First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

License of SVG Cycling Jerseys

Dear Rz98,

You uploaded a series of cycling jersey SVG icons to Wikimedia Commons. Great work, thanks for that! See the list below for the items it concerns.

However, the shape is exactly the same as the file:Jersey yellow.svg that I created, and uploaded under CC-BY-SA. This means that if you create derivative works', you must

  1. credit the original creator(s), and
  2. share it under the same license

For most of your images, tou did not credit me as the original author of the work you made a derivative of. For some of these images, you did also not use the CC-BY-SA license.


Could you make changes to the images you uploaded? You can do this very simply by adding the following line to the icons you originally created (and removing the current license template line)

{{Self |1= cc-by-sa-4.0|author=Rz98 |attribution= Shape based upon [[:file:Jersey yellow.svg]] by [[User:IIVQ]]}}

{{Template:Change-of-license}} (only for images not licensed as CC-BY-SA)

and if there is a summary table, change the line that reads |source={{own}} with a line that reads something like

If you based this icon on another icon than File:Jersey yellow.svg, you can substitute that and credit the creator thereof as well as the authors of the work they based their work on.

Dear IIVQ,
Thanks for the heads-up, fair enough. I didn't use the yellow jersey, more the rainbow and European jersey as a basis. The latter is also the reason why I placed some jerseys under CC0 as the European jersey was released under that licence. Also, I always credited the work for the content of the jersey, but indeed I did not think about the shape. Thanks for the reply!
Yeah, in that respect you did nothing wrong, by basing it of file:European champion jersey 2016.svg , because that image was PD. However, that image should've been CC-BY-SA and cite the works they were derived of, which might be one of my jerseys or a whole chain of derivatives. Therefore, it's no more than a friendly request. I am not going to put a lawyer on your head or a deletion request on your images.
The list of your work struck me as a bit weird because some were CC-BY-SA and some were PD, and some images nicely quotes what they were derived on and others didn't. Most others who uploaded multiple images hd all of them with the same construct.

Hi Rz98!, I believe you did fix the license on the images that were not in a CC-BY-SA licence, but I don't se an attribution to the original author in most images.
You could fix that by, in the summary table, change the line that reads |source={{own}} with a line that reads something like

@Timk70: As far as I am concerned, I simply created the image in question by cropping an existing image on Wikimedia. This is properly indicated on File:Macarena Pérez (cropped).jpg. The original image was licensed under cc-by-sa. Obviously, if the original licensing was wrong, then this version needs to go as well. -- Rz98 (talk) 20:29, 28 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
