Sadly, it is not possible to upload MPEG movies to WikiCommons, video must be Ogg Theora. See Commons:File types for allowed file types. The reason is, I believe, that MPEG is a proprietary format.
Also, since the University of Illinois do not allow commercial use of this video, it will have to be deleted. Thuresson 01:20, 23 July 2005 (UTC)
Ok, thanks

[edit]I have absolutely no idea if any better pic exists of the San Francisco Bay area, and I have no intention of searching the world for one. I leave that to you if you are set on featuring a pic of the area. All I know is that the composition of that pic is far from great. Whether or not it does, it appears to cut the Bay off, and offers no appropriate framing, real focus, or other intriguing aspect. I appreciate that it shows all the relevant areas in good detail and so on, but that does not, in my opinion, mean it should be featured, or the FP section would be inundated by pics of Earth from space. Thanks, Peregrine981 14:30, 6 September 2005 (UTC)
Hi - thanks for providing images to the commons. I just noted this picture you uploaded - it's a good illustration, but the image quality is pretty bad (gray fuzz around black lines, etc). I guess this is because of the JPG compression - please provide drawings as PNG, or even better, as SVG. JPG is only good for fotos.
Also, please remember to put images into categories and/or gallery pages. That way, they can be found and used by others. I have added this picture to Category:Female genitalia. If you are not sure about the category, choose a more general one, such as Category:Anatomy.

Hi - thanks for your response. I'll try to explain a little about SVG (maybe i'll put this info on Commons:SVG in the a little while, these questions come up frequently). So, here goes:
- SVG is not really a programming language but markup-language for graphics. It's for drawings what HTML is for text: instead of storing pixels, it stores shapes. For more information, see en:Scalable Vector Graphics.
- The advantag is that because it stores shapes, it can be scalled at will without any loss, and it can be edited later much easily - you can just take shapes, move them around, change colors, etc. The files are also much smaller.
- SVG files can be created and edited "by hand", as text files. But there are several graphics programs that support SVG directly. You can find a list of SVG viewers and editors at <http://www.w3.org/Graphics/SVG/SVG-Implementations>. I can recommend InkScape (Linux) and SodiPodi (Linux/Windows). There are other editors for windows, but I have not tried them.
- You may also want to look into OO-Draw (part of the OpenOffice suite, free software). It supports PNG (I think), PDF and also SVG (but rather badly, i'm told). The native format of OO-Draw is also accepted on the commons, but it can not be used as an image directly.
- There is no good way to convert pixel-graphics to SVG. It's like trying to create HTML from a text you scanned: there are pixels, and the software has to guess what is meant by them. There are programs (called "tracers" or "vectorizers") that try to do this, but the results are often not what you expected. Re-Drawing is usually the better choice. (Note that bitmaps can be included in SVG images - but that does not help at all, it just puts a useless wrapper around the original file. This leads to confusion sometimes).
- if you want to work with pixel graphics, please use JPG for fotos only - PNG is a good choice for draings (but SVG is better). MS Paint is one of the worst graphics programs out there - good alternatives would be The Gimp (free software), PaintShop (freeware) and PhotoShop (for money). All of those (and any serious graphics program) support PNG.
I hope I have clarified things a bit. And thanks again for providing images to the commons! -- Duesentrieb(?!) 20:08, 3 October 2005 (UTC)
I just found SVGMaker - it costs $50, and allows you to create SVG from many windows programs by providing a "Pseudo-Printer". This would not help you with Paint, but you could create SVG from a drawing created in MS-Word, etc. -- Duesentrieb(?!) 20:11, 3 October 2005 (UTC)
Excuse me, I need your opinion
[edit]Well, i said that because we can't find anything, probably is more educational something what gives us all names vulva, labiae minora/majora, clitoris, etc. But is only for that.

Image Tagging Image:Khartoum - Sudan - 1926 - Tramway.jpg
[edit]
Thanks for uploading Image:Khartoum - Sudan - 1926 - Tramway.jpg. I notice the 'image' page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is therefore unclear. If you have not created this media yourself then you need to argue that we have the right to use the media on Wikimedia Commons (see copyright tagging below). If you have not created the media yourself then you should also specify where you found it, i.e., in most cases link to the website where you got it, and the terms of use for content from that page.
If the media also doesn't have a copyright tag then you must also add one. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then you can use GFDL-selfto release it under the GFDL orPD-selfto release it into the public domain. See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.
Note that any unsourced and untagged images will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have uploaded other media, please check that you have specified their source and copyright tagged them, too. You can find all your uploads using the Gallery tool. Thank you. Hello, and thank your for sharing your files with Commons. There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. Please remember that all uploads require source, author and license information. Could you please resolve these problems, which are described on the page linked in above? Thank you. Image deletion warning | Image:Coriolis.gif has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this image, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. |

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful informations about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 00:30, 8 September 2009 (UTC)

Death Valley Photo
[edit]Hi Roger469, I would love to use this photo for artwork for an album cover for a musician that I manage. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a2/Death_Valley,19820816,Desert,incoming_near_Shoshones.jpg Do you think it would be possible for us to get the rights from whoever took the photo?
Thank you so much!
It is possible. The rights of this photo are free.--Roger (Messages) 15:34, 14 March 2016 (UTC)
