Flickr uploads

Hi S5A-0043, I'm very disappointed to see that you have uploaded hundreds of images from Flickr with bad filenames, missing or poor descriptions, and no categories. (There are also a number of duplicates and copyright violations.) It is your responsibility as the uploader to provide useful filenames and descriptions, plus accurate categories, for every single image you upload. I have reminded you about this previously. F2C didn’t flag them down? I’m certain I saw it stop at least a hundred of those images with the IMG file name, so I would’ve assumed they did the job for me. And for the record, I also intend on doing these corrections/G7 them when I have the time. S5A-0043^Talk 05:07, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

It is your responsibility as uploader to check every single file before you upload it. While F2C will flag some nonsense autogenerated filenames, it does not flag all of them like File:-i---i- (49040529298).jpg and File:R0002754 (53456750303).jpg. Nor does it catch uselessly generic/meaningless filenames like File:Oceanside (52227796770).jpg and File:STRAT (51717310610).jpg, nor typos like File:RTC (Las Vegas, NV) DEUCE ADL Enviro500 Mobb Museum (51717112589).jpg.

It also is fundamentally incapable of detecting a number of files that should not be uploaded in the first place:

• Images like File:MetroLink Inland Empire-Orange County Line MPI MP36PH-3C Oceanside (52227313091).jpg, File:MetroLink Inland Empire-Orange County Line MPI MP36PH-3C Oceanside (52227585649).jpg, File:MetroLink Inland Empire-Orange County Line MPI MP36PH-3C Oceanside (52227314951).jpg, and File:MetroLink Inland Empire-Orange County Line MPI MP36PH-3C Oceanside (52227796965).jpg that are not pixel-by-pixel identical but are too identical to bother uploading

It is your responsibility to scan through the files before uploading them to ensure that you do not upload bad files like these. Something like 1/4 of your most recent mass upload falls in these categories - that is hundreds of bad files! If you do not have the time to check files before uploading, and to add useful descriptions and categories quickly afterwards, then do not upload the files. (And that means all the categories that are needed: just adding one category for the rolling stock type is not sufficient.) F2C is an extremely powerful tool, but it comes with a great deal of responsibility, and thus far you do not seem to be using it responsibly. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 20:31, 16 September 2024 (UTC)

While I admit fault for some (unspecific file names for example), I strongly disagree with several points you brought above.

Images like File:LA Metro Local Route 132 NABI Metro 45C CNG North Hollywood (48943279877).jpg, File:RTC (Las Vegas, NV) DEUCE ADL Enviro500 Las Vegas Blvd near STRAT (51717322310).jpg, and File:RTC (Las Vegas, NV) DEUCE ADL Enviro500 Carson Ave @ 3rd St (51715618447).jpg where the advertising wraps means the images are copyright violations - Several DRs and UDRs have decided that images that feature a whole vehicle with elements such as copyrighted characters and ads, without focusing on the copyrighted elements, fall under COM:DM: [1] Commons:Deletion requests/File:4X-AHC Martin Harrison.jpg Commons:Deletion requests/Files in Category:JA8956 (aircraft)

Out-of-scope tourist photos like File:A freezing morning on Daytona Beach Pier (49305908553).jpg - When I searched "Photographer", I found File:Photographing sunrise 1745.jpg, which happens to be an FP. I don't see any major differences between the FP and the file you mentioned: both are people photographing sunrise.

If you do not have the time to check files before uploading, and to add useful descriptions and categories quickly afterwards, then do not upload the files. - Looking at COM:I, while I see there's a need to describe, I don't see there is any hard-enforced deadline on when. I know someone else that uses an undescriptic file name (see File:2024-09-16 16 56 15 will rename and categorize soon 62.jpg for example) and only does so several days later (file history of File:2024-06-18 11 20 24 View east along Interstate 278 (Bruckner Expressway) from the overpass for White Plains Road in the Bronx, New York City, New York.jpg) and I don't see them being given any warnings about such a practice.

And that means all the categories that are needed: just adding one category for the rolling stock type is not sufficient. - I tend to only include the depicted subject, so in other words the rolling stock. I don't find locations relevant: People typically go to a category about Times Square expecting to see stuff like the streets and the billboards, not File:(USA-New York) Metropolitan Transportation Authority 9573 NY-MTA-BE3492 M7 2024-06-17.jpg. Plus, this is extremely unfriendly towards contributors who are unfamiliar with the subject matter. I don't expect myself to familiarize myself with all 25 categories to be placed for File:Dülmen, Merfeld, Volvo PV 544 B18 -- 2021 -- 0075-9.jpg if I were to be the uploader. That takes time. So what's the rush?
