Hello, Rion!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Don't want to excessively quibble, but I really don't see how Asexuality falls under "LGBT"... AnonMoos (talk) 09:36, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If it's about homo- and bisexuality together with transgender people and queers, then why not include asexuality as well as pansexuality into it as well? People surely try to find about those sexual minorities as well from the LGBT category. They are sexualities as well as are homo- and bisexuality. --Rion (talk) 14:23, 9 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Unfortunately, asexuality doesn't fall under any one of "L", "G", "B", or "T", while pansexuality would. I'm not sure that you're really doing LGBT any favors by redefining it as kind of an indiscriminate "leftovers" grab-bag category which includes anything other than married heterosexual couples in the missionary position... People are likely to search from Category:Gay pride flags and Category:SVG flags - LGBT about other sexualities and genders as well as homo- and bisexuality, transgenders and queers. We should probably be more accurate and redefine the categories to be Category:Flags representing sexuality and Category:SVG flags - sexuality. This way, everything should be able to be categorized properly without mistake. How does that sound? --Rion (talk) 08:45, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Would probably be better as Category:Sexual identity flags (to match galley Sexual identity symbols, formerly named Sexual identity flags). However, this would not replace "Gay pride flags" or "SVG flags - LGBT" (which would be subcategories of Category:Sexual identity flags, not the other way around). "Flags representing sexuality" sounds like it might mean flags visually depicting genitals or sex acts on the flag... AnonMoos (talk) 20:17, 11 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]
