Brugmansia

[edit]

Thank you for your note at my talk page. I trust your judgement, of course, and have changed the category and description... just hoping you can add images of both species and named cultivars of Brugmansiain the future Ulf Eliasson (talk) 20:26, 19 January 2010 (UTC) Are other images under species names correct? Yes I do have some I can upload, as soon as I get my hard drive fixed. To answer your question, here are the pics from Wikimedia Commons that I can verify are incorrect from a quick check:
  1. File:Brugmansia arborea (1).jpg is a multi-hybrid, not Brugmansia arborea
  2. File:Brugmansia x insignis - angel's trumpet - desc-flower.jpg is B. versicolor or a near hybrid, definately not B. insignis
  3. File:Datura versicolor1.jpg is not a versicolor, but a good example of a pure B. aurea, and should be removed from the versicolor page
  4. File:Brugmansia A.jpg is an exellent example of a pure B. versicolor, and should be added to all versicolor pages
  5. File:Brugmansia candida 0.11 R.jpg & File:Brugmansia candida 0.12 R.jpg & File:Brugmansia candida 0.0 R.jpg are B. sauveolens
  6. File:Blüte Engelstrompete Brugmansia.JPG is a Datura, not Brugmansia x candida
  7. File:Brugmansia aurea.jpg & File:Brugmansia aurea2.jpg & File:Brugmansia aurea3.jpg are pics of a multi-hybrid, not B. aurea
  8. File:Brugmansia candida.jpg is an excellent example of B. sauveolens
  9. File:Brugmansia x candida1.jpg & File:Brugmansia x candida2.jpg are hybrids of mostly B. sauveolens
  10. File:Brugmansia candida 0.5 R.jpg & File:Brugmansia candida 0.6 R.jpg are a hybrid or species of mostly B. sauveolens

Thank you for this check up. I've changed the category names of these files, but what realy should be done is renaming them correctly. But, if I understand it correct, one need to download the image and uoad it again with the new name... not forgetting to recommend deletion of the old one using template:badname. Ulf Eliasson (talk) 22:12, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I found the rename template & instructions, so maybe I'll give it try to see if I can get these existing files renamed by an Administrator without having to re-upload them. Tom Hulse (talk) 22:37, 21 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

I believe I took #2 at the Washington, DC botanic conservatory in the "medicinal plants" room. I can't remember if I got "insignis" from the plant label, but that's my best guess. However, I wouldn't necessarily trust their tags unquestioningly... -- Phyzome is Tim McCormack 02:18, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Tim I think in your notes you included the cultivar name 'Double White', which I think is probably correct. It's just the insignis part that isn't. This one has a single-slit calyx like Brugmansia versicolor or B. x candida, unlike a real insignis. Also the flowers are directly pendant, unlike insignis. Also it is a double flower, of which none are known in B. insignis.  :) Tom Hulse (talk) 02:43, 22 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Tom Hulse!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.
