First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki - it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

:) --Rotkraut 19:02, 5 April 2007 (UTC)

Funny!

It's funny, now I can see how much you really care and the other user who voted "to keep" that image File:Jacivelasquez.JPG, maybe the uploader is your boyfriend, friend or some, it's comical, well honestly I don't care my images at all, as you know I can do the same with your images, but I'm not like that, good luck!.--Celestial (talk) 23:58, 27 January 2009 (UTC)

Soviet Mars probes

Hi Rotkraut, you've been deleting dozens of Soviet Mars Probe images [1] because they apparently were blatant copyvios. I don't know how the images looked like, but I have some suggestions for how they're free images anyway.

  • Soviet Union had an exhibition of Mars probe replicas at VDNKh at a Moscow suburb. Perhaps a NASA photographer shot images of Mars probes there?
  • In 1975 the US and Soviet spacecraft Apollo-Soyuz made a rendezvous in space. Prior to that NASA employees went to USSR and could have taken images of the technical backups in an atmosphere of cooperation.
  • The Soviet Union didn't recognized copyright so USSR images are free.
Have a nice day. --Necessary Evil (talk) 07:15, 3 August 2009 (UTC)
First of all, i did not delete any image. I'm not an admin, so i don't have the power to delete images. But i indeed filed the deletion request you are refering to. Some comments on your suggestions:
  • Even if there may be a theoretical possibility for the images to be created by a NASA employee—i still do not believe this—this is irrelevant. For {{PD-USGov-NASA}} to apply, we need to know that the images are created by a NASA employee.
  • These images came from the NASA web site, i checked this for each of the images. On none of the NASA description pages was any statement that the images were created by NASA. The NASA webservers host lots of non-PD images and there is an explicit warning hint in the license template {{PD-USGov-NASA}} on this issue.
  • Some of the images were credited to Russian sources at the NASA web pages. At least for these images we know for sure that they are not PD-USGov-NASA.
  • Ex-USSR images are not in the PD, see {{PD-Soviet}} for details.

Thanks

I just wanted to say thank you for cleaning up after my botched translations at COM:POTD. It has been a decent amount of time since I've done translation from English to German, so hopefully you don't mind too much as I plan to continue translating the captions. VernoWhitney (talk) 16:34, 22 June 2010 (UTC)

You're welcome! And please, keep translating the image captions! In any case it's better to have a translation with some minor issue then to have no translation at all. --Rotkraut (talk) 19:31, 22 June 2010 (UTC)
Dear Commons user,

We noticed you adopted {{Mérimée}}. Thanks for your work in the field of Monuments Historiques français !

In case you did not know about it, we invite you to take a look at the Projet Monuments Historiques français.

We hope to see you soon ! — Jean-Fred (talk) 23:39, 31 August 2010 (UTC)

--Rotkraut (talk) 21:20, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Notification about possible deletion

Some contents have been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether they should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at their entry.

If you created these pages, please note that the fact that they have been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with them, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!
