Use restriction tag, or delete?

[edit]

If I see one of these images, as I did in the case of File:WRCBarnstar.png my first instinct is to delete it. Now, if it's just the plain symbol, I suppose it is reasonable to have it on commons so that others can write about it in encyclopedia articles. I suppose if you are a member of the Red Cross and have to set up a shelter, and don't have any paper red crosses handy, but you do have a computer, printer, and internet connection, you could even print out a commons image and display it.

But organizations that have marks that identify them generally want to have control over how the marks are displayed, so that they can maintain a clear identity in the minds of the public. So modified versions of marks, or combinations of marks with other images, would generally offend the controlling organizations, and should be deleted.

Likewise, combining any of these marks with any Wikimedia related mark, such as in a barnstar, or some combination of the Wikimedia logo with one of these marks, would be trademark infringement and should be deleted.

Any use of one of these marks in any campaign to promote or raise funds for Wikimedia would also be an infringement, and the instance of the image within the promotional material should be deleted. Jc3s5h (talk) 15:06, 14 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]
