work.) Those altogether 5 images from "Faune de France" are being or already were deleted from Commons. --Snek01 (talk) 23:55, 8 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.
