Sorry. I was made a mistake. auc2104 (talk) 03:40, 19 March 2018 (UTC)

Hey, no problem! ~ ToBeFree (talk) 03:41, 19 March 2018 (UTC)

Einen Lichtscheider Wald gibt in Wuppertal nicht. Wie kommst du auf diesen Namen? --Atamari (talk) 21:59, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

Oh. Cat-a-lot kannte ich noch nicht! Danke. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 23:48, 21 March 2018 (UTC)

I also see

from my watch list that you also moved about a million other pictures of mine over here. Thank you, though I doubt that all of them will be referenced that much. Carptrash (talk) 22:51, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Transfers

Hi. Inoticed a few problems with your transfers.

  • You have not always added data to the proper fields, so the author remains unlisted. Example Example 2.
  • You have provided incorrect sourcing and dates for some images. Example
  • You have copied works with incorrect licensing (i.e., PD-US licenses for 3-D works, which we don't do). Example

In essence, please be careful with your uploads to Commons. Don't just blindly hit the transfer button; you are responsible for ensuring your own transfers are done properly.

Pardon if this sounds like I'm talking down to you. That is not my intention; I know the technical nature of this is difficult. Let me know if you have any questions. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 02:39, 15 April 2018 (UTC)

@Magog the Ogre: Hey, thank you for pointing out these issues. They come from a load of images I selected from one specific, very trustworthy user who I had talked to before. Knowing that there would be no fundamental problems, and that all of these uploads have been done in good faith, I decided to take the time to transfer them all. That must have been about 600 images, and I noticed that ForTheCommonGood does a remarkably good job at converting the "non-machine-readable" info text into useful copyright templates. My future uploads will involve more manual review again, of course.
It's not for me to decide, but I personally think that we should probably transfer all the bot-assessed files from en.wikipedia to Commons, delete the original files on en.wikipedia, and then deal with possible problems here. Commons has a lot of users who are experienced with just that: Noticing potential errors with new uploads, flagging them for review or deletion, fixing potential mistakes and improving the quality of good-faith uploads that somehow might have problems. The English Wikipedia is less suitable for that, and when a bot assessed all the files for transfer, the bot should have transferred them right away, many years ago. There is an overwhelming backlog, and if Wikimedia Commons' approach to this is "we won't take any potentially problematic images, keep them in your wiki and deal with this yourself before contacting us", then this backlog will never be processed. In my opinion, Commons should be much more welcoming of any assistance with transferring these images. At the moment, I am "responsible" for my "own transfers" -- while I understand that this approach is usually useful, it does not seem to be appropriate for this specific situation. I did not upload these images to the Wikimedia servers. Attempting to keep delete-worthy images away from Commons does not solve the original problem: These images exist, they have been uploaded, some of them are blatant copyright violations, and some really need to be deleted or drastically improved. Your current approach avoids personally dealing with a problem that the community sooner or later does have to deal with. It is drawing a line between Commons and the English Wikipedia that should not exist at all in my naive, ideal conception of the world.
Please don't get me wrong -- I'm not upset about any specific user. I am just dissatisfied by the general approach towards transferred images on Commons.
Here is how I would do it, if I could decide:
  • Transfer everything, semi-manually, filtering out only the most obvious issues.
  • Copyright complaints, questions etc. go to the original uploader.
There is a reason that the transfer backlog on en.wikipedia has over 190,000 images. Manually carefully checking each of them, avoiding any potential problem and doing all the potential work oneself will never lead to this backlog getting cleared in the next 100 years. On the other hand, there are plenty of Commons users who just seem to be waiting for these images. If that wasn't the case, I would not have received any warnings. So where is the problem? I will probably never really understand. Clin ~ ToBeFree (talk) 15:37, 15 April 2018 (UTC)
Note: Changed "over 10,000 images" to "over 190,000 images", as I have noticed today how even much larger this is than I expected it to be. Source: Number of images in "Category:Copy to Wikimedia Commons (bot-assessed)" today. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 01:58, 25 June 2018 (UTC)

This media was probably deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Minister Anthony Hylton.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the {{No permission since}} tag with {{subst:PP}} on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded ([[:File:Minister Anthony Hylton.jpg]]) and the above demanded information in your request.

I panicked when I saw the three large warnings on my talk page, expecting a block before being able to explain this. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 23:19, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

"Copyright violation" because of "previously published" transfer

Stop! This has been previously published by the original author, on Facebook, that's what the info means! This is okay! ~ ToBeFree (talk) 22:53, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

@ToBeFree: That is not the original author on Facebook. Secondarywaltz (talk) 22:57, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
The "original author" is a school page, if I can see this correctly as unregistered user. The image may well have been created by this individual. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 22:58, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
@ToBeFree: Commons needs proof and this is dubious. People often try to steal from Facebook. Secondarywaltz (talk) 23:02, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
I agree that this is dubious. Interestingly, the photo date on Facebook seems to be from 2014, when the photo was already uploaded to en.wikimedia.org. Can we assume that the user has actually previously published it to the facebook page, and that it was later taken as their header image? I can't deliver proof for someone who uploaded it in 2013; if verification is needed, the file probably actually needs to go. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 23:08, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
Photo Rus

Photo Rus appears to be an app: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.wantu.activity&hl=en --- seems okay to me ~ ToBeFree (talk) 22:56, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

@ToBeFree: That is confusing when the App displays as the copyright holder, but you seem to be correct. Secondarywaltz (talk) 22:59, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
I would have thought the same thing first, to be honest. Who programs such an app? :D Thank you ~ ToBeFree (talk) 23:00, 13 April 2018 (UTC)
How to continue?

Okay. Hi again. :) This seems to have been resolved as conveniently as possible. One image is still tagged for speedy deletion; an admin should probably decide what to do there. One is up for deletion discussion, because I agree that the source is dubious. The uploader claimed that the image has been created by themselves and has previously been published on Facebook by themselves. We can't really verify if that is true. The third image seems to have been tagged by an Android application, maybe created by developers who thought that adding their app name to the EXIF data would be a way to get free promotion.

I'd like to continue uploading pictures, and the category I'm using for that is here:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Files_prepared_for_transfer_to_Commons_by_User_ToBeFree

Can we together try to put all the wrong images out? I will, for example, do a search for "facebook" in that category now, and I'll remove all images containing "facebook" on their description pages from this category. Maybe we can find similarly good filters to avoid copyright issues together. You seem to be experienced with this; feel free to remove whatever you want from this category. Thank you very much for informing me about the possible problems. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 23:19, 13 April 2018 (UTC)

  • Sorry, but this is not my problem. You are creating trouble by not checking if images have a valid license before you transfer them to Commons. Secondarywaltz (talk) 22:27, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

@Jeff G.: Thank you... Okay, I see, I'm the Commons "uploader", so this is basically going to be my own issue here. Sometimes I wish that the various projects worked closer together. I have already identified many images that seem to be copyright-problematic, with "own works" that likely are none. To see all the images I'm already manually filtering out one by one, search this list for "removed category": https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions/ToBeFree&offset=&limit=500&target=ToBeFree
I am honestly sorry for those that I overlook and transfer wrongly. Most of them, including those you've pointed out, probably need to be removed from en.wikipedia as well. Maybe someone can help me with that; the amount of images is hard to cope with. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 02:12, 14 April 2018 (UTC)

Commons:Deletion requests/File:OBAMA FAMILY - OIL PAINTING.jpg

File:OBAMA FAMILY - OIL PAINTING.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

File:Sweetreet Logo.png has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

Thanks for uploading File:Navels.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

This file may be deleted.
A file that you have uploaded to Wikimedia Commons, File:NAJIB RAZAK- OIL PAINTING.jpg, is a derivative work, containing an "image within an image". Examples of such works would include a photograph of a sculpture, a scan of a magazine cover, or a map that has been altered from the original. In each of these cases, the rights of the creator of the original must be considered, as well as those of the creator of the derivative work.

While the description page states who made this derivative work, it currently doesn't specify who created the original work, so the overall copyright status is unclear. If you did not create the original work depicted in this image, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright.

Please edit the file description and add the missing information, or the file may be deleted. If you created the original content yourself, enter this information as the source. If someone else created the content, the source should be the address to the web page where you found it, the name and ISBN of the book you scanned it from, or similar. You should also name the author, provide verifiable information to show that the content is in the public domain or has been published under a free license by its author, and add an appropriate template identifying the public domain or licensing status, if you have not already done so. Please add the required information for this and other files you have uploaded before adding more files. If you need assistance, please ask at the help desk. Thank you!

PD-ineligible

Hello ToBeFree,

I saw you removed license tags of several files and replaced them by {{PD-ineligible}}. Please don’t do that: even though some files may look simple, most of them have required creative work from their author and are eligible for copyright. And in the case of derivative work, copyright and license have to be kept.

If you really think some files that were uploaded with a license template should be de-licensed, then ask their author and uploader, but do not change license templates on your own accord on files that you did not create.

Thank you, Akela NDE (talk) 12:31, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi Akela NDE, most of these works are derivative works of public domain files, where the creative work has been done by someone else (e.g. the Tango project), and the modification has been so simple that the result is not eligible for copyright by the modifying person. Some of these files have been created by inactive users long ago.
These simple notification icons are frequently used in other projects without a link to the image description page, or with the image's link replaced by a wikilink. If the icons were copyrightable, this would be a license violation. When I noticed this, I had a closer look at the icon licenses and sources, and I noticed that in most cases, the problem is not a lack of attribution but an incorrect assertion of copyright. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 17:24, 1 March 2019 (UTC)

Hi Finnusertop, thank you very much for the notification.
The film appears to be newer than the original upload date. The resolution is unlikely high for a movie screenshot. "Own work" and appearing in a film is not mutually exclusive. While the precautionary principle and previous deleted images by the original uploader may be relevant, the case is less clear than portrayed in the request.
Best regards,

I have given Davey2010 a final warning. If he doesn't do what I told him, a block will be in place for that loser. Эlcobbola talk 11:03, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

Pinging Эlcobbola for further checks and measures. --Achim55 (talk) 11:12, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
FWIW this user was also Davey2022 and I'm 99% convinced they're also Mike17Matthews17 ([1]), Mike socks seems to post lion images on Meta talkpages and then D22/Elk socks seem to bring up the Iggy thing here but I'm convinced both are the same person and not 2 individual people, Thanks, –Davey2010Talk 11:58, 2 February 2022 (UTC)
I'm in more disbelief here, when I first saw this page today after checking global contributions of someone, I actually thought it was the established user who started this discussion and seeing "that loser" at the end looks odd to me. I've then noticed the user name who made it's way on the page history and turns out if you say that name it does sound similar to the actual user. It appears there is possible impersonation going on here which "Mike17Matthews17" has done recently with impersonating others including me. I'm guessing a CU check on Elk O. Bowler would probably be confirmed to Mike17Matthews17 et all. I was also confused earlier on this month when I saw here that "Davey2022" was actually editing here and saying that was Davey2010 and I was also alerted in an edit summary that "Two Be Three" posted on Davey2010's talk page which I've just noticed. I can't believe this LTA is still continuing with impersonating others/making nonsense edits. Good grief. Iggy the Swan (talk) 16:28, 2 February 2022 (UTC)

Unblooking My IP

Hallo ToBeFree

I am an Arab Artist, and i was trying to make me an Artist Page on Wikipedia. so that i can try to get an Google Knowledge Panel.

But unfortunately, my IP has been blocked by you until 2026! the reason is

: Harassment

which i dont recall doing not just on Wiki but every other Platform, i respect my image as an Artist, and Platforms are like Shops for me to sell my Producet.. so why whould i ever wanna mess with that?

i am 99% positive that there is some missunderstanding happend here. i would really appreciate it if you would go ahead and Unblock my IP, because its really stopping me from making that Google Knowledge Panel.

Greetings SEEN

Hi 178.197.228.72, someone else using the same internet provider has harassed other users. You are, however, not blocked from creating a draft using the instructions at en:WP:Your first article. The block only prevents contributions in namespaces you shouldn't be using for the described purpose. ToBeFree (mobile) (talk) 21:59, 8 May 2022 (UTC)
File:Iraqichobi.ogv has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not.

Thank you!

User who nominated the file for deletion (Nominator) : George Ho.

I'm a computer program; please don't ask me questions but ask the user who nominated your file(s) for deletion or at our Help Desk. //Deletion Notification Bot (talk) 23:16, 15 May 2022 (UTC)

That must have been one of the images I batch-transferred from enwiki before "advanced-uploader" was converted to "autopatrolled". I don't do batch transfers anymore. ~ ToBeFree (talk) 17:57, 8 June 2022 (UTC)

User problems noticeboard

To answer your question: I don't think we've met before. So you likely missed that in the past few months I've solved some of the more difficult user problems that no administrator would touch. While I am not an administrator here, I have decades of experience, rarely blocking anyone. As for my own old blocks, I really don't care about them because I gave up on Wikipedia way back in 2009. But since you brought them up, on nl:Wikipedia an administrator demanded personal, off-wiki favors in exchange for my right to edit. I informed the police, and according to the cabal on nl:Wikipedia that created an eternal legal threat. On en:Wikipedia and subsequently Meta I got blocked when people called me a pedophile. The main instigators of these blocks have been desysopped and banned for abuse, one even by the WMF. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here or by mail, rather than on the noticeboards. Cheers, Guido den Broeder (talk) 21:00, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi Guido den Broeder,
Thanks for the clarification. I was confused until I saw [2], in which you clarified that you hadn't addressed me. If I had waited a moment, you'd probably have made the same edit anyway, so my message was unnecessary. In [3], I thus removed my unnecessary request for clarification.
I know almost nothing about the Dutch Wikipedia (except that, well, it's Wikipedia in a language I sadly don't speak, with its own community). Also, your account only seems to have one single contribution there. With both in mind, I didn't mention your nlwiki block; the lack of spaces in the block reason would have prevented a meaningful machine translation anyway.
Regarding enwiki and Meta: I do at least know a part of the communities and procedures there, but I lack details about your specific blocks that go beyond the publicly visible block logs. I generally trust the judgement of enwiki's and Meta's administrators while I have to admit I (yet?) lack such trust regarding yours. Of course, I may be trusting the wrong people. All I can see is that these blocks are still active as of today, and I'm not the right person to appeal them to.
If I understand correctly, your message is an implicit request not to refer to these blocks again, as you (like many blocked users) consider your block to be incorrect/unjust/abusive or perhaps at least outdated and the result of an overreaction. And as I lack details about the situation, I'll try to do as requested. I've made my point, others have expressed agreement, the requested action was performed, there's nothing left for me to complain about.
Best regards,
~ ToBeFree (talk) 21:25, 21 September 2022 (UTC)
Appreciated. The outcome of the case is disappointing, but that happens. I deliberately gave Haster2 the opportunity to remove their own comments, but it seems they never considered it. Guido den Broeder (talk) 23:01, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

Musikwunsch

Das kommt also vielleicht wirklich! ~ ToBeFree (talk) 04:18, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
Mal gucken... ~ ToBeFree (talk) 05:00, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

Dear Wikimedian,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2022 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the seventeenth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2022) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topical categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you may vote for as many images as you like. The top 30 overall and the two most popular images in each category will continue to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just three images to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 1 will end on UTC.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee
