Your revert

[edit]

I am wondering why you reverted my edit of File:Stockhausen March 2004.jpg, especially without giving a reason in the edit summary. It is generally accepted that items are categorised in such a way that they do not appear in different levels of the same category tree; this is explained at Commons:Categories, especially at Commons:Categories#Over-categorization. That's why, as I explained in my edit summary, I removed the parent categories Category:Digital audio workstations (DAW) (parent to Category:Fairlight (digital audio)) and Category:Audio consoles (parent to Category:Digital audio consoles). Now that the Category:Bowers & Wilkins has been created, its parent category Category:Studio monitors should also be removed. I find your revert particularly inappropriate as it also removed the links for the Stockhausen composition which I had added. I suggest you revert your revert. -- Michael Bednarek (talk) 09:17, 5 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:Thummer.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

It is the case for any copyrighted logo, content coming from an identified website or publication, or credited to somebody else than the Commons user. Hi Shoulder-synth, I'm sorry but I have to jump in here. The three files above were all licensed as PD on the english wikipedia. You can't just relicense them under GFDL. That is copyfraud. In addition, I don't know where these additional licenses came from, so if you added them, stop doing that. If the bot added them do tell the bot owner that the bot makes mistakes. If things are unclear ask somebody, please. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 08:11, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your notification!
As you said, I checked original upload log again and again, and I couldn't find GFDL tag in nowhere anywhere ... It's my mistake.
BTW: These 2 images are originally licensed under NoRightsReserved. Can't these images transfer to Commons without original author's relicense ? --Shoulder-synth (talk) 08:32, 20 January 2010 (UTC) [mod in italic] --Shoulder-synth (talk) 10:37, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]
"no rights reserved" in combination with the upload comment "Personal photo." should translate to PD-user... . So I think to change that should be okay. And I think you have to change that acctually, but I'm not sure. --Cwbm (commons) (talk) 08:45, 20 January 2010 (UTC)
OK. I've changed license tag to PD-user-w from PD-author, because the author is also en:wiki user. What a complicated system ! If current status meets deletion rule, I can't do anymore ...
Anyway, many thanks for your kindly advices. --Shoulder-synth (talk) 10:33, 20 January 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Category

[edit]

Yeah, cool. But all necessary info to prperly categorize images is the one that I've left. Just compare with Polska - and this is about whole country. Do you see sth more than couple trivial facts? So pls - don't make second articles from Commons categories, cos its not their function. Nor it is to expose ext. links in them and any other stuff like this. They serve only for purpose of categorizing files and for it one phrase description is more than enough. There is a link to enwiki article, the category has got a good, descriptive name - thats all that we need. But I see that you have this habbit not only in the discussed one. Really - it's not a place for huge descriptions and linking. It's just a media repository - if I need to know sth more, I'll follow interwikis to an wiki article. Masur (talk) 22:12, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Masur. To avoid fragmentation of discussion, please continue discussion on your talk page. Are you OK ? --Shoulder-synth (talk) 22:19, 12 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
Actually the right to edit isn't connected by any means with the nimber of pictures uploaded. And if one is doing sth wrong, like you, I wont hesitate to correct it. The place for the text is Wikipedia, here we store pictures only. More about it: Commons:Categories#Creating_a_new_category. Pls notice: A short description text that explains what should be in the category. - so in the category should be a hint what to put in it and not the description of a subject. Also here: Commons:Galleries is clearly noted: A brief description of the subject and Commons is not an encyclopedia. Our main purpose is not to educate readers through text. If they want to read more about a subject, Wikipedia exists solely for that purpose.. Is it clear now? ah, and BTW. you cannnot even call the en-wiki article as a "main one" and to link exclusively to it - you know, Commons is supposed to be multilingual - therefore sth like interwiki was invented, not be biased to any version (if many versions are avaialable of course). So I really advice you to make/change descriptions of categories for sth like: "The category groups images of guitars of XXX.inc" And XXX.inc can be a link to enwiki article (+interwikis if possible). Any longer description shouldn't be placed. The name and a short decription of category should clearly show what is in, and what to put in. As is the case for "zillions" od ofther categories, including very "major" ones like: Category:United States or Category:Ford vehicles. Do you see any external links? Any detailed description? Any elaborated timelines? Nope. Cos it's a category not an article. I just hope, that by giving you two links to tipses&tricks about categories and galeries and two examples (could be more of course) I clearly showed that your way of doing it is not the one which is and should be used. Do you have any counter-arguments for it? Like guidelines and rules stating sth different? Or a good example? Masur (talk) 07:20, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]
And as I read here: User_talk:Shoulder-synth/archive.1#Category:Harmony_Company, two other persons also pointed it out to you. Also reffering to the certain guidelines. Isn't it? Pls don't be stubborn, cos it won't make any good. Your input is highly appreciated, but it doesn't mean that you can work against rules and guidelines that were worked out here. Thx. Masur (talk) 07:35, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. Masur, I can't understand your English.

  1. Please use correct English word. Geek'ish abbreviation such like a "sth" or "pls", (I don't know what these mean), or misspelled words cause trouble on discussion. If you are not familiar with English, spell checker may help your communication. I always use it.
  2. Your attitude on this issue may be out of manner.
I wrote message on your page, but you just ignored my message and revert again, then wrote message on this page. It is out of manner.
  3. If you can take care of fairness, these discuss should be continue on talk page of the category. On such a place, someone may translate your language into proper English, and we can communicate, may be.

    • ok, like I said. I showed you some rules and examples, you got also some notice from other users, but instead you're pointing out my misspellings. Not good. Please take some time to study issues related with categories. Masur (talk) 10:12, 13 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Shoulder-synth,
Thank you for your contributions to Commons. I noticed you blanked Category:Epiphone basses on Commons. I asume you meant for the page to be deleted, but blanking the page is not the right way to do this. I'd like to strongly recommend to use type reason here and add it on top of the page you would like to have deleted; This way it will be placed on a special list that administrators check regulary for deletion. Without this it might take a long time before it's noticed. Thanks again. 16:02, 20 June 2010 (UTC)–Krinkletalk

Hello, Shoulder-synth!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Kenelis images/guitar cat spam

[edit]

Hi. Apologies if I spammed the guitar categories, I simply put the images in categories which seemed to fit best. Regarding your edits though, the other_versions section is for other versions of the same file - eg crops, colour variations, etc. It's not meant to be for images which are merely similar - that's what the categories are for. If you're using the gallery to keep track of what you've done, may I suggest using your userspace? -mattbuck (Talk) 14:51, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Mattbuck. You are too hasty. I wrote my advices on your talk page. Please consider about these. --Shoulder-synth (talk) 15:07, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. Usage of "other_versions" field for avoiding category chaos was also mentioned at Commons:Village_pump/Archive/2010Jun#Category_chaos. --Shoulder-synth (talk) 15:27, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Shoulder-synth. Please do not try and keep the Category:Electric guitars clean! Instead of removing that category (as you have done here) and complaining you should move the images to the relevant categories like Category:Men playing electric guitars. It is great that you are maintaining the category Category:Electric guitars put please be a little less defensive about that and also more open to the ideas of others. Thank you! (Note: Before I "complained", I was moving images to new subcategory Category:Female vocalists with guitars and Category:James Chilton after some research. Then, discussion was needed for replying to message from author.)
BTW: In general, is it better to avoid keeping Category:Electric guitars clean ? (anyway, I'll keep away for a while, of course) --Shoulder-synth (talk) 19:37, 20 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I reverted back - with one change. Check out the category now. I think it is better to keep the Japanese gallery on a separate page (because it will eventually become very long), but your revert was very helpful - my original version did not announce the new page clearly enough.

I hope it is OK now!

It can be arranged that the "See also" link says "a list of birds from Japan with Japanese and scientific names" (in Japanese) or similar, rather than just "日本の野鳥", but someone would have to translate it. My Japanese is so bad, I'm happy when I recognize "トリ" ;-) Dysmorodrepanis (talk) 20:20, 23 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File:PPG_WAVE_2.2.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
