First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki—it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel irc:wikimedia-commons #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper

  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|correct name}}

Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Kategorien

Hallo Rensi, da du ja doch schon eine Zeitlang hier bist und eine Menge hier beigetragen hast, bitte beachte beim Hochladen von Bildern diese auch in die entsprechenden Kategorien einzusortieren. Es ist unüblich, Bilder in eine übergeordnete cat abzulegen, wenn es darunter Ort-cats gibt. Wenn einer mal nicht vorhanden sind, einfach selber anlegen (copy & paste). In Villages in Landkreis Roth habe ich ein paar Bilder als Beispiel von dir einsortiert. Es wäre nett, wenn du den Rest auch so machen könntest. Hallo Rensi, hier ein Beispiel. Dein Bild Hofstetten HIP (1).JPG hast du in die Kategorie Category:Villages in Landkreis Roth einsortiert. In dieser Kat sollten jedoch nur Kategorien von den Orten bzw. Ortsteilen selbst und keine Bilder einsortiert werden. Leider fehlte aber noch eine Kategorie für Hofstetten und ich habe sie daher gerade selber abgelegt, siehe Category:Hofstetten (Hilpoltstein). Deine Bilder hatten zwar die Kategorie schon, aber nur als Rotlink. Jetzt gibt es sie und kann auch in Wikipedia und Wikidata richtig verlinkt werden. Durch die neue Kategorie sind die Category:Districts of Hilpoltstein und Category:Villages in Landkreis Roth schon abgedeckt und damit unnötig. Für das Bespielbild hab ich die in deinem Bild gelöscht. Jetzt taucht das Bild auch nicht mehr in auf in Category:Villages in Landkreis Roth. Wenn andere Kategorien fehlen, einfach neuanlegen mit dem Inhalt des Beispiels Category:Hofstetten (Hilpoltstein) aber ggf. halt anpassen. --Derzno (talk) 15:15, 31 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Ich blicke leider immer noch nicht durch. Vielleicht erklärst Du mir die richtige Vorgehensweise an einem anderen Beispiel. Ich möchte das Bild Löffelhof HIP.jpg hochladen, passend zu dem Artikel, den ich gerade schreibe. Es handelt sich wiederum um einen Ortsteil von Hilpoltstein im Landkreis Roth. Also was muss ich nun in das cat-Feld eingeben? Was muss ich ansonsten beachten? - Wie kann ich denn für Bilder, die ich bereits hochgeladen habe, eine neue Kategorie anlegen, so wie Du bei Category:Hofstetten (Hilpoltstein) vorgegangen bist? Danke für Deine Geduld mit mir! --Rensi
Bevor du das Bild hochlädst, lege die Kategorie für den Ortsteil Löffelhof wie folgt an:

Gehe auf irgendeine Ortskategorie (Beispiel: <link>https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Category:Jahrsdorf_(Hilpoltstein)</link>und ändere in der Eingabezeile deines Browsers dann "Jahrsdorf (Hilpoltstein)" zu "Löffelhof (Hilpoltstein)" und mit return abschliessen. Eine neue Seite wird geladen und dann auf das Feld "Erstellen" klicken. Jetzt in das Feld diesen Text '''[[Category:Districts of Hilpoltstein]] [[Category:Villages in Landkreis Roth]]''' eingeben und speichern. Damit hast die Kategorie angelegt und kannst die Bilder hochladen. Wenn du schon hochgeladen hast, einfach genauso eine Kategorie anlegen. Du erhältst diese Nachricht, weil du bei Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 teilgenommen hast.

Auch in diesem Jahr beteiligt sich Deutschland wieder am internationalen Fotowettbewerb rund um Bau- und Kulturdenkmale. Bisher wurden bereits mehr als 18.000 Bilder hochgeladen – und wir würden uns sehr über weitere Bilder von Dir freuen. Noch bis zum 30. September 2016 kannst Du Deine Bilder hochladen. Alles Wissenswerte erfährst du auf der Mitmach-Seite.

Außerdem möchten wir Dich einladen, ab 12. September 2016 an der Vorjury teilzunehmen. Diese sichtet und bewertet die hochgeladenen Bilder und ermittelt so gemeinsam mit der Jury, die im Oktober tagt, die Sieger von Wiki Loves Monuments 2016 in Deutschland.
