Hello, Sandbh!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Redundant images

[edit]

Hi Sandbh,

I just noticed, that you often upload graphs with almost the same content except some moved labels / added borders / etc. Do you have a specific reason for this? If you didn't know, you can upload new versions of a file with the same filename by using the "Upload a new version of this file" link which you will find near the bottom of file description pages in the "History" section. This is also where all old versions will be kept so you can still access them if needed.

Regards, --Patrick87 (talk) 18:53, 5 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Patrick87. Thanks for the message. I didn't even know I had a user page in Wikimedia Commons. No, no particular reason apart from thinking that its probably harder to delete old graphs than it is to upload them. A combination of this disincentive combined with an I'll fix that later attitude. Oh, and I didn't appreciate you could upload new versions with the same name. Now I know. Thanks again for the message. Will do some housekeeping soon. Sandbh (talk) 11:58, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
OK, perfect! Glad I could help and thank you very much for your contributions so far, they're much appreciated. --Patrick87 (talk) 12:20, 6 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've started the laborious process of listing the redundant images for deletion. Sandbh (talk) 11:42, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the effort! You know about the Gadget "Quick delete"? You can activate it on here, and it makes nomination for deletion as easy as pressing the link in the toolbox and giving a reason for deletion. You could also consider just using the Speedy template to request speedy deletion (since you're the uploader this should be no problem). --Patrick87 (talk) 15:54, 18 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Periodic table coloring.

[edit]

On the new periodic table image you uploaded, the colorings of group 3 and group 12 aren't correct. Fix, please? 8.40.151.110 15:24, 3 December 2016 (UTC)[reply]

TeX

[edit]

English | +/−

Thank you for uploading some images! Did you know that TeX-Code is often the best alternative for mathematical formulas? TeX-Code has a lot of advantages: It has a uniform font type over all Wikimedia projects, it can easily and immediately be modified directly in the source code of the Wiki page, helping Wikimedia to distribute knowledge to all of the world. If you have questions, don't hesitate to ask me or the Village pump. If this is not the first time you receive this message, feel free to delete it. TeX-ing mathematical formulas isn't mandatory, but it would help. Thanks, and happy editing!

Thanks for uploading File:Pauling's EN table.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

JuTa 10:38, 4 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@JuTa: You will note the image page specifies its source.

This image of mathematical formulae consists only of typefaces, two proper nouns, numbers and symbols. These are not eligible for copyright alone because they are not original enough, and thus the image would be considered to be in the public domain.

Sandbh (talk) 00:20, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Then please apply the corresponding copyright tag. Thx. --JuTa 01:49, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:Bromine in a vial.png. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.

Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own).

Warning: unless the permission information is given, the file may be deleted after seven days. Thank you.

Thank you @Sreejithk2000: I'll look into this. Sandbh (talk) 00:19, 12 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Sreejithk2000: The summary page for this image lists the creator's name and the source of the image. The source page says:
"All images and videos appearing in the website 'Science made alive' are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License. Images and videos may be copied, redistributed and modified, provided a link is given to the original work. If an item is modified and a derived work is created and distributed, then this is allowed, but this derived work also should be made available under a similar license as the original work."
Is this sufficient? Sandbh (talk) 14:07, 13 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yup, that is fine. --Sreejith K (talk) 20:31, 14 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
