Arjoopy (talk) 19:18, 29 December 2023 (UTC)

@Arjoopy: Zwei Bilder konnte ich sofort zuordnen. Beide Torgau.

Siehe Diff. Beste Grüße --sk (talk) 21:03, 9 February 2024 (UTC)

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category

When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with {{SD|C2}} if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or {{SD|C1}} if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Willsdruffer Straße. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion). Jmabel ! talk 23:13, 20 March 2024 (UTC)

Hello Jmabel, I use {{speedydelete|moved to [[:Category:…]] because …}} or something. And I forget this category when I using the new tool Commons:Flickypedia. --sk (talk) 04:50, 21 March 2024 (UTC)
Something like that would work, too, but in this case you just blanked it. {{SD}} is the same as {{Speedydelete}}. - Jmabel ! talk 07:58, 21 March 2024 (UTC)

Question

Hi. Do you happen to know a good category for images of people mailing objects? I'd like to make one for people mailing postcards but I can't find anything in Category:Mail that could serve as a parent category. Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 03:00, 4 April 2024 (UTC)

We have c:Category:Postcards and people and there is also c:Category:People with objects by activity and under this we have c:Category:People using objects. Did you have an example of an image? Like this:

    Subpages for the project

Hi. I was thinking about creating subpages for the project since the main page is getting kind of long and I'd like to expand a couple of sections. For instance the todo list. We could also streamline the design a little that way to. Although I guess it doesn't matter that much, but I don't want the main page to be to long either. So would you have a problem with me creating subpages and moving some of the content on the main page to them? Adamant1 (talk) 09:55, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

Please be free to do this. When I start the project page I look at Commons:WikiProject Aviation. I like the multilingualism. So I think it would very good for future growing also to translate all of this subpages. Last days I found en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Music. There I like the idea of a Main-Discussion-Page. And I like to have something like en:Wikipedia:WikiProject Genealogy/Mailing list. Maybe first you can set a notice on the Commons talk:WikiProject Postcards about your plans and the possible structure of the subpages. Maybe other participants will see this and have other good ideas. --sk (talk) 10:16, 11 April 2024 (UTC)
Cool. I'll look into how other projects are organized and leave a note about my plans on the main talk page before I do anything in case anyone else has any ideas. Thanks. --Adamant1 (talk) 10:23, 11 April 2024 (UTC)

Fehler gemacht beim Kategorisieren von Postcards of Ohio

@CuratorOfThePast: Just an FYI, but there's a revert button on Cat-A-Lot that appears for a few second after you make an edit. I've never had any luck with it myself for some reason, but you might try that next time. --Adamant1 (talk) 22:07, 1 May 2024 (UTC)

    Question about postcard

Hi. Do you think the "Kub" thing on the side of File:La Touraine 01.jpg is a logo or something like a sticker that someone added to it after the fact? It looks like a logo to me, but I don't think I've seen one like that before. So I was wondering what you think about it. Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 08:28, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

Hmm, it is unclear. I never seen this on another postcard. It look like a onprint. I dont see edges from a sticker. I found another postcard here. It is a "Advertising Kub Bouillon". So it is no logo. --sk (talk) 08:33, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
Interesting. Good find with the other postcard. Your probably right that it's not a logo. I'll have to do more research. --Adamant1 (talk) 08:38, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
Google for "Advertising Kub Bouillon". You will find many other advertising of this french Category:Bouillon cube.--sk (talk) 08:40, 9 May 2024 (UTC)
Apparently there's some other postcards by them in Category:Maggi Bouillon. Although I still agree that it's probably not a logo. At least for the publisher. --Adamant1 (talk) 08:51, 9 May 2024 (UTC)

So it looks like we have around 20,500 files left. There appears be at least a couple of licensing templates containing the word "postcard" that I can't find the origin of or probably have the ability to edit the word out of. You can find one of them in File:2014-03-21 0035 i Brettenbach Freiamt.JPG. Is there a way you can just exclude the template from the search somehow since people are throwing a fit about the maintenance categories? There's also some files with the word "postcard" in their file names. I'm not sure what to do about those because if we rename and redirect them the redirect will still come up in search results. So maybe you can figure out a way to deal with that to. I'm not sure if redirects can be excluded from the search or not, I don't see why they couldn't be though. Thanks.

    CuratorOfThePast (talk) 14:58, 27 April 2024 (UTC)

- Noch was anderes.
CuratorOfThePast (talk) 21:50, 1 May 2024 (UTC)
CuratorOfThePast (talk) 11:27, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
--sk (talk) 12:00, 3 May 2024 (UTC)
CuratorOfThePast (talk) 20:39, 4 May 2024 (UTC)
--sk (talk) 05:22, 15 May 2024 (UTC)

Question about "Logos of postcard publishers"

Hi. Logos of postcard publishers is getting a little long in the tooth. I keep missing logos I'm looking for and I've been browsing (as well as editing) it for at least a couple of years now. So I can't imagine how anyone else can use it to find anything. Would you mind if I split it off into two different galleries, one for people and the other for postcard publishing companies like we have for categories now? Tangentially related, but I've been working on a table of postcard publishers at User:Adamant1/Postcard publishers that includes logos, word marks, stamp fields, and examples of postcards. I don't think it's ready for time primetime yet, but maybe we can transition to something like that at some point for a gallery of the main category or something like an essay on how to identify publishers once there are more images of word marks and stamp boxes on here. Thanks. Adamant1 (talk) 13:12, 30 May 2024 (UTC)

Hello @Adamant1, I think the split in two galleries is not helpful. If I find a logo on a postcard, then I don't know it is a logo for a one-men-company (people) or a logo of a big publishing company with more then one employees. I my opinion, in the future your table should be generated by Wikidata. But we have to fill Wikidata with this data. I like your columns logo, wordmark, stamp field and marquee. I think we can build for every single column an own table (or later individual wikidata-requests). So the table will not so big. This is better for searching.
If you want, we can also make a video call via Zoom, so we can talk better about the topic. We can also add more people like User:CuratorOfThePast and more.
Two month ago I bought an old book in USA: "Publishers' trademarks identified" by Walter E. Corson, Edited by James Lewis Lowe (112 pages) ISBN 0-913783-11-7 (ISBN is correct, See here) . It has a big collection of logos (many drawn freehand). I want scan this and use this for the project. Maybe you can contact this people in USA. Dr. James Lewis Lowe, Norwood, Pennsylvania) So maybe it will help you and maybe we get can upload it to Commons. Best regards. --sk (talk) 10:09, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
I can understand for publishers in Germany. At least in the United States if it's the name of a person, then we assume it's for a one man company or at least should be credited that way. For instance Frank Patterson took most, (if not all of) the photographs for his postcards, but also owned a photographic studio where he employeed a couple of people that helped him with printing them. Yet he's still the main, or only, person credited. I don't think it's helpful or would anything to make it "Category:Frank Patterson publishing company" or whatever.
But if the publisher is clearly a company there's no reason not to sub-categorize it in a category for publishing companies. Otherwise you end up putting categories for companies in something that's a child for Category:Publishers when it clearly just has to do with people, not businesses. So it's just wrong and doesn't follow the guidelines. It doesn't matter much anyway. I'd argue there would be way less mistakes by putting categories for companies in Category:Postcard publishing companies. Even if a few of them here and there might be ambiguous. I don't think it's worth ignoring the guidelines by putting categories for companies in one's clearly meant for people just because of how it is in Germany either. No offense, but we do follow English/American conventions.
Anyway, I'd probably be down for doing a zoom call with you and other people involved in the project at some point. There's some stuff that might be better going over that way compared to messaging about it on here anyway. Maybe after I finish up the couple of things I'm currently working on. I'll have to look into the book you baught in the meantime. I'll see if I can find a copy of it. Then we can work out uploading the logos to Commons. I'd like to find a middle ground between the two different categories based on people versus companies though since I don't think dumping everything into one main category/gallery is helpful long-term. I'm fine with doing the table on Wikidata's end though once the information has been added that way. Thanks. --Adamant1 (talk) 10:23, 3 June 2024 (UTC)
