Lack of evidence of copyright status of some uploaded images
[edit]I have been checking the copyright status of some images that you recently uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Please could you give details (including links to licence details on verifiable web pages) of why you think the following images have the copyright licences that you included in their description pages?
Image | Copyright licence given by you | My comments |
---|---|---|
Geology of Canada.jpg | CC-0 | According to https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/terms-conditions/10847 "Unless otherwise specified, you may not reproduce materials on this site, in whole or in part, for the purposes of commercial redistribution without prior written permission from Natural Resources Canada." I think this implies that the license cannot be CC-0 because the copyright owner retains some commercial control. |

Major Volcanoes of Canada.jpg | CC-BY-2.5 | According to https://www.nrcan.gc.ca/terms-conditions/10847 "Unless otherwise specified, you may not reproduce materials on this site, in whole or in part, for the purposes of commercial redistribution without prior written permission from Natural Resources Canada." I think this implies that the license cannot be CC-BY-2.5 because the copyright owner retains some commercial control. |

- Good catch. I'm a little fuzzy on copyright issues. I just assumed that all government works are in the public domain. That's too bad. Maybe we could get written permission? RockingGeo (talk) 21:31, 1 March 2019 (UTC)
I recommend that you read the Wikimedia Commons copyright policy. I think suitable copyright permission for these particular images is very unlikely to be obtained from the copyright owners because the governments of Canada and France would have to change their entire copyright policies. You could ask them but meanwhile the presence of these images on Wikimedia Commons is a copyright violation. If Canada and France ever do change their policies to be compatible with Wikimedia Commons, the images could then become eligible for upload and use. — GeoWriter (talk) 17:21, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- Besides from the US, what other countries provide their content in the public domain? RockingGeo (talk) 18:45, 2 March 2019 (UTC)
- I've found out that the Canadian images are actually licensed under the Open Government Licence - Canada 2.0. [1] This is completely acceptable for Wikipedia. I'll reupload them. RockingGeo (talk) 14:58, 7 March 2019 (UTC)
Where have you found that the images (that you uploaded, were deleted and you intend to re-upload) are licensed under the Open Government Licence - Canada 2.0? This seems to contradict/be incompatible with Natural Resources Canada's "non-commercial" restriction that I listed in the above table. GeoWriter (talk) 20:26, 24 May 2019 (UTC)
On https://geoscan.nrcan.gc.ca/starweb/geoscan/servlet.starweb?path=geoscan/downloade.web&search1=R=208175, you'll see that it says, "Please note the adoption of the Open Government Licence - Canada supersedes any previous licences." It says this for all GEOSCAN publications. I've just been too busy to reupload the images. RockingGeo (talk) 20:36, 24 May 2019 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Stylolites in Jurassic limestone.jpg
[edit]Copyright status: File:Stylolites in Jurassic limestone.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Stylolites in Jurassic limestone.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
