Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel irc:wikimedia-commons #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing. |

Sincere apologies
[edit]I really am not that grumpy usually!
Ok - if you look here you will see I have someone on en wp who seemed determined to blame me for deleting what is an image whose licensing is not permitted on Commons unreasonably.
So and again with apologies. The image was on en wp licensed as fair use which is fine there. For some reason it was transferred here where "fair use" is not ok (please do not ask me why :), individual projects do their own thing!) and so it was tagged by another user & deleted by me.
That is the story so far. So what do we do about it. Does someone you can get hold of 'own the copyright - if so they can license it if they are prepared to do so - and we can have it here. If not then it really is a case of "fair use" (this will explain it better than I can) and then only en wp would be able to host it as our policies stand.
Do get back to me if I can help & please forgive me but if you look at my en wp page you will see I seem to have explained it a few times already :(. Regards --Herby talk thyme 12:59, 23 October 2008 (UTC)
- Ok thanks for that. But I went to the page you gave and it says:"Fair use is a doctrine in United States copyright law that allows limited use of copyrighted material without requiring permission from the rights holders,". Firstly it is not copyright, and secondly it has the explicit permission of the owners of the picture. As it says on answers.com: Courtesy of Christine Mary (Devol) Wardlow (his daughter). Uploaded, with permission, by William G. Wardlow, Mr. Devol's grandson. So I see a discrepancy between that and the definition of fair use.
- Having said that I have no idea why anyone would move the picture to media commons and I don't personally care if it is there or not so the above is academic. I just want a nice neat concise description of industrial robots and a picture of the founder. Any help you can give me on how to upload a photo would be appreciated. It's probably very simple if I look at other examples.
- Frankly I don't need a profile here on media. I only did that because all I got was an IP address and the ID was not carried over from Wikipedia. So I would like to delete this or am I too late. It's all I can do to keep checking in on industrial robot without getting drawn in to media discussions! :)
- I read the tirade from Bangthedash! He was quite outspoken at the time when we agreed that Devol was the founder and not Engleberger! But I do understand how he feels as the photo has been there for years. I think he is also not aware that it was moved to wikimedia. I don't know who did it. I will also write to him. Robotics1 (talk)
