overcategorization, some hints

[edit]
moved from File talk:Kerala RTC.jpg:

Hi User:Prof tpms, no offense, but remarked not for the fist time, that you additionally added empty or miss-leading categories, although your upload(s) already have been categorized; more than a handful has been fixed (two undone, misleading categories speedydelete requested) during my 13/14 Dec-'session'. btw: for new categories, so you're in doubt, imho it's the best way to use category names according to EN-WP, especially yourself started those ;-) Kindly regards, Roland zh (talk) 00:39, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

as there where further 'over-categorization's, some more have been reverted, no offense, again, but in general, please avoid (massively) over-categorizing, Roland zh (talk) 01:57, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
[moved from my user talk as started here]
Dear Roland, I will take more care in future about over categorization. Regards Prof̠tpms — Preceding unsigned comment added by Prof tpms (talk • contribs) 02:40, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Prof tpms, thank you for taking notice. i'm happy to read, and no problem from my side. Kindly regards, Roland zh (talk) 04:02, 14 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, again, ref Category:Kozhikode East, once more 'over-categorisation', see for instance Category:Indian Institute of Management Kozhikode. No offense, and Happy New Year, Roland zh (talk) 19:59, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Roland zh, New categories are needed to combine insignificant suburbs and villages to logical units like 'Kannur East' and 'Taliparamba West'. Regards, Prof. Manna (talk) 22:46, 29 December 2015 (UTC)Category:Indian Institute of Management Kozhikodeis only a single campus in the Category:Kozhikode East area. Prof. Manna (talk) 22:48, 29 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, again, new categories are not the problem, for instance over-categorization may mean to add, both Category:Kasaragod and Category:Malik Deenar Juma Masjid (again as of today) to individual files, as well as files that already are part of, for instance, to add the categories of Taliparamba and Taliparamba East, or Kannur, Kappad (individual files of beach, memorial and so on) etc.etc.etc. Please check Commons:Categories, where imho the 'core problem' may be explained much better than i'm able to do, kr Roland zh (talk) 16:53, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, I will minimize adding to bigger categories. Smaller categories need more files and they are more searchable. Prof. Manna (talk) 16:56, 30 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
and, again, p.e. Category:South Malabar (no p.e. EN-wiki, but Category:Malabar Coast) etc, please no single files (same problem as before), instead categorized just by the related districts, bye, Roland zh (talk) 19:47, 3 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Roland zh, I have understood and accepted you advice that a category should contain more than one pictures. But when I make a new category, I begin with one picture and take a few more seconds to come to the next picture and add it to the same picture. In fact I don't know the other way around: How to create a caategory first and add pictures to it. In that way you end up with empty catgeories and again the same problem. Regards,Prof. Manna (talk) 00:13, 4 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Prof. Manna, no offense, but you may misunderstood because of my bad English: the 'core' problem is to categorize each/one image by the related category (a village, for instance), and also to add the 'higher-level-category' (the related district, for instance) in the so-called category tree, or an (obviously) misleading category, another village or city or region (South Malabar), for instance. Please see also Commons:Categories. Kindly regards and happy uploading, Roland zh (talk) 20:49, 4 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Roland zh, I have tried your patience too much. In fact, the Category Tree can be a little confusing when you look at it ambiguously. I will read the help article Commons:Categories thoroughly because I am not in a position to give up categorization altogether. I am very much interested in categories and the kind of work I do needs them badly. But I want to avoid giving trouble to you. With love,
File:V.Lead Library.jpg has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Renaming

[edit]

I looked up your rename requests. New names are very poor. IMHO, it would be better to combine the old name with new suffix. Fore example: "Indian vegetable shop in Gudalur, Nilgiris". If you agree fix new names please. --sasha (krassotkin) 07:44, 10 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Dear (krassotkin), thank you for your kind letter. I agree with you that longer titles are better. Only because there are too many to rename, I went for the shorter ones. Regards, --Prof TPMS (talk) 08:32, 10 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Help

[edit]

Can you please fix this? --Orijentolog (talk) 11:45, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

No sir, I don't know how to delete. Prof TPMS (talk) 11:48, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
No, Orijentolog, I don't know how to delete. Prof TPMS (talk) 11:50, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Problem is this: I nominated the file, but it doesn't list it well (like files nominated by you and others). I don't know why. So I meant can you use the same process for that file and put given reason? --Orijentolog (talk) 11:52, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
User:Roland zh will help, please. Prof TPMS (talk) 11:55, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
no, he can not, and please avoid to give such recommondations, thx and bye, Roland zh (talk) 19:56, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
I asked User:Taivo (admin). Thanks anyway! --Orijentolog (talk) 12:03, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Unacceptable Deletion requests and relocations of Categories

[edit]

Dear Prof TPMS, it seems you are on vibrant activity within the Wikimedia Commons. Thank you! But to me, most your deletion requests and rearrangement of categories are reckless and lacks sufficient judgement. I would suggest you to refrain from such until enough understanding is acquired on these actions. You are welcome to contact me directly and discuss these by email or phone. With regards, ViswaPrabha (വിശ്വപ്രഭ) (talk) 16:31, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, again, and in short: I completely agree with ViswaPrabha (വിശ്വപ്രഭ)'s judicious request. Please stop these renamings, for instance ml:പയ്യാമ്പലം കടപ്പുറം imho does not mean "Kannur Beach", but Category:Payyambalam Beach, as it was before. From my side, the Malayalam Wikipedia wikis imho are 'the' reference to name Kerala-related categories (so I practiced the past seven years), hence, i'll re-establish that category and probably some others, by spending/loosing again time that i'd preferred to spend for more constructive enhancements in the Wikimedia projects...
btw: as from my side very frustrating, I allow to point once again to the section overcategorization, some hints, hence, i'll ignore your recent request on my talk (Kannur East!??!? instead of related college, definitely, no!), as it's again relating the core problem: removing appropriate categories. Please finally try to get familiar with the Categorization model used within Wikimedia Commons, as linked before. Thank you for taking notice, finally regards, Roland zh (talk) 19:53, 19 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Dear Roland zh, I feel bad in frustrating you and taking your time. Categories are complicated affairs and I understand that it can get messy dealing with them. But I have moved only with caution and in good intention. I have to take a little more caution in future. Thank you for the observations on keeping pictures of lower quality. Please note that I have not deleted pictures but only recommended pictures of very low quality for deletion. Prof TPMS (talk) 01:52, 20 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for understanding the situation. I would like to let you know that low quality is not a valid reason for deletion every time. For example, if the image is in use or if there are no alternatives available, we will not be deleting those images. Our aim is to help our community and others by storing images and media that in in scope which could be of use anywhere. You may feel certain images are useless, but we never know if others might find it useful. Next time, I will recommend using the templates {{Low quality}} or {{Out of scope}} instead of nominating them for deletion. --Sreejith K (talk) 23:24, 21 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, Sreejith K, I understand the concerns very well and will keep away from deletions in future. Templates {{Low quality}} or {{Out of scope}} suggested will be sufficient to air my views. --Prof TPMS (talk) 01:42, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]

May I submit my humble thanks to all of you in settling this so beautifully. Thank you all! - ViswaPrabha (വിശ്വപ്രഭ) (talk) 01:49, 22 February 2016 (UTC)[reply]
