If we are going to rename this, then we might as well name it something useful. There is a chimney in the middle of this view, is this a picture of the mill and surrounding village? Or just a picture from the mill? ... --Tony Wills (talk) 07:14, 26 April 2011 (UTC)
- This is probably a view of the village of Holmbridge, Yorkshire. A weavers mill does not typically have such a chimney. Racconish 06:20, 30 April 2011 (UTC)
Tip: Categorizing images
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 12:56, 30 August 2011 (UTC)

tea kettle raccoon
hi;
just a minor note, since your name suggests that you are a fan of raccoons; but the "tea-kettle raccoon" in the painting you uploaded is actually a tanuki (raccoon-dog) in the japanese folktale bunbuku chagama
(i changed the categories for the file, as appropriate)
hope you will upload more stuff! :)

2012-11 allègement de description
Bonjour Racconish,

Filemover
Hi Racconish, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:
- Use the CommonsDelinker link in the Rename template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one. Or, if there was no rename-request, please use the Move & Replace-tab.
- Please do not tag redirects as Speedy. Other projects, including those using InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references.
- Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

File:LG20120911-216.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.
The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.) Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

Films
Hi. Could you explain (or if there is discussion elsewhere give me a link) edits like this removing "film" categories in favor of "video"? (Seems contrary to use on en:W, and I'd think noting whatever the original medium was would be of some relevance.) Cheers, -- Infrogmation (talk) 20:05, 27 April 2013 (UTC)
- Hi Infrogmation, taking this example, I found there were ogv files in both Category:1905 films and Category:Videos of 1905. I thought the best would be (a) to put Category:Videos of 1905 in Category:1905 films and (b) to keep all non ogv files in Category:1905 films and put only ogv files in Category:Videos of 1905, leaving other documents such as photograms, fragments or posters in Category:1905 films, to group files in a coherent manner. I hope this makes sense. Doing the same for Category:Silent films and Category:Silent films videos. Started with 1881, not finished yet. Please let me know what you think. Cheers, — Racconish Tk 20:36, 27 April 2013 (UTC)

This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:A Gentleman of Quality.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Merci à toi --Montbarrey (talk) 06:55, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
- J'ai contacté Magog the Ogre. Cordialement, — Racconish Tk 10:08, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
- In this case, it seems the best answer is to provide the source as Private collection. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:28, 15 January 2014 (UTC)
- Also, if the original prints have fallen out of copyright, then you should probably mark the image as Licensed-PD-Art (I will gladly do so if you indicate how they fell out of copyright). However, we could leave the license as is if Montbarrey is uploading the images with permission from the original copyright holder, so that the license applies worldwide (see Commons:Hirtle Chart). I realize this is a very complicated answer to a simple question, but copyright is itself quite complicated, especially when dealing with different laws and traditions per country. Magog the Ogre (talk) (contribs) 15:34, 15 January 2014 (UTC)

- Thanks for your help Magog the Ogre. I have followed up with a discussion with Montbarrey (in French) here. He says the paintings are in a private collection in France, he photographed them himself and the painted portraits are considered to be contemporary of their subjects (before 1781 for File:Etienne Ignace Desbiez (1709-1780), Avocat-général au Parlement de Besançon.jpg, before 1821 for File:Claude Alexandre Desbiez baron de saint Juan (1747-1820).jpg, before
18741864 for File:Alexandre Desbiez baron de Saint Juan (1820-1873).jpg and before18731863 for File:Charles Desbiez baron de Saint Juan (1785-1872).jpg) (actually, says Montbarrey, the date of 1835 inonthe painting). Hence Private collection and Licensed-PD-Art would be appropriate. Does this address all your concerns ? Cheers, — Racconish Tk 06:08, 17 January 2014 (UTC)- Yes. I will mark it with licensed PD-art; this isn't important for Commons as much as it's important for reusers of the content in places like France which don't have PD-art protections. I hope it wasn't too much of a hassle, but a description like this one isn't very helpful for figuring out the proper source and verifying the license (e.g., not all paintings that look old are in fact old). Portraits Desbiez de Saint-Juan
Help Racconish,
--Montbarrey (talk) 10:30, 17 January 2014 (UTC)

Man and woman dancing a waltz (1887)
Hi there. Thanks for slowing down the single dancer and removing the watermarks. Unfortunately for the dancing couple something seems to have gone wrong: the movement isn't fluent any more. Maybe because the order of the individual images has been changed? Like number 11 right next to number 1 and before 2? Feel free to try again, thought. Sadly his comment was removed, accompanied by the remark "removing inappropriate message". Copyright status: File:Rattles from Pompeii.jpg
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Rattles from Pompeii.jpg.
Thank you. |

Copyright renewal check
Hi Racconish, how did you check the copyright renewal status for the Betty Boop videos you uploaded? I've nominated two for deletion because there had been renewals in 1959. Note that the license tag you used claims "the copyright was not renewed" but the records show otherwise. Please see the link I left in the Minnie the Moocher nomination to see how to check for renewals, as they can be difficult to find. -84user (talk) 01:58, 23 October 2014 (UTC)

- Grand merci ! J'ai un message d'erreur quand j'essaie d'afficher au format d'origine. Cordialement,
Karsh
Bonjour Racconish,
Cordialement, -- Asclepias (talk) 23:25, 7 December 2014 (UTC)
- @Asclepias: Je comprends le problème. J'ai tout proposé à la suppression. Cordialement, — Racconish 📥 09:57, 8 December 2014 (UTC)
