Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.
[[Category:Category name]]
For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:
[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]
This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:02, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
Pronunciation file names
[edit]Please use language code prefix for pronunciation file names. See Category:French pronunciation for examples. --EugeneZelenko (talk) 15:03, 23 May 2018 (UTC)
Gaustaag
[edit]Is User:Gaustaag an account of yours? - Alexis Jazz ping plz 17:09, 16 July 2018 (UTC)
Yes, apparently my Wikipedia name, Gaustaag, isn't available on Wikimedia. So Gaustaag, Poolewan, both me. Poolewan (talk) 03:16, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
- What do you mean by "Wikimedia"? https://commons.wikimedia.org/, https://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/ or something else? You did edit here as Gaustaag so you don't need another account for that. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 23:25, 17 July 2018 (UTC)
I mean what this platform is: Wikimedia Commons. If I edited on Wikimedia Commons with the name Gaustaag, I did it inadvertently, because I didn't think I could. And I suppose that if I can, I don't need two accounts. However on Wikimedia Commons under Poolewan my user name is always blue, and if I come here with my Wikipedia user name, the name is in red letters, which may indicate some kind of "red flag". I hope that makes sense. Thanks.Poolewan (talk) 04:44, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
- Go to m:User:Gaustaag (or if you prefer a specific user page for Commons: User:Gaustaag), type "I DEMAND my user name shall be blue from now on!" (or any other mishmash that you'd like to appear on your user page) and click "Publish page". Your wish will be granted instantly. m:User:Gaustaag would be your global user page that shows on any project you didn't make a project-specific page for, so your user name will be blue on all Wikimedia projects. - Alexis Jazz ping plz 05:00, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
Thank you, very much Alexis Jazz, I will try that. (if not today, soon)Poolewan (talk) 14:47, 18 July 2018 (UTC)
