Thanks for uploading File:John Vallier.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Hello ThePhoenixRises, the following content you uploaded violates one or more of our policies and therefore has been or will soon be deleted:

File:John Vallier.png

The Wikimedia Commons (this website) only hosts media files with a realistic educational purpose and that can be used for any purpose, including:
  • use in any work, regardless of content
  • creation of derivative works
  • commercial use
  • free distribution

See Commons:Licensing for the copyright policy on Wikimedia Commons, and Commons:Image casebook for some specific examples. Some other Wikimedia projects have different licensing policies. For example, the English Wikipedia allows fair use of sounds and photographs. This is not the case on Wikimedia Commons; "fair use" materials are not acceptable here.

Please make sure that you only upload educational content you have created yourself, those which are out of copyright, or those for which you have the required permission for the work to be used in all the ways described above. Please note that derivative works of copyrighted material are also considered copyrighted. Again, please read through Commons:Licensing, which is quite crucial, to understanding how Wikimedia Commons works. Thanks for your contribution, and please do leave me a message if you have further questions.

Yours sincerely, Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 03:23, 31 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Hedwig in Washington is this where I reply to your message?! I hope I have this right. I am still trying to get the hang of how this works.
I did message you back but I think I may have done this incorrectly. I didn't understand or know where to place the various words / brackets so thought it best I just start again. Anyway, as I see you deleted the picture, I have re-uploaded it and I hope have dealt with the copyright issue properly this time - if not please advise.
Many thanks.
Regards,

Hi! I just read your email. Thanks for that, otherwise I'd never seen this here. Here some hints to grab someone's attention: 1) User their username in square brackets, [[User:Name|Name]] Hedwig in Washington. The user will get a little info in the upper toolbar. You can do the same using the machine with the ping: {{Ping|Name}}@Hedwig in Washington: . Same effect. Or just write on the other user's talkpage.
Regarding your photograph: OTRS is always a good idea, reuploading deleted content is not. I couldn't find your email to OTRS in the system today, please post the ticket number 2015xxxxxxx here so I can have a peek. OTRS takes a little longer this time of year, many volunteers are on vacation, I'll go ahead and pick your ticket out so we can get forward with this. Thanks for the upload! Best, --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 23:15, 1 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi there! Many thanks for your reply. Ummm... what's OTRS? Apologies for the re-upload, point taken, but I didn't know how to make the alterations on the existing, and then it disappeared! I'm sure I'll get the hang of it soon enough. I don't know about a ticket number? I uploaded here: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:John_Vallier_03.png and there is text included within the upload explaining things more.
I'm attaching those notifiers, hope they work ok - Hedwig in Washington, @Hedwig in Washington: . I'm going to email you again too just in case I've added this incorrectly. Thanks, look forward to hearing from you again to sort this out. --ThePhoenixRises (talk) 17:31, 2 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thx. for your email, I prefer to get this done here. It makes things much easier. In your upload is a note stating that an email has been sent to OTRS. OTRS is a ticket system that processes and archives permissions given from copyright holders. OTRS is often used if someone else than the original photographer is uploading here. And don't sweat it. It is not that easy to find your bearings here. Please explain the following: Who made the photograph in the first place? Work for hire y/n? How did you get a hold of this photograph, meaning how did you get to be the copyright owner? Did you choose the correct license? PD is the most free license one can choose. --Hedwig in Washington (mail?) 00:50, 3 September 2015 (UTC)[reply]
