First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons. You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page, write this: :Image:Foo.jpg, it makes this: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: Correct name
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines

Hello, Rosser1954!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thank you for your contributions. Your image or other content was recently deleted, or will soon be deleted, in accordance with our process and policies, because it was not, or is not, within our scope. Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. Each of these other kinds of content have their own projects: Wikipedia, Wikibooks, Wikisource, Wikinews, Wiktionary and Wikiquote.

If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Hello Rosser1954!

Thank you for providing images to the Wikimedia Commons. Please keep in mind that images uploaded to the Commons should be useful to all users of Wikimedia projects. This is possible only if the images can be found by other people.

To allow others to find the images you uploaded here, the images should be in some place that can be found by navigating the category structure. This means that you should put the images into appropriate topic pages, categories, optionally galleries, or both of them (see Commons:Categories). To find good categories for your images, the CommonSense tool may help.

You can find a convenient overview of your uploaded files in this gallery.

The important point is that the images should be placed in the general structure somewhere. There are a large number of completely unsorted images on the Commons right now. If you would like to help to place some of those images where they can be found, please do!

Thank you. — Manecke 23:15, 15 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Thanks for uploading Image:Gazebo by Weir ECP.JPG. I notice the image page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page. If the content is a derivative of a copyrighted work, you need to supply the names and a licence of the original authors as well.

If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag, then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL to release it under the multilicense GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or PD-self to release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Hello Rosser1954

Having looked at your photograph entitled Powgree Railway Bridge.JPG I would ask exactly where is this bridge?. I lived and played around that area as a child and written a book on my escapades there but don't recognise the bridge and as far as I know the Caledonia Railway Line was not near Kersland Glen. There was a railway line from the mine that was upstream from the Tianna Falls which crossed the Powgree Burn via a wooden bridge which no longer exists.

Thanking in in anticipation of an early reply.

Bill.

Hello Bill,

This is at the end of the old railway cutting that runs down from the site of Brackenhills station and crosses the Powgree Burn where the old cutting leading off to Kilbirnie East railway station has been filled in. The line closed in the 30s I think and came off the main line at Giffen - Kilbirnie Junction as it was called. You wrote a book - how can I get a copy?

Roger

I assume that images such as the following are either scans or digital crops of the book(s). In that case you are not the author! Thanks! Duly noted.

and plenty more in your gallery. Unless you know better, these should probably be marked "unknown artist" or similar. Thanks for your comments on en.wiki - we all need to learn. It is worth "signing" your Talk page posts with "~~~~" Finavon (talk) 19:28, 31 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Station categories

[edit]

I have been tidying up the "Railway stations in ..." categories. You will find that all the stations with multiple images now have their own subcategories. If you upload a photo survey for a station without its own category then please create one and move any existing images from its county category into the new one.

Keep up the good work. Geof Sheppard (talk) 07:26, 21 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

John Dunlop

[edit]

Hi, I am interested in the image of a memorial to John Dunlop Esq you have uploaded to the Susanna Montgomery, Countess of Eglinton and Dundonald, South Ayrshire pages. The description you have given says James Dunlop, but my interpretation is that it reads John Dunlop.

I am wondering if you have any further information regarding this factor (or agent as I understand this to mean)? My specific interest is that my g-g-g-grandfather was a John Dunlop from Scotland born in 1777. If reading memorial correctly (which is very hard to do) it was dedicated in 1836 when Dunlop was 60. This would align with the birth date I have.

Thanks and best regards,

Jeremy

Kerse Bridge house

[edit]

My grandmother Mrs Kirk managed the Railway inn at the turn of the last century and my father Alexander Kirk spent his boyhood years there. I have a photo of him outside the then 'Kirk's railway Inn' around 1910. He later attended Spier's school and served in France from 1917, graduated in medicine at Glasgow university and spent his professional life in England. I was excited at seeing the photo of the present Kerse bridge house . My photo is in an album but will try and upload it .

Any idea what the house round the corner on the edge of the Dubbs water was built for? Water bailliff for the loch? RSLlGriffith (talk) 20:16, 17 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Barskimming Mill plaque

[edit]

Hi

My great, great, grandfather William Alexander was the owner of this mill. I have visited the mill a few times but I never found the plaque stone in your photo. Can you remember the position of the plaque on the building.

Hello,

The plaque is situated above the large warehouse style entrance at the back of the mill, just after the old resedential flat. An interesting site with a lovely situation. I hope that the old mill gets converted into flats to save it from total ruin. RSLlGriffith (talk) 11:37, 16 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

[edit]

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

SEEKING PERMISSION TO USE 3 OF YOUR IMAGES

[edit]

Dear Roger Griffith (Rosser1954)

We are visual artists and academics who are currently working on a chapter in a book entitled ‘The Photograph and the Album’ (published by MuseumsEtc http://museumsetc.com/blogs/news/7422776-forthcoming-the-photograph-and-the-album). We are also contributing to the editorship of this volume.

Our chapter is examining the role that the internet plays in acting as a 'giant photograph album'. We have taken this principle and have begun to look for images, searching – as many of us do – under our own names, curious to find out what images appear.

The following images came up in relation to one of our surnames:

Miller family of Chapeltoun - http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Miller_chapeltoun.JPG Victorian Miller’s Sitting Room - http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:The_Victorian_Miller%27s_sittingroom.JPG Miller’s House - http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Hessilhead_Mill_and_Miller%27s_House.JPG

We are interested in using the image in our chapter and want to confirm that you agree that we can do this in line with the statement that appears in Wikimedia Commons which is as follows:

“I, the copyright holder of this work, release this work into the public domain. This applies worldwide. In some countries this may not be legally possible; if so: I grant anyone the right to use this work for any purpose, without any conditions, unless such conditions are required by law.”

To be clear about our use of the image, it will appear as part of a sequence of images for which we will provide full captions and acknowledgement (in reference to the information which appears on the webpage provided above).

We hope you are willing to give permissionand would appreciate if you would confirm this via this email - r.miller@salford.ac.uk . We would also be very grateful if you could inform us of any other parties from whom we should seek permission in reference to these images, if you are aware of any such parties.

We would appreciate it if you could respond by Friday April 19th 2013.

Thank you for your consideration & please don’t hesitate to contact us if you have any questions.

Very best regards

Rosie Miller & Jonathan Carson r.miller@salford.ac.uk

Thanks for uploading File:Robert W Montgomery of Bogston 001.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.

Pay attention to copyright
File:Spier's Geocoin.JPG has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. 2012 Picture of the Year: A pair of European Bee-eaters in Ariège, France.

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2013 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eighth edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2013) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year were entered in this competition. These images include professional animal and plant shots, breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historical images, photographs portraying the world's best architecture, impressive human portraits, and so much more.

There are two total rounds of voting. In the first round, you voted for as many images as you liked. The top 30 overall and the most popular image in each category have continued to the final. In the final round, you may vote for just one image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 7 March 2014. https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Special:MyLanguage/Commons:Picture_of_the_Year/2013/Introduction/en Click here to learn more and vote »]

Andricus grossulariae gall pictures

[edit]

I'm sorry to tell you that the nice pictures you have labelled Andricus grossulariae are certainly Knopper Galls. I will move them to the Andricus quercuscalicis category and remove them from associated wikipedia articles. In the meantime I will try and find some substitute pictures for grossulariae. As the text of the wikipedia article states, the galls are on the acorn cup, whereas those in your pictures are clearly developing on the acorn. Furthermore this species was not known as far north as Scotland in 2010 (and may not yet have reached Scotland): researchers at Edinburgh University did not have access to local material. Reminder: Round 2 of Picture of the Year 2016 is open!

[edit]

You are receiving this message because you voted in R1 of the 2016 Picture of the Year contest.

Dear Rosser1954,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the second round of the 2016 Picture of the Year competition is now open. This year will be the eleventh edition of the annual Wikimedia Commons photo competition, which recognizes exceptional contributions by users on Wikimedia Commons. Wikimedia users are invited to vote for their favorite images featured on Commons during the last year (2016) to produce a single Picture of the Year.

In Round 1, there were 1475 candidate images. There are 58 finalists in Round 2, comprised of the top 30 overall as well as the top #1 and #2 from each sub-category.

In the final round, you may vote for just one or maximal three image to become the Picture of the Year.

Round 2 will end on 20 April 2017, 23:59:59 UTC.

June 2017 in Scotland etc

[edit]

Hi there, when creating categories such as Category:June 2017 in Scotland could you please use the following template to categorise it as it links it to all the appropriate categories and indexes. Below in an example for June 2017.

The '06' index should follow a space and the number adjusted according to the month. The country name 'Scotland' should also follow a space as the four countries of the United Kingdom are indexed at the top. The year without a space should be used on the latter category.

Any trouble, give me a shout.

2011 Shawnee Dollar picture request

[edit]

Hello Rosser1954,

I saw that you uploaded a picture of a 2002 shawnee coin ( File:2002 Shawnee Dollar.JPG ). I would like to know if you have a picture of the 2011 one (that one ), it features the 1811 comet which had a deep impact in Shawnee culture and I wish I could add it to the related article. However I did not manage to find a free version of that picture. That's the reason why I ask you if you can make a free picture of it, or if you know where I could find a free one. I will add it into the French version of the 1811 comet article (French is my mother tongue) and into the English one.

Best wishes, Gokimines — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gokimines (talk • contribs) 17:59, 5 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Unusual old gravestone, Dunscore Old Kirk, Merkland, Dumfries and Galloway, Scotland

[edit]

Hi there Rosser1954, this image you have previously attached is the front of a family headstone. I have notes on what was written on the back but I need to verify dates and names listed on the note as there appears to be some inaccuracies and I'd like to check if it was a transcription error or what was actually written on there. I don't suppose you took a pic of the back of this headstone did you? It would make my day as no other pics survived! I'm going thru your submissions to see if any other family graves from those cemeteries but you're quite photographer and there are so many. I don't suppose you have a catalogue of names anywhere do you? I'm looking for all McCubbin(g) ones from the area. Sometimes spelt McCabben, McCaben, McCubin etc. I do have a pic of this same headstone taken in the 90s when there was not so much lichen on it but it is still very hard to read the inscription. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Misidentified flower photographs

[edit]

Hi Rosser1954,
I just moved your two misidentified cranesbill photographs (the leftmost two photographs in the gallery above) to Category:Geranium sanguineum and corrected the description accordingly. Geranium sanguineum has got single flowers, wheras the other Geranium species have always pairs of flowers. In addition, the colour of the flowers and the shape of the leaves is quite different. Of course, the files should be also renamed. In addition, I wonder, whether the rightmost image in the gallery might be Silene latifolia instead of Silene dioica. Are you sure about your ID? Best regards --Robert Flogaus-Faust (talk) 19:28, 10 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Additionally:

looks to be wrong: note that the leaves are a completely different shape. I suspect it's a Ranunuclus spp., but cannot be sure. Can you confirm that you actually know these plants and that you are confident in your ID? Semudobia (talk) 11:52, 5 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    • Hello Robert, Thank-you for assistance with these species.

S.dioica could well be S.latifolia as the hybrid is usually light pink.

I agree that the leaves are those of a Ranunculus species. Best to request deletion of the photograph as these species are tricky enough with the specimen in front of you, let alone a photograph.

fish carving in Glencoynedale

Hi there, Rosser 1954, I do hope I'm not committing a terrible blunder by posting here. I've been trying to find out more about the fish carving in Glencoynedale - do you have any info for me? I've found absolutely nothing online except your photo. Also it would be brilliant if I could use the picture alongside a knitting pattern I've based on it (yes, really). Where is this plaque located?

[edit]

Back in 2013 you uploaded a photo of a memorial plaque File:John Peebles, memorial plaque, Irvine.JPG. The file appears in the Battle of Bushy Run Wikipedia article but there is no information there or at the file description stating where the plaque is located. I've been reading up a tiny bit on Captain Peebles - he had quite an interesting life, having participated in the Battle of Bushy Run, subsequently fought in the American Revolutionary War and then his diary of that war was published in 1998. So, I am interested in where this plaque is - I thought that information would be good to have with the photo. Shearonink (talk) 05:03, 27 June 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I also stumbled across some recursively defined categories by yours: Category:St Andrew's Church, Loxton, Category:Quadrant Tower, Category:Inverkip parish church, Category:Kilmaurs fire engine or (mistyped) Category:Ligature "THE" (find more on [1]): No category is self-defined, recursive definition will cause endless loops in categories, etc. In general it is the goal to insert categories into existing branches of the category tree, for buildings that might be the location (the village, the municipality, ...), the type of building (a castle, an observation tower, a church), some time related categories like the year of creation, non-obvious stuff like an architect, like any listing, etc. Let's have a look at Category:Inverkip parish church, which is a duplicate of Category:Inverkip church () and will give you a sense of what categories are needed / wanted / expected / sound. In the case of Category:Inverkip parish church please do not create duplicates, but move (recategorize) images to Category:Inverkip church and mark the old category as Duplicate for deletion. best --Herzi Pinki (talk) 11:22, 2 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I removed most self-categorizations (sample).
Some categories are now on Commons:Report Special:UncategorizedCategories, as they didn't have an regular parent categories.

Robert Burns Putting Stone

[edit]

Hi Rosser1954, I'm doing some research on the Burns Putting Stone. I've been in touch with the folks at Ellisland Farm. Other than knowing a stone was left there by Burns. They can't confirm your picture is said stone. Could I ask how you came to know this stone and named it as such. Many thanks, Calum Stonemad19 (talk) 21:21, 19 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I recall being told that it was by a guide. I wrote the Ellisland Wikipedia article and I reference the putting stone with the reference - Peel, R (1984). Anecdotal Evidence. Burns Chronicle. Fourth Series : Volume IX. You will find the Burns Chronicle online under the Robert Burns World Federation website. I have read somewhere a story about Burns showing off his strength by lifting the stone when others present could not. You could also search the archive of 'Researching the Life and Times of Robert Burns Club 2262' on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/554450588374356 rgriffithk@aol.com RSLlGriffith (talk) 09:57, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Robert Burns was keen on stone putting and left his favourite putting stone at Ellisland Farm near Dumfries. If he saw anyone using it whilst he lived there he would call "Bide a wee" and join in the sport, always proving that he was the strongest man there.
