First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}
  • For more information read the full deletion guidelines

Please, close Ticket#:2012102210001497. You added the OTRS confirmation in the files but you did not close it. I sent an email to the sender without knowing that. Thank you. +PrinceWilly 18:15, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

I can't close it since you are the owner. It seems that Hersfold also sent in an email with the URLs, and as a result, https://ticket.wikimedia.org/otrs/index.pl?Action=AgentTicketZoom&TicketNumber=2012102210001522 was also created, and that one I did close. --Rschen7754 18:46, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for contributing to Wiki Loves Monuments 2012, and for sharing your pictures with the whole world!

Thanks to the participation of people like you, the contest gathered more than 350,000 pictures of cultural heritage objects from 36 countries around the world, becoming the largest photography competition to have ever taken place.

You can find all your pictures in your upload log, and are of course very welcome to keep uploading images and help develop Wikimedia Commons, even though you will not be able to win more prizes (just yet).

If you'd like to start editing relevant Wikipedia articles and share your knowledge with other people, please go to the Wikipedia Welcome page for more information, guidance, and help.

To make future contests even more successful than this year, we would like to invite you to share your experiences with us in a short survey. Please fill in this short survey in your own language, and help us learn what you liked and didn't like about Wiki Loves Monuments 2012.

Kind regards,

Picture of the Year 2013 R2 Announcement

Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2013 is open!

2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

We congratulate the winners of the contest and thank them for creating these beautiful images and sharing them as freely licensed content:

  1. 157 people voted for the winner, an image of a lightbulb with the tungsten filament smoking and burning.
  2. In second place, 155 people voted for an image of "Sviati Hory" (Holy Mountains) National Park in Donetsk Oblast, Ukraine.
  3. In third place, 131 people voted for an image of a swallow flying and drinking.

ArchiveBot

Hi, I noticed you have set up User:MiszaBot to archive your talk page. Unfortunately, the bot has stopped working, and given how its operator is inactive, it is unclear when/if this will fixed. For the time being, I have volunteered to operate a MiszaBot clone (running the exact same code). With that said, your input would be appreciated at Commons:Bots/Requests/ArchiveBot 1. Regards, FASTILY 07:41, 20 April 2014 (UTC)

Sysop

Have you given any thought to becoming a sysop for the Commons community? If so, what tasks would you want to do as a sysop? You haven't been involved in many deletion discussion, but the amount of maintenance work you do within the File namespace is astounding, and I'm really interested in having yet another sysop who spends all day deleting content anyway :) --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 14:20, 29 May 2015 (UTC)

Actually, I'm having some second thoughts given that you sought to have "Jimmy_Wales_by_Pricasso.jpg" deleted. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 14:32, 29 May 2015 (UTC)
Thanks, but I dropped another Wikimedia responsibility recently largely due to time constraints, and I would prefer not to add another so soon. As you allude to, some of my viewpoints that I express here are controversial, though I prefer to call things as I see them rather than being anti-User:X or pro-User:X blindly. --Rschen7754 01:02, 30 May 2015 (UTC)
Okay. --Michaeldsuarez (talk) 11:40, 30 May 2015 (UTC)

Important message for file movers

A community discussion has been closed where the consensus was to grant all file movers the suppressredirect user right. This will allow file movers to not leave behind a redirect when moving files and instead automatically have the original file name deleted. Policy never requires you to suppress the redirect, suppression of redirects is entirely optional.

Possible acceptable uses of this ability:

  • To move recently uploaded files with an obvious error in the file name where that error would not be a reasonable redirect. For example: moving "Sheep in a tree.jpg" to "Squirrel in a tree.jpg" when the image does in fact depict a squirrel.
  • To perform file name swaps.
  • When the original file name contains vandalism. (File renaming criterion #5)

Please note, this ability should be used only in certain circumstances and only if you are absolutely sure that it is not going to break the display of the file on any project. Redirects should never be suppressed if the file is in use on any project. When in doubt, leave a redirect. If you forget to suppress the redirect in case of file name vandalism or you are not fully certain if the original file name is actually vandalism, leave a redirect and tag the redirect for speedy deletion per G2.

The malicious or reckless breaking of file links via the suppressredirect user right is considered an abuse of the file mover right and is grounds for immediate revocation of that right. This message serves as both a notice that you have this right and as an official warning. Questions regarding this right should be directed to administrators. --Majora (talk) 21:36, 7 November 2019 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Road Marker Request

Hi Rschen, recently I have requested Road Marker for Tamil Nadu and Telangana State highways. If there was a mistake while creating an SVG file. Kindly help us work on other projects.

regards Yasercs89 (talk) 08:09, 6 December 2021 (UTC)

@Yasercs89: Thanks. I saw the request and meant to follow up but forgot to, my apologies. One thing I noticed is that the file size seems really small (59 x 79) compared to something like File:India State Highway 00 template.svg - is there a reason for that? --Rschen7754 18:58, 6 December 2021 (UTC)
@Rschen7754 by mistake i have uploaded small size, Kindly check re-upload with required size. Thanks. Yasercs89 (talk) 07:26, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
Thanks, looks better now. I will try and do it this weekend. --Rschen7754 08:01, 7 December 2021 (UTC)
@Rschen7754, shall i Upload all SVG road marker in wiki or share all svg's through Google drive link, its easy for me. Is there any special upload option available for bulk upload. And also its required any special approval for my user. - Yasercs89 (talk) 08:27, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
If it is a bot request, the bot will generate and upload all the shields. I generally only do this on weekends since it requires me to boot up my Linux VM. --Rschen7754 19:03, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
If I create other states (India) road markera and upload (SVG), Could you add in all Road marker templates(like Infobox, jct,Routelist row, etc,.)? - Yasercs89 (talk) 11:42, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
It can be done at that point. --Rschen7754 19:23, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
@Yasercs89: Did a test run today and ran into some problems. 1) Could you provide a separate version for the 1-2 digit markers? Generally these are a different font size. 2) Could you be sure to center the text before saving the template? Thanks. --Rschen7754 02:58, 11 December 2021 (UTC)
Check, Gujarath State. Thanks - Yasercs89 (talk) 08:49, 11 December 2021 (UTC)
@Yasercs89: Did Gujarat. Could you please check, and upload the other templates? --Rschen7754 18:33, 11 December 2021 (UTC)
@Rschen7754Tamil Nadu,AP and Telangana 1 digit template uploaded. Also check this [[1]]
Is Bihar state is completed? or I'll request. Thanks - Yasercs89 (talk) 17:01, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
I would go ahead and request that too. I'll see what I can get done today. --Rschen7754 21:57, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

Hi, Template:Routelist row, Template:Jct Not working these two templates Yasercs89 (talk) 06:31, 12 December 2021 (UTC)

@Fredddie: could you take a look at the above? --Rschen7754 07:02, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
✓ Done By the way, Category:Diagrams of state highway signs of India is the capstone category for state highway shields; you can see that there are no files for Bihar. –Fredddie 20:08, 12 December 2021 (UTC)
As a FYI, someone on enwiki has decided to revert changes to the template just because there are a few broken articles. I don't have the time at the moment to convince them of a more constructive way to handle this. --Rschen7754 02:12, 13 December 2021 (UTC)

Maps

Hi, would a 1952 and 1951 map from this page that KDOT published be able to be used on commons with same permission as this KDOT map? Thanks -420Traveler (talk) 02:35, 27 August 2022 (UTC)

@420Traveler: You would need to contact someone with access to that ticket, it depends on how that email was worded. --Rschen7754 01:54, 6 September 2022 (UTC)
Category discussion warning

Category:Texas_Ranch_to_Market_shields_(PNG) has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category.

In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you!
