Welcome

[edit]

Thanks for sharing your dad's photos, good job in resolving the licensing before uploading. Take care, mr.choppers (talk)-en- 18:50, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Mr.Choppers. I understand the need for Wikimedia to ensure that copyright be established on uploaded material but the process can be daunting for a newbie like me. I'm very grateful for all the assistance I got and I look forward to uploading more of my father's images. Sibsons (talk) 19:10, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

HMT Devonshire

[edit]

FYI: en:Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Ships#British troopship 'Devonshire', 1957.

Great pictures; thank you for uploading them. Are there many more? Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 19:21, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Andy, there are a couple of minesweepers, M1204 (Stubbinton?) and M1180 (Shavington?) in Msida Creek, Malta, I think taken in 1964. Also Cruiser C34 (Lion) in Grand Harbour in 1964 for Malta independence. There's also a picture of HMS Forth and her submarines which I think dates from 1957 in Msida Creek. As yet I haven't transferred these from the slides. Sibsons (talk) 20:06, 29 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I shall look forward to seeing them. I also created Category:Images by Peter Sibbald. Andy Mabbett (Pigsonthewing); Talk to Andy; Andy's edits 10:17, 30 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Nevasa

[edit]

Hey Sibsons, You recently uploaded a photo that you described as the "Nevasa" and the aircraft carrier HMS "Eagle" and also included it on the german Wikipedia Page for the "Nevasa". Thanks for the upload! :) But one small question: Are you sure the ocean liner / troopship in question is the "Nevasa"? It rather looks like either the "Kenya" (1951) or her sister ship "Uganda" (1952), both from the same shipping company. You can compare your father`s Photo with this one from the "Uganda", which was made from an similar angle: Uganda I just wanted to bring this to your attention. Maybe your father mixed up those ships. Thanks again for your nice uploads, I hope there is much to come! :) All the best Lindemann97 (talk) 18:45, 31 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Lindemann97. It was me, not my father, that identified the ship as "probably the Nevasa". The two Wikipedia links to the image were made by owners of those pages, not by me. Most of the British troopships were leased from British shipping lines. The Nevasa from the British India Steam Navigation Company (BI). By the early 1960s there was much reduced need for troopships as it was more cost-effective to move troops by air. Consequently, like many other former troopships she was converted to educational use. The SS Uganda was a BI sister ship. You can find out more on the Wikipedia page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Nevasa . Regards Sibsons (talk) 19:16, 31 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi again Lindemann97, I did look again at the Uganda while it was on the East African Service and one of the ports of call on the return route was Malta. They are very similiar looking ships. It's hard to be certain but I will add an additional note to the page of the possiblity that it might be the Uganda. Thanks and regards Sibsons (talk) 19:50, 31 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]
