Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

Autopatrol given

[edit]

Hello. I just wanted to let you know that I have granted autopatrol rights to your account; the reason for this is that I believe you are sufficiently trustworthy and experienced to have your contributions automatically marked as "reviewed". This has no effect on your editing, it is simply intended to make it easier for users that are monitoring Recent changes or Recent uploads to find unproductive edits amidst the productive ones like yours. In addition, the Flickr upload feature and an increased number of batch-uploads in UploadWizard, uploading of freely licensed MP3 files, overwriting files uploaded by others and an increased limit for page renames per minute are now available to you. Thank you. INeverCry 19:19, 19 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Diari de Terrassa

[edit]

Hola!

Simon Peter Hughes (talk) 14:14, 7 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Would you express your opinions and recommendations about the two versions of File:The_British_Empire.png?

[edit]

Hello.

Would you express your opinions and recommendations about the two versions of File:The_British_Empire.png:

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/26/The_British_Empire.png (the broad definition of the British Empire) which I User:Maphobbyist and before me User:Brythones uploaded based on sources.

https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/archive/2/26/20180202232408%21The_British_Empire.png (the narrow definition of the British Empire) which User:Wiki-Ed uploaded.

There are disagreements on this file (which long precedes me) between myself User:Maphobbyist and User:Wiki-Ed who has disputed the broad definition also with User:Brythones long before me.

The dispute can be read in Commons:Administrators' noticeboard/Blocks and protections#Full protection for File:The British Empire.png under the section "Full protection for File:The British Empire.png"

Thank you.

discussion of brothers grim

[edit]

Hi. This is about this change that you made: https://commons.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Category:The_Wonderful_Musician&curid=75612511&diff=333891003&oldid=333595564

That tale was published in a book by Andrew Lang and that has been subcatted, properly, under the title "The Wonderful Musician". But the Lang version is not the same as the category you left this in.

There have been several versions of that first German book, which contained the tale, in several languages. Then after that, there have been several different collections, based on those first german works but not entirely reflective of it. Those versions might appear individually as a written work or as a spoken work or a performance.

To have it only appear under that one poorly defined category is just wrong.

I am open to any evidence you have that I am wrong about this!--RaboKarbakian (talk) 19:32, 7 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@RaboKarbakian: I don't really see what the problem is. I changed one of the categories that The Wonderful Musician was in from Brothers Grimm to Grimm's Fairy Tales. I did not remove the categories German fairy tales or Fairy tales by name. I did not make any changes to The Marvellous Musician (Lang) category. Many of the categories you have created recently are sub-categories of others that are sub-categories of Grimm's Fairy Tales. None of them are sub-categories of pages that are direct sub-categories of Brothers Grimm. Is "The Wonderful Musician" in Kinder- und Hausmärchen? Then it belongs in the Grimm's Fairy Tales category. I do not deny that it belongs in other categories as well. If it's in a different book by the Brothers Grimm, then there might be more to discuss.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for all of those LibriVox recordings of The Red Fairy Book you've been uploading. I am an admin on Literature Wiki, a wiki that has Instant Commons. I have created articles there about "Brother and Sister", "Frau Holle", "The Golden Goose", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Snow White", "The Three Little Men in the Wood" and "The Twelve Dancing Princesses". We also have an article about "Rapunzel". I have added a link to one of the sound files you uploaded in a "See also" section on eaach of those pages. Simon Peter Hughes (talk) 06:06, 8 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I see that me and the commons disagree about what Copyright means in the configuration. I really thought it meant the date, like the old fashioned printed copyrights. They think it means the owner of the copyright. Probably I am the one that got it wrong though. They (xiph) documented it pretty well in the documentation. Looking that up is on my list of things todo.
I might make some changes to the categories Grimm. Especially to clear my mind of the french princesses. Did you see Category:Tales from Shakespeare? --RaboKarbakian (talk) 04:14, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@RaboKarbakian: I don't know why you're talking to me about copyright. But, OK.
I actually created the Tales from Shakespeare category last March. At that time, if I remember rightly, it had 3 pictures in it. So, yes, thanks to you for adding a lot more material related to that book. The Literature Wiki article about Tales from Shakespeare has a long "See also" section with links to all the sound files from the LibriVox audiobook you uploaded. And that long list is nicely accompanied by some images you uploaded too.
So, are we cool about The Wonderful Musician category now? Simon Peter Hughes (talk) 15:41, 9 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

We might run into each other again. State of Michigan Department of Education (historical). Including this list. s:en:The school law of Michigan (1895), s:en:Suggestive programs for special day exercises and more. --RaboKarbakian (talk) 00:14, 10 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Lang subcat arrangement

[edit]

I'm not sure why these exist, whereby a tale is combined again with 'Lang' (the editor, or husband of) to separate a few or one image from the rest. eg. Category:The Princess and the Pea's has two subcategories, one on a musical, and Category:How to tell a True Princess (Lang) that has a‎ single file which is also categorised by the work, that has the creator's involved including Lang. One could argue that any parent category could be recombined if the principle of avoiding that was not followed, I believe most think that is not a good idea. cygnis insignis 20:53, 18 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

You know, I don't think it's a particularly good idea either. I'm not a fan of categories with only one file in them. I had expected that an audio file of Andrew Lang's version of "The Princess and the Pea" would at least have been uploaded by now. I guess that's not going to happen. If you want to nominate any Lang-related categories I created for deletion, I won't raise any objections. Simon Peter Hughes (talk) 05:28, 19 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, most sincerely, for understanding my concern. I'm still working on the multiple versions of tales crosswiki and completed several of the Lang coloured books at source, and feel commons is the best place to display the set of illustrations in each eg. Category:The red book of animal stories. I'll empty and tag those cats as I find them. Happy editing cygnis insignis 10:13, 19 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I just found where you had—yet again :)—identified that some files could be categorised as illustrating a particular tale; I've found that useful in the past and neglected to mention my appreciation of your efforts there. Cheers, cygnis insignis 05:47, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. And don't worry. To be a successful wiki editor, you have to be pretty thick skinned. And I accept that I sometimes make mistakes. Nothing you've said has upset me at all. Simon Peter Hughes (talk) 14:14, 22 October 2021 (UTC)[reply]
