Even when using a photo from commons, you should refer to the original picture and picture owner, otherwise you are violating copyright. These are not your own pictures, but you are using them and all should be traceable. Thank you! Groucho M 20:33, 21 May 2008 (UTC)

Puzzling category

Why this Category:The falcons Castle, which has an insufficient name, omly one image in the category and redundancy of categories. May-be you intended to rename "Image:The falcons fort" into "Image:The falcons castle", but there is a procedure for that. If you really need this category, a better name should have been Category:Falcons castle at Valkenburg and redundant categories should have been removed from the image page. I am from the netherlands so i use the dutch name for the image. The other one was in english so i used that name for the cat. I can rename the cat but al category's are in english and not in dutch. Sterkebaktalk 11:26, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Maar "The falcons fort" is een engelse naam; en is hier een cat nodig voor die ene foto; en zo ja, dan moet de naam onderscheiden van andere falcons castles en als je die falcons castels in een cat wilt hebben, moet het meervoud zijn. Category:Castle Valkenburg komt goed overeen met nl:Kasteel Valkenburg. Die categorie geef je de categorieën die onder Image:RuineValkenburg.jpg staan; daarna geef je de individuele foto's 0File:.... alleen deze category:Castle Valkenburg. Je kunt met catscan (zie menu bovenaan de category-pagina)[1]

Hoi, SterkeBak, ik zie dat je de kasteelfotos verder rangschikt per provincie. Als je deze lijst nl:Lijst van kastelen in Nederland op een tweede tabblad opent, en met de muis langs de blauwe kastelen en bij rode kastelen langs de blausew plaatsnamen gaat, kun je snel zien of er afbeeldingen er zijn, die moeten dan op commons te vinden zijn; je zult zien: het zijn er meer dan in de commonscategorie Castles of the Netherlands staan. I think it is about an image I uploaded to Wiki Commons: Gallerygirl Which i wholly own, created and it is of ads I created for Fvlcrvm Gallery, which is photos of my wife, who owned the gallery at the time. Grootvader en kleinzoon - Katwijk aan Zee crop.jpg

Hallo SterkeBak, je hebt recentelijk de afbeeling Image:Grootvader en kleinzoon - Katwijk aan Zee crop.jpg die op nl-wiki staat op Commons gezet. Bij het wegwerken van de lijst 'NuCommons' viel het me op dat deze afbeelding op nl-wiki een resolutie van 897 × 1.003 pixels heeft terwijl de versie die jij overgezet hebt een resolutie van 536 × 599 heeft. Voor elke verwijdering kijk ik steeds of de afbeelding wel klopt, de resolutie hetzelfde danwel beter is (dat laatste komt soms voor als het overgezet is vanaf andere dan nl-wiki), de licentie klopt en nog wat zaken. Dat is meestal vrij saai werk want dat gaat eigenlijk altijd wel goed als het met een tool overgezet is. Maar deze keer dus niet. Op zich is het heel goed werk wat je doet met het overzetten, maar blijkbaar kan het soms dus ook met zo'n tool toch nog niet helemaal goed lopen. Ik gebruik de tool enkel om de samenvatting om te zetten. De afbeelding zelf sla ik via de computer op en zet het vervolgens met de hand weer op commons. Dus ik denk dat ik per ongeluk vergeten ben de grote versie op te slaan. Ik zal zo de betere versie even uploaden. Bedankt voor de melding! Hi, i don't know what went wrong on the local wiki's. I check the image and the licence checkt to be correct. After your message i checkt it again and the licence is still correct. So here on commons the are safe. The images are on the local wiki's already deleted so i can't check there. I hope it was a little error and it not happen many time's. If i remember correct you have given a link to a website as source. Because of that i tagt the image for no permission. If you upload a image you don't have taken yourself you must send permission to use it under the licence to Commons:OTRS. What a relief - I worry about how little I ever learnt, and sometimes remember bits and pieces - I lived in Java (Indonesia) about 11 years ago for one year and needed to read lots of dutch language materials - but never really got to speaking it SatuSuro (talk) 12:58, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Deletion Request

Hi. I saw this and this deletion requests. I can't understand perfectly english language, so I have to ask you what does "flickrwashing" meaning. The watermark on the photos is a way the photographer protect his photos from stealing, but in this case i asked him personally and he agreed to change the license. As you can se the photographer name is the same of the watermark. Elsewhere take a look at his gallery [6]. hi, i will try te explain flickrwashing. If a flickr user takes a picture from the internet en put it under a free licence on his flickr. The problem than the flickruser doesn't have the rights of the picture. I think the user on flickr has copyvio on his account. If you look at the photo you see a watermark from the author, that name doesn't match the name of the flickruser that is one reasson that i think the flickruser is not the author of the image. Flickr delays again?

Dear trusted user SterkeBak. Is the flickr bot having problems again today? Where I live in Canada, I know the flickr bot usually reviews images every day between 5:15-5:25 PM and then 6 hours later between 11:15-11:25 PM....however, no reviews has happened at either time. Its now 11:47 PM here and the flickbot has still not reviewed 6 images I downloaded thru flickr: [7] Its unfortunate because I cannot thank flickr owners for letting Commons use their photos until they have been passed. Dear SterkeBak, I don't any images on flickr to be reviewed at present...but I notice the bot has not run again. Yesterday night there were 20-25 images; today night, it is 73 images...and counting. Hi, the robot checks if the licence is the same as on commons. He also checks if the larges size is uploaded. It's not a person but he does good work.   • Hi SterkeBak. Then flickrbot is indeed a robot. It seems to have had some major "teething" problems recently as the number of images waiting to be reviewed has now increased to 93. There was no problem in August with flickrbot when I uploaded images then. It is very strange. Perhaps the designer should be told of its recent troubles. hi, i think the problem can not be solved. If you take a screenshot of a computergame you don't get rights. All rights of the image stay's by the authors of the game. If you wan't to use the image the authors of the videogame must send permission to Commons:OTRS. Equine Teeth mind map image

Hi you flagged the equine teeth image as missing permission information - I am the author, and also anything uploaded to NovaMind Connect is public as per http://www.novamind.com/connect/terms_of_use , so either way it should be adequate permission. I was not aware that even if it is my own original work, I would still have to provide proof of permission to use it - seems a little strange...

Anyway, I have fixed that image, and will put that description in other images I upload. In the notification, it said that it might be deleted in 7 days - do I need to do anything else to stop it being deleted?

It is mentioned in the 7th paragraph of the TOS: "you accept and agree that the information you provide in your profile and the documents and comments and other material you post is publicly visible, and available for use by anyone who downloads or uses it.". Is that sufficient for you to accept?

Hmmm - not sure what you are getting at - there are two different things: The service i.e. NovaMind Connect, which you can't sell access to etc, and the content (documents, comments and other material that is posted), which is public. I see no conflict here - in fact even though they deal with two different things (the system and the content), they are in agreement in that you can't use the system for commercial purposes, and the contents are public. Does this help you understand, or am I missing something?

try uploading only pictures that you have made your self. Or from flickr with the licence cc-by or cc-by-sa. Op other pictures that say that you can use them with a free licence. So that also means you can not upload: cd / dvd covers, screenshots from game's, posters and press foto's.

Hi, i have taken a look on that flickr account. All image's has the same watermark and the name on the watermark match the name of the Flickr user. I think we can Assume Good Faight and i believe the flickr uploader is the maker. So it is no problem useing this image. But i think you must tag it with {{Watermark}}. cropped flickr images

Dear SterkeBak, I had to crop these 3 flickr images: Image:Seated Olmec Jaguar from San Lorenzo, Veracruz.jpg, Image:Olmec head from San Lorenzo, Veracruz2006.jpg and Image:Mayan stela from Mexico2005.jpg Will the flickr review bot reject them or does someone approve them? I am worried because this is the first time I have to crop an image. They are from the National Museum of Mexico City or the Metropolitan Museum of NY. Hi, i don't think its a malfunction. The Flickrbot checkt of the largest size is on commons. When that isn't he upload a larger size image. The bot didn't tag the image as flickrreview not passed, or review by trusted user needed. I think the bot only check the size.   • Thanks. I once contacted Admin Nilsfanon about the flicrreview process and he told me the flickrbot sometimes fails to pass images even though they are correctly licensed. Datum foutjes bij overzetten

Hallo SterkeBak, bij de afbeeldingen

staat als datum 21 september 2008 terwijl in al die gevallen de datum van de originele afbeelding daarmee niet overeenkomt. Het lijkt erop dat er iets fout gaat met het importeren van de gegevens van het datum-veld en dat dat veld dan automatisch op 21 september wordt gezet. Graag even naar kijken. Ik weet niet precies wat er fout is gegaan, ik weet wel dat de toolserver beetje vaag deed die dag. Ik heb de datum's van de bovenstaande afbeeldingen hersteld. Ik controleer de beschrijving, licentie en auteur na het overzetten. De datum heb ik eigenlijk nooit zo opgelet. Maar dit is weer opgelost. Als de toolserver nu goed blijft werken gaan de volgende 100 weer allemaal goed.

Diezelfde dag waren er ook een of twee afbeeldingen die wel degelijk van 21 september 2008 waren. Dat is blijkbaar op een of andere manier blijven hangen. Bedankt voor het corrigeren. Ik had dat zelf ook kunnen doen, maar het leek me beter om het eerst even te melden zodat je meteen ziet dat er wat fout was gegaan. Kan gebeuren natuurlijk en mijn melding is dan ook bedoeld om je op dat probleem te wijzen zodat je ervan weet en er mogelijk wat aan kunt doen om het in de toekomst te voorkomen. Daarom is het ook goed als er zo af en toe ook eens iemand anders naar kijkt. Verder nog gefeliciteerd met je 'promotie' tot moderator (admin) op Commons. - Robotje (talk) 07:37, 8 October 2008 (UTC)

Hoi, als ik op commons een afbeelding verwijderd en hij word wel gebruikt dan komt er na 15 minuten een bot langs om globaal de afbeelding te verwijderen uit artikelen. Het logo mag gebruikt worden op de engelse wiki want de Engelse wiki staat het gebruik van fair use toe, commons echter niet. Als ze fair use afbeeldingen willen gebruiken, dan moeten ze op de Engelse wiki uploaden. Well, that's strange indeed, because I checked it yesterday, checked it this noon and checked it right know. The result is always the same: valid CC-license. So I don't know what you've done wrong, but you might want to check it again. And: no - it's not out of scope. It was in use in the German Wikipedia and even if that wasn't the case, it still illustrates a certain kind of piercing. --Lamilli (talk)

Yeah I saw a lot had Wikipedia which was strange, I couldn't find them on en-Wiki but they seemed to be used on hu-wiki in their commons versions on articles by the uploader. I just wondered if in the interests of AGF we should try to find someone who could communicate with the uploader in Hungarian. He may have just put {{Flickrreview}} on there because he didn't know what he was doing (copying someone else perhaps?), as none of his images appear to be on Flckr as far as I have found, though I certainly haven't searched for them all and pictures of chickens are pretty common there.--User:Doug(talk • contribs) 12:29, 17 October 2008 (UTC)

Why isn't this a copyvio? The clock is not in the Public Domain and we don't know the source of the number displayed (it's certainly not provided by the US Treasury). If I were to copy the actual clock and make one just like it, that would probably be a copyvio so why wouldn't the image? Graag een hele goede uitleg.

Een beetje dimmen met zo'n toon kom je nergens. Op de Engelse wikipedia kennen ze fair use waardoor daar cd / game / dvd hoesjes kunnen worden gebruikt bij artikelen. Allereerst bedankt voor je mail. Mijn gedrag op Wikipedia van de laatste tijd heeft een reden: Ik ben bepaalde mensen op Wikipedia meer dan spuugzat. Ik zou er niet eens meer terug willen. Hoe de laatste tijd met Tjako is omgegaan deed mij de druppel overlopen. Wat mij betreft dien je een verzoek in tot blokkade van onbepaalde tijd. Misschien is dit de beste oplossing. Ik hoop buiten Wikipedia om, dat wij op een positieve manier kunnen samenwerken. Wellicht hier op Commons. Maar met alle respect: Jouw gedrag op Wikisage zou je ook trollgedrag kunnen noemen, dus heilig zijn we allebei niet. Misschien kun je je inleven in mij?

Mijn gedrag kun je ook niet met een troll vergelijken. Jij kunt mijn gedrag vergelijken met een wanhopige gebruiker die naar rechtvaardigheid streeft. Die rechtvaardigheid is ver te zoeken op Wikipedia. En daardoor schieten gebruikers (waaronder ik) soms te ver door. Own work

Oef, foutje. Ik gebruik de laatste tijd Commonist voor het uploaden van foto's en dat voegt zelf de directory toe van de plaats van de foto op mijn computer. Ik zie nu door je aanpassing dat ik gewoon Own work had moeten invullen. Nu heb ik nogal wat plaatjes geschoten voor Commons, dat is dus eigenlijk steeds verkeerd gegaan. Het is opzich niet zo belangrijk dat het ineens aangepast moet worden. Het is enkel voor het gezicht mooier. Als ik me verveel zal ik je laatste afbeeldingen eens nalopen :-) Het belangrijkste is dat je ervoor zorgt dat er vrij afbeeldingen zijn. Details zijn niet zo heel belangrijk. Help please

I uploaded a few images (1, 2, 3 and five others) from this flickr user on October 22 and they were all cleared under cc-by-sa. However the user has now changed the licensing to cc-by-nc-sa for all these images. What has to be done in such cases? Are the image uploads invalid now? Hi i have tagt the images with {{Flickr-change-of-license}}. If the licence change on flickr in doesn't mean all people using the image must change the licence also. Once given a free licence all people can use it under that licence. If change later all people who use the image after the change must use the new licence. Hoi, als het goed is heb je aan de linkerzijde in het menu ergens bijna onderaan een knopje zitten met nominate for deletion. Heb je dat knopje niet dan moet je handmatig {{Delete}} erop plakken en de instructies op het sjabloon volgen. Of er nog een ander tooltje is weet ik eigenlijk niet. This morning I received a message that an image I uploaded last night was removed. The image was titled melissa8x10.jpg and the reason given was "fair use: dvd cover". Variations of this image have been used for promotional purposes, but this image was taken by me and created on my computer. I wish to submit my work and have full copyright on the image. I run the company called "ChickFight", which owns these images. Please undo deletion. Thanks!

Hi, If the company has the rights of the images you have to send a email to OTRS. If you say in that email that you are the author of the picture and that you give it free under a free licence. Ik gebruik Communist zelf niet omdat hij niet lekker werkt op mijn computer. Ik denk dat de templates in het programma verouderd zijn, In dat geval moet je ze even met de hand nalopen. Twice in a row you have deleted a screenshot that was created by myself, via the opensource TurnKey Linux project.

If the image is also on commons, why uploading it true a screenshot. The linux site's says the don't own the copyright of the images and there for i nominated for Copyvio. I do not understand why this image was deleted. The reasons are so vague and far from specific. This is so frustrating! No it did not meet the licence requirements. The page you that you linked was saying the software was under a gfdl licence but the photo where all rights reserved. With that it would have been copyvio. Later you give me a link to a commons image on that screenshot. The image on commons is under a free licence so it is oke to use. I could not see on that site the image was free so i deleted it for copyvio. The image is oke now. But the site that use the commons image was making a mistake. Hello. Image:Flatiron Building New York City 1903 Chicago Trib.jpg which you deleted did not need to be deleted. The information was all there. It just needed the tag updated from "PD" (the tag used when the image was uploaded back in 2005) to "PD-US". Be aware that Commons has some images uploaded in the early years of the project that have tags that need updating but are otherwise ok. I restored the image and updated the license tag. Sure i can explain. The browser you used is free indeed. On the bottom of the image you had the Windows Vista toolbar (that is not free). And i am not sure of the content of the website is free. Because if you make a screenshot of a internetsite, the material on that site must be free. And i don't think the logo and stuff is free.

Hi, you can ask the owner of the flickr account the change his licence. If he change his licence in CC-BY-2.0 or CC-BY-SA-2.0 you can upload them again en we can give them a good revieuw.
When that is not a option you can ask him to send a email to OTRS where he give his permission to use the images under a licence. You will get a respond with a ticketnumber. When you paste that number on the image is all will be oke.
If he choose to change the licence, please upload and leave me a message. When i have done the revieuw he can change the licence back. It is best to place that message here on my talkpage for a fast respond.

removing category "Ogg files" from "SpanishPod" files

Hi there! Sorry, I didn't see your removal of the "Ogg files" category of the SpanishPod files; therefore, I added a couple more of files with this category. The only thing I don't understand is that the Category SpanishPod doesn't yet appear as subcategory in the Category Ogg files. Removal of image.

Hello there,

It seems that you have removed an image from wikipedia commons which I have uploaded. I have no idea why you did this. I have the license to put up the image...it has been granted to me by the artist.

Hi, I have taken a loop on your deleted images. I have found:
If you have a licence for the images, you can reupload them and give them a good licence. Please make sure when you are not the author from the image that you send the permission to Commons:OTRS before you upload them.
You can also ask for undeletion on COM:UNDEL. When you ask there please give the licence for the images with your reqeust.

Question on this image

Dear SterkeBak, I have a question for you. Is this Commons image legitimate: Image:Dinogetia Bizantine Cross.jpg?

  • The original source is a French government web site and the license tag does not seem 100% correct. It says it is 2D art...whereas the object is surely 3D, I think. What is your opinion here? I am not an expert on such matters sadly. Thank You, --Leoboudv (talk) 06:12, 17 November 2008 (UTC)

  • Dear SterkeBak, Thanks for your reply. The image of the cross cannot be 2D since you can see the shadows in the image. That is why an Admin asked for this image to be deleted too: Image:Toetmoses1.jpg As for the copyright, I assume that the image belongs to the French government...although I may be wrong. They did not at all warrant a full protection, and certainly not for 1 whole month. I'd rather be more mellow with the uploader. I was trying to remove the images, as I was uncomfortable about the copyright issue. I 'think' one was produced by the US Govt, but do not know so for a fact. Other one is one I found on line and a friend colorized. Trying to be a good a citizen here. Is it all right to guess that an image is in the public domain if it depicts an old govt facility? Hi, not all images on the internet are public domein. When there is no notice on a image to say that it is free, you have to assume that it is copyrighted. I noticed that I kept you quite busy deleting all those images I uploaded recently. Sorry about that.

I just went through a very time consuming e-mail exchange with the German Wikipedia team regarding an article I posted recently. Honestly, it was quite a headache to get that article about the "Global Entrepreneurship Week" through their quality control. Now that this is finally done I'd like to have the article decorated by the "Week's" logo but I really don't feel like going through all those unreadable guidelines of Wikimedia Commons. I hold a master's degree in philosophy, English literature and economic policy but, honestly, I'm too stupid to upload a logo at Wikipedia permanently.

Therefore, if there is anything like an easy "three-steps-to-upload-a-logo-way" I would love to get learn about it. I can assure you that I do have the right to upload the "Global Entrepreneurship Week" logo. I'm one of the German hosts who coordinated the event week. I'm also looking after the German www.global-ew.de webpage where you can actually download the logo and lots of other stuff too.

Seeing that these images just consists of some typefaces and two red bars, I fail to see where the threshold of originality is met in these cases, i.e. I do not think that they are eligible for copyright.
