Categorisation

[edit]

Hi! Thanks for your recent uploads of Oxford, they look really great! It would be wonderful if you could be a bit more specific when adding categories to your photos though - although Category:Monuments and memorials is a good start, adding Category:Monuments and memorials in Oxfordshire instead will mean that people are more likely to be able to find your images. I've gone and done some cleanup of the photos you've uploaded and given some of them their own categories which can make things more efficient (for example instead of each image of Zyczliwek the Gnome having Category:Covered Market, Oxford on, they can be grouped together into Category:Zyczliwek the Gnome which can be made a sub-category of the Covered Market category). Another simple category that can be useful are date categories, like Category:2023 in Oxford, which help people search by time and place. It can be quite complicated at first, so please do let me know on my talk page if you need any help - it'll be great to see what else you upload! Best wishes, Gazamp (talk) 22:51, 7 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers @Gazamp, I often edit late at night and sometimes I cut corners so that I can go to bed early. I did not know that non-admins could create their own categories, this will be very useful to me in the future :) Set in Stone Project (talk) 01:47, 8 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
That's fine! If you don't mind I'm going to keep cleaning up the categories on some of your uploads. Feel free to contact me if there's anything amiss or you have any questions :) Best, Gazamp (talk) 20:18, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate it @Gazamp, I'll accept all the help I can get. By the end of the year I expect to upload close to 1,000 photographs of various points of interest across Oxford. My primary concern however is that since I am creating these photographs and uploading them to use in an upcoming project for an organisation that I volunteer for, that I am keeping inline with Wikimedia's rules and guidelines. I'm putting 100s of hours of work into these photographs and my biggest fear is that all my hard work will be removed if I were to cross a rule or guideline that I did not understand. The content that you're uploading is great so far and very useful (not at all in danger of being removed as far as I can see). In terms of making my job easier, perhaps have a look at the principles of categorisation and overcategorisation - they show why I'm removing categories like Category:Stone (material) and Category:Monuments and memorials in favour of adding Category:Stone monuments and memorials to category pages. The more you can try and do this as you go, the more useful your images will be. Don't stress over it though - even if you do cross a guideline, people will come and tell you rather than just removing your images entirely. Best, Gazamp (talk) 23:28, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I immediately see how I'm guilty of overcategorisation. Starting with my next photographs (Another Time XI), I'll try things diferently. Set in Stone Project (talk) 00:00, 14 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Sorry for the slow reply. Your categorisations are definitely better but there are still some bits which mean your images end up a little overcategorised. If a person has a categeory (i.e. Elizabeth Bowen or Edmund Halley), the plaque doesn't also need to be categorised under categories related to them (i.e. Writers of Ireland or Astronomy in the United Kingdom). This is because Bowen's and Halley's categories are in (or should be put in) those larger categories themselves. Also, Category:Monuments and memorials in Oxfordshire isn't necessary where an image is also in Category:Plaques in Oxford for example. Please do have a look at the categories I'm consistently adding or removing and see if you can remember to add them when you upload. As always, just ask if you have any questions. File:Oxford mini mural tunnel 1.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Hi Set in Stone Project, the description of these images state "a stone statue". Isn't the head made out of metal? Apart from this, as this statue is still in the copyright of its sculptor, you need to check whether the location really qualifies for UK's freedom-of-panorama. --Túrelio (talk) 10:13, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You're right, is made of metal. I made a mistake because I uploaded this image as a set of other images which mostly incldued stone statues.
The location is inside a public free-entry museum so shouldn't that satisify the COM:FOP United Kingdom you sent me ? Set in Stone Project (talk) 10:50, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've added the FoP-template. Could you add the name of the sculptor to the description. --Túrelio (talk) 10:59, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I believe it is an artist called Anthony Stones. https://artuk.org/discover/artworks/dorothy-hodgkin-19101994-248671 . I have included his name in the description. Set in Stone Project (talk) 11:15, 23 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]
