You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.BotMultichillT 06:13, 8 May 2009 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Melbourne_Infobox.png
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Melbourne_Infobox.png. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |
THis image needs to detail the works it was created from with the appropriate attribution to the original authors under the terms of the CC or GFDL licenses they were released under. Mfield (talk) 19:51, 14 May 2009 (UTC)

montage licenses
[edit]Hi,
You need to be far more careful about what images you montage together, how you comply with their license terms, and how you licence the resulting montage.
Your Dubai montage page does not contain attributions for the constituent images, even though some are licensed CC-BY or CC-BY-SA, and therefore require attribution under the terms of their licenses.
Your Melbourne montage contains a couple of images that are licensed only CC-BY-SA-3.0 and/or CC-BY-SA-2.5, yet you've released the montage under CC-BY-SA-1.0. This is a violation of the terms of those licenses, which state "You may distribute... a Derivative Work only under the terms of this License, a later [my emphasis] version of this License with the same License Elements as this License, or a Creative Commons iCommons license that contains the same License Elements as this License". And then, if that weren't bad enough, you've gone and released it into the public domain as well. You can't do that.
Your 442px - London Lead Image.jpg montage uses Palace of Westminster, London - Feb 2007.jpg, which is released solely under CC-BY-SA-2.5. Yet you've released the montage, a derivative work, under the GFDL, something you have no right to do.
If you're going to continue creating these montages, you need to very carefully review your understanding of these copyright licenses, and be scrupulous in following them.

File:Dubai_Montage.png has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Perth montage
[edit]I am interested in the Perth montage you made. I want to make a similar one and was wondering if you made it on Photoshop and what width and height the montage and image included was in pixels when you made it. 49.176.33.145 03:38, 28 May 2013 (UTC)
Your account will be renamed
[edit]Hello,
The developer team at Wikimedia is making some changes to how accounts work, as part of our on-going efforts to provide new and better tools for our users like cross-wiki notifications. These changes will mean you have the same account name everywhere. This will let us give you new features that will help you edit and discuss better, and allow more flexible user permissions for tools. One of the side-effects of this is that user accounts will now have to be unique across all 900 Wikimedia wikis. See the announcement for more information.
Unfortunately, your account clashes with another account also called Rhyshuw1. To make sure that both of you can use all Wikimedia projects in future, we have reserved the name Rhyshuw1~commonswiki that only you will have. If you like it, you don't have to do anything. If you do not like it, you can pick out a different name.
Your account will still work as before, and you will be credited for all your edits made so far, but you will have to use the new account name when you log in.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Yours,
Keegan Peterzell
