Hello, Snoopywv!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thanks for uploading File:WVU-P1.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Hello Jarekt,

Thanks for your message, but not sure about the license subject. As you can see below the picture it has the information of my camera that I used, the date, etc .... Also I used the upload wizard and clicked on the self work button when I uploaded. Not sure how to resolve. ??????? I can go take another pic, since I live near this college. Also took pix of Marietta College, Washington State, etc .... Again please let me know what to do? ???????

Snoopywv (John)

John, What this message is trying to explain is that all files in Commons need a license, informing others under what rules they can use the file. Such license is usually chosen during the upload process. Once the file is uploaded the author has to fix it manually. For example you can replace "|Permission =" line with "|Permission = GFDL", "|Permission = cc-by-sa-3.0" or "|Permission = cc-zero". Each one of those licenses is a little different, most people do not care, but some are very particular about the license they use. Hope this help. --Jarekt (talk) 12:19, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Jarekt,

First a little background on my self. I love Wikipedia and I noticed a lot of articles on here had pictures accompanying them. Since some didn't have pictures, I thought that since I pass some buildings on my way to work, basketball, etc.... I thought "Hey, I could take a snapshot and post on here for Wikipedia." OK. So I followed the upload wizard instructions for uploading and giving permission.

Question 1. I have to now do this manually??????

Question 2. Not sure how to do this. ??????

I'm just a photog hobbyist. Not a lot of time to add pics on this although I would like to help. But I didn't know it would be this much trouble. None of my other pix seem to be of any problem. Not sure how to change the file. ????????? Should I let this pic be deleted and try uploading again? ???????

HELP

WAIT! I think I got it. I copy and pasted what you sent me. I think I got it.

It seems fine now. Thanks for fixing this and for helping to improve Wikipedia. I know there is a steep learning curve and especially the wikicode can be hard to read. That why it is important to fill all the fields in the upload form. --Jarekt (talk) 02:43, 14 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for your help. I will keep these instructions as needed for the future. I assume it will take awhile to clear up on wikipedia where this pic is used on the article WVU-Parkersburg because it is still showing over there a message about the lisence. Thanks.
