Getting help

Goodies, tips, and tricks

Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
There are several tools to upload files.
Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.

Made a mistake?

Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.

Let me add a personal welcome to Commons, in addition to the bot message above. As a railfan myself, I am always glad to see new people uploading railroad images.

Commons can be a very steep learning curve, so feel free to ask questions. I'll watch this page for at least a week, but you can always post a question at User talk:Jameslwoodward.

I have just deleted Subcategory:Wandoan Railway Branch Line, Queensland and two similar pages. Commons categories, which includes sub-categories and sub-sub-categories and so forth, all begin with "Category:". All categories in actual use for images are actually subcategories, mostly down down many levels from Category:CommonsRoot.

We encourage users to upload one copy of any given image in the largest convenient size -- Commons permits images up to 100 megabytes. The Commons software scales images to any required size on the fly, so there is no reason to keep two sizes of the same file, and if we allowed it generally it would increase the storage requirements of the project substantially.

Juggler2005, I think you should be a little more careful about giving this very tough warning to newbies. At this moment, almost three months after you issued the warning, Spots has had five files deleted:

I deleted the first two because they were small versions of other uploads by Spots -- he did not understand that on WMF files are resized on the fly. The third was deleted at his own request because it is a duplicate. The fourth is PD by more than fifty years and will be restored soon. The fifth does appear to be a copyvio because it appears elsewhere on the web.

Placing this tough warning that speaks of plural "copyright violations" and plural "requests not to do so" only one minute after you tagged the only copyvio on record seems like biting newbies, which we strongly discourage. . my contributions

Hello. I am almost 80 and doing my best. I am learning and my daughter is helping me. We have asked Jim to help us also. I know about copyright and sourcing now and we are doing our best to fix it. Please be patient with me. This is a lot to learn. I know I have to list all information. Some of these photographs are family inherited so the details are unclear because the source is a relative and I own the photograghs as they were taken by my family. I was born in Darra and have long had a hobby of researching Qld train and train stations. I feel these photos are very important historically to share and I am really trying to get them up here in the right way. It's not a repeated violation it's one I'm learning to manage at 80 so please be patient and if you want to give me advice that's great as my daughter will help me. Please do not terminate my account or delete my photos - help me fix them. Thanks a lot mate.
