Hello, Spaceshuttlediscovery!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Request for Advice Granted!

[edit]

Thank you so much for your nice feedback! It means a lot to me it really does! The program I used was a vector program called Adobe Illustrator, and how I made the maps was by using existing electoral maps for reference, I simply traced the outlines of the provinces and ridings, converted the vector to a rasterized file (you can do this in the program, it simply means the vector turns into a JPEG, essentially) and then I did an image trace, which converted it all to one big vector file. I simply deleted the lines used to trace the riding outlines, leaving negative space between the riding shapes, and making it so they can be clicked on and coloured. I’d be able to make a video explaining how I did this for you if you want me to, I understand it might be a tad confusing.

I’ve made maps using the exact same process for all of Canada’s provinces and territorial ridings and recent elections. I have maps made for the BC 2017 election (which is a different map from the 2013, as two new ridings will be added) and for Ontario in 2018 (which is adding 8 new ridings, so the map is considerably different from the 2014 election map). Ive made them in vector so in case anyone wants to download them and use them for how they please. One person even used my Nova Scotia election map to make the riding locator maps for all of Nova Scotia’s provincial ridings. You know, the maps that show where the specific riding is located in a province on that ridings wikipedia page. I have neither the time, nor patience to do that so Im happy someone else has done so!

One good tidbit of advice I can give is for the colour charts for the party vote strength. Make sure the colours are as different as can be, as some regions have parties with similar colours in the same electorate. I have a chart I made that I refer to for colours for Canadian provinces. The big thing was in Canada, the Liberal Party (red) and the NDP (orange) colour charts looked too similar, so I had to make the NDP more of a brown-orange in order to make it stick out from Liberal ridings.

Another tidbit I can tell you is don’t make the line spaces between the ridings too big. I made that mistake with some of my earlier maps (which have since been corrected). Since you are tracing an existing map, the detail will be limited. Its really personal preference, make it resemble the map, but you don’t have to go to crazy detail. With Newfoundland, most of the northern part of the map is a twisted mess of islands and bends. I omitted most of the islands as I was too lazy to trace them and ultimately they didn’t matter as it was for a larger riding in the middle of nowhere. If there are islands, or a riding is non-contiguous, use a thin line stretching from the different parts to show this is one riding so people don’t get confused. Group it all together so it registers as one riding in Illustrator.

Last tidbit is for larger population centres like cities and towns - use insets. Nobody wants to strain their eyes looking at a map with itty bitty ridings in the cities next to massive rural ridings. Also make sure to mark off the area where the inset it representing. You can do this by letter or simply writing the name of the region in the corner.

I had a lot of fun doing the Canada one, and I’m contemplating doing one for Australia. Once I can find some good maps I will start on it.

Forgive me, I have no idea how to use Wikimedia’s message boards so I apologize if I posted this in the wrong place.

BC Election 2009

[edit]

Hello!

I decided to simply use the 2013 map of BC and recolour the ridings to match the 2009 results (as the 2013 and 2009 elections used the same riding layout). Ive added it to the 2009 BC election page for all to see. I made a point to state that the original design was created by you.

Emails

[edit]

Hey man, thanks for the emails! For some odd reason I am unable to view them on Wikimedia. It is quicker to get in contact with me on my email riley.richard1095@gmail.com. I cant read your last email you send me so Id really like to hear what you gotta say!
