First steps tutorial

Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content).

You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki.

Getting help

More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump.

Goodies, tips, and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your graphic abilities.
  • You can find the files you have uploaded in your Uploads.
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~.
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:File:Foo.jpg]], which produces: File:Foo.jpg.
  • You may enable gadgets (custom features) for your account.
  • There are several tools to upload files.
  • Have you edited Wikipedia before? This guide might be useful.
Made a mistake?
  • Do you want to have a file renamed or moved? Use the move link and wait for an authorized user to rename it.
  • Do you want to have your recently uploaded picture removed? Tag it as {{speedy|reason here}}. For more information read the deletion guidelines.

Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Sieh dir die Category:Kleiner See (Blankenhof) mal an, darin sind beide Kategorien, die du wieder einsetzen wolltest, schon als Oberkategorie enthalten, somit wird die Kat Kleiner See (Blankenhof) sowohl in der Kat Blankenhof sowie auch in Lakes of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern über den Bildern gelistet. Dateiverschiebung, Kategorien

  • Die Datei File:Seeufer.JPG habe ich mal nach File:Seeufer Torgelower See.JPG verschoben, einmal ist er aussagekräftiger, und dann besteht bei solchen Namen und immer die Gefahr, dass unerfahrene Benutzer die Datei mit einem ganz anderen Bild gleichen Namens überschreiben. Der Torgelower See wird's ja wohl sein? Ich habe die Stelle auf dem Luftbild in http://www.gaia-mv.de/gaia/gaia.php gefunden, es liegt scheinbar sogar das selbe Boot da.
  • Die Kategorie Lapitz habe ich aus den Bildern zum Salzsee wieder rausgenommen. Die Salzseekat befindet sich bereits in der Category:Lapitz. Genauso muss bei der Kategorienvergabe Penzlin nicht die Kat Landkreis Müritz vergeben werden, da sich die Kat Penzlin in der Kat MÜR befindet.

It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Auf Mithilfe angewiesen

Hallo Leute!

Zumindest ich bin auf Mithilfe anderer User, die hier einen Großteil ihrer Freizeit freiwillig und statistikverbessernd verbringen, angewiesen, weil Wikipedia und Wikimedia Commons teilweise unglaublich verkompliziert sind. Da wird mit Kürzeln um sich geschmissen, dass jeder Abkürzungsfanatiker seine helle Freude hätte!

Und auch an diesem schlechten Beispiel "Brandenburger Tor", korrekt soll es wohl eingegliedert werden in „Brandenburg Gate", wer soll das raffen mit der richtigen Kategorie? Ach so, wird ja alles "verenglischt", also ist es nur eine Frage der Zeit, wann es nicht eine deutschsprachige Kategorie mehr gibt.

Auszug: Versuche, die Kategorie zu finden, die Inhalt und Ort des Bildes am spezifschsten beschreibt. Wähle beispielsweise für ein Bild des Brandenburger Tors als Kategorie nicht „Architecture“, sondern „Brandenburg Gate“. Ja, super!

Ich helfe gerne an der weiteren Verbesserung hier, aber den Bürokratismus, den trage ich nicht mit, ich bin auch der Wiki nicht restlos verknechtet und arbeite an keiner persönlichen Statistik etc..

Schöner Tag heute, die Natur und meine Hobbys rufen und gehen vor!

An alle Wikimedianer, hier dürft Ihr Euch austoben

Ihr dürft Euch bei mir voll austoben, Ihr dürft umbenennen, Fehler suchen, in die kompliziertesten, unaussprechlichsten, unbekanntesten Kategorien verschieben (wer da noch durchsieht), ist selbst dran schuld, ich genieße mein Leben und trage gerne zu Eurer "Arbeit" bei. Die entsprechenden Nachrichten an mich lösche ich umgehend, sie interessieren mich nur am Rande.

Niemand macht das hier uneigennützig oder wird gezwungen, sie bekommen eine bessere Statistik oder steigen in der Hierarchie auf, aber alle sind freiwillig bei Wikimedia und viele Nutzer stürzen sich gerne auf jede neue Datei, siehe oben.
