Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
 • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
 • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
 • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
 • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
 • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
 • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
 • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name

correct usage of categories

[edit]

hello there, I noticed that some of your images are completely over-categorised, meaning they are in too many categories. If an image is in category A, which is in category B, it does not have to be put in C, D, or E. Please read upon Commons:Categories#Category_structure to familiarise yourself. Feel free to ask any questions. Gryffindor 13:39, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well the solution if very simple. If a category does not exist, create one. About the cavalry of the UK, it would be even better to know which regiment name or number it actually has. The main mantra is to have the most specific category as possible. I have cleaned up some of the Category:Trooping the Colour images, feel free to take a look. Gryffindor 17:08, 10 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If an image shows two buildings, then two different categories have to exist, it does not matter if they are "fused" or not. Again, the mantra is too have categories as specific as possible. Even rooms within a building can be listed in separate categories, see Category:Topkapi Palace for example. Gryffindor 19:32, 13 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sandpiper. The category was created for members of the Liberal Unionist Party, which split from the Liberal Party in 1886 and merged with the Conservative Party in 1912. Hope that helps, mattbr 07:19, 21 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

File:Bernhard Ernst von Bülow.JPG

[edit]

hi. yesterday I discovered this file was mis-named. As best I understand, what i am supposed to do in such a case i re-load it under the proper name and then mark the old version for deletion. Yet when I did, you deleted the one I had just gone to the not insignificant trouble of reloading and kept the original. Did I misunderstand what I should do or is the procedure daft? Sandpiper (talk) 01:00, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I just checked the file history. You suggested thet the original File:Bernhard von Bülow 1890s.jpg was deleted and replaced by the newly uploaded File:Bernhard Ernst von Bülow.JPG. Then I moved the old one "on top" of the new one to keep history intact. As I understand the question the current file name is correct - you just wonder about the process.
If you find a file with a bad name and it is not yourself that uploaded it you should add New name.jpg and then an admin will move the file to the new name. That will keep file history intact.
If you upload a file and make a typo you can upload a new file and mark the old one with New name.jpg. Then an admin will delete the wrong version. You can also use rename on your own files. Personally I prefer rename because it reduces the amount of space used. Files are not really deleted - they are "moved" to a hidden place. If you need the file to be renamed fast because you want to use it in an article "now" you can ask on IRC to get it renamed fast. --MGA73 (talk) 12:00, 23 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Sandpiper!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

"Ships under sail" and "Sailing ships"

[edit]

Hi Sandpiper,

To better describe what is visible in an image, there are categories for "sailing ships" and "ships under sail". The later should only include images with ships actually under sail. Please avoid removing such categories from images. --  Docu  at 12:47, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The category sailing ships is completely unusable because it has a vast (and potentially vaster) number of files. It must have sub categories added. it is no good adding 100 images of one ship, but they need to be in a sub cat. So in the case of Stad Amsterdam, either this means creating a new category containing half the images of Stad Amsterdam where it is under sail, or simply adding the master category for Stad amsterdam (Category:Stad Amsterdam (ship, 2000)) to the category of ships under sail. In by judgement it is pointless creating a new large category containing half the images of SA. A user looking for images of ships under sail can simply look at the main SA category, having found it from the 'ships under sail' category and select those showing sail. In my judgement it is better to file the SA cat in its entirity under 'ships under sail' than to add all the images with sail individually. Sandpiper (talk) 12:56, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, for 'sailing ships' read category:ships under sail.Sandpiper (talk) 13:05, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
and incidentally, I dont know whether Stad Amsterdam would in fact count as a square rigged ship, so should already be in one of the sub cats of 'ship under sail'. I suspect that it is, because it does have square rigged sails. However I am not an expert. Sandpiper (talk) 13:08, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
This is potentially a big problem if you feel the 'ships under sail' category should be taken rigorously. For example, a similar issue would apply to [File:Moshulu (ship, 1904) - SLV H91.250-725.jpg]. Should it be added to thousands in ships under sail, or should its parent cat be added? Sandpiper (talk) 13:16, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You don't need to worry about the number of images in a category. As long as the category actually describes an image, it's fine. As sample: Category:CC-BY-SA-2.0 has 2 million files!
Currently you can easily find images of Stad Amsterdam under sail with
To see the others, try
If you add Category:Stad Amsterdam (ship, 2000) under Category:Ships under sail, it's not clear how that helps as it could be done with most categories for sailing ships. We do get a lot of photos of ships taken in ports and harbours. For those, it's useful to be able to identify sailing ships that actually use sails. Just looking at images to select somehow defeats the purpose of categories.
I do agree that Category:Clippers shouldn't be on both the category for the ship and images of the ship. BTW, that the way it's outlined at Category:Ships by name. --  Docu  at 13:17, 8 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

File:Reichstag ruin showing park.jpg

Sorry about Jcb's snarky response. Commons requires images to have a free license (which can only be provided by the copyright holder, usually the author) or be in the public domain.

The picture is likely too recent for public domain. If you inherited this picture and you are an only child, you are the copyright holder. In most other cases the copyright holder(s) need to contact OTRS to provide permission. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 22:17, 26 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]
