Blue sky

At first I thought it was kind of a silly category too, but I have since started using it myself, for images where the clear (as in, no clouds; those images go here) sky takes up a significant part of the image.

I know there's also this category which seems to have a lot of the same type of image, but I think that should be used for images where blue sky is visible through an object or lattice of objects in the foreground.

Colin: hahaha, yes, well, even to me it's a bit embarrassing. As only images of municipalities or monuments without a picture on Commons previously can participate in Spain that's a big handicap in terms of wow in comparison to other countries, but I fully agree on that approach. Btw, last year I managed to represent 6 countries in the final, let's see if I can top it this year, as I have submitted images to 7 (so far I succeded in 3 of 3 and awaiting Canada, USA, Poland and Russia). With the prize from WLM in Spain I'll finance a good portion of a new lens, so everybody will benefit from that :) Poco² 10:32, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

So the subject can't be on Commons already? Wow that's a big handicap and I think would make it very hard for the UK where we have lots of crappy Geograph photos of many subjects. I'd support a rule where the winning images have to be better than we have of their subject on Commons already. We have a few winning images I could mention that are deeply unoriginal and very much below the bar wrt existing images. I question what is the point then, if the winners are significantly worse than Commons already has, or repeats of previous years. -- Colin (talk) 10:39, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

Right, actually this approach was already rolled out last year. We have lists of all monuments and clean them up with those that already have a monument for the contest along with the missing municipalities (e.g. current full list and WLM version of it). It isn't that much work if the lists are available. I actually believe that this would be the right focus for the whole WLM. What is actually the ultimate aim of WLM, providing most pictures (just the number matters) or documenting the monumental heritage? I guess, and hope, the latter, and as we have already documented a lot of monuments, shouldn't we focus on document those that are still missing?. The besto of all, this approach is working and people are motivated to hunt those last monuments and municipalities we have no pictures of. To give one example, the first year I participated in WLM, I took a bunch of photos of St Matthew's Church, Paisley. We already had this Geograph photo of it. I took over 30 high quality photos of the outside and inside, including this FP. It's one of the more important Art Nouveau buildings in Scotland. A competition that denied entries for that building, just because we had that awful Geograph photo, would not be helping Commons I think. Also, for some buildings, it is the interior that makes them special and achieves "listed" status, so if we simply have a weak street photo of the outside, then that's not really documenting the cultural heritage.

One could argue, Poco, that your dominance in the top 10 suggests the Spanish contest did not earn enough competition from serious photographers, who perhaps were put off by the strict criteria? [Of course, it could be because took brilliant photos :-)] I agree that "documenting the monumental heritage" is an important aim, but surely a photo competition seeks to attract high-quality photos, rather than merely photos that tick a box, and so "improving our collection with better and new images of the monumental heritage" is I think a better target. Which is why I am regularly disappointed that many winning images are unoriginal and weaker than many of the images Commons already has of their subjects.

There is also the consideration that some aspects of improving Commons (or Wikipedia) are better handled by other forums than a yearly photo competition. The gaps in our database could be filled by regular "photo challenge" style contests? (Note: I started Photo Challenge to encourage/challenge photographers to take photos of subject types and/or photo styles they had not tried before, not as an exercise in expanding our portfolio of images). Commons is actually quite strong with photos of notable buildings, and weak in many other photographic areas. Perhaps a "filling the gaps" mission is better served by QI level judging, where "wow" is not a factor. I think a huge photo competition warrants spectacular winners, otherwise it then becomes difficult to publicise and attract people next year. So Spain having a "handicap in terms of wow" is maybe a problem. -- Colin (talk) 12:54, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

• Colin, I wouldn't even have thought about restricting the contest to pictures of missing monuments a few years ago. Your argument about St Matthew's church in Pasley was very valid back then, but, please, consider this topic also from the perspective of 6 years experience in WLM and therefore 6 years of possibilites to have uploaded better material than the existng one. Did you go back to that church after 2013?
• You got a point regarding the interior and exterior, but that's not a big deal as you still have the possibility, if required, to adjust the listings with those subjects you feel are still required (e.g. interior of a church for which there are only photos of the exterior). The rule I talk about doesn't have to be black or white.
• Regarding the presence of my images among the finalists, I'm not sure about the reasons for that. This year there have been about 200 uploaders in Spain, btw. many of whom have uploaded images of monuments already available and not listed in the official WLM listing. So, that's something to count with: many people will keep uploading inside and outside WLM monuments that were not missing.
• Regarding quality, well, I don't think that Spain's approach influences the quality of the images and if it does, then in a positive way, as people who drive for hours (I drove about 800-1000 km/day of secondary roads for 4-5 days to achieve 50 monuments and 120 municipalities) to hunt missing monuments will probably be equipped with an acceptable camera. On the other side, if pictures of the Sagrada Familia where accepted you can expect lots of tourist shots with a cell phone (which, as said, we still get...).
• Sure, we need to invest much more time in the lists in Wikipedia which is actually the activity I dedicate more time after my work (and over photography), just check my edits on Commons or on the Spanish Wikipedia. For some regions I am mostly done documenting all monuments and adding the coordinates to find them.
• Regarding the importance of having spectacular winners to attract people next year, my take is completely different. I rather believe that 1) we are losing participants because the contest remains the same year and year and all monuments a person can think of nearby have already been photographed by him/her. 2) assuming that great images will attract new people is wrong, as it also disapppoints many others that consider that they cannot be at that level. Please, don't underestimate the power of a list of missing monuments in Wikipedia. That's a clear target (what is the current target of WLM?) and it offers those people that are not motivated anymoer a new kind of photography, hunting monuments they never heard of instead of taking pictures of those they know of. I've done it and it is really fun and as said, the list of missing monuments is getting considerable shorter! Poco² 16:57, 31 October 2017 (UTC)

Just my little comment (I hope I don't interrupt your thoughts): The last point of Pocos list describes nearly exactly my personal point of view. I'd like to see the focus of WLM shifting to your so called "missing monuments". In my local environment (Hamburg, Germany), I can "prove" that there was a concentration of WLM-winning images around one very special area of the city. See my list here. Dirtsc Germany is one of the most active nations on Commons and at WLM (see stats). You had over 20,000 images from 447 users -- though again the top 8 users contribute half the images, and the top 1 user contributed a quarter of the images! When you look at the images for Ireland it is rather pathetic in comparison. I wonder if we should rethink how the competition is judged at a national level. But I'm concerned that a restriction to only "missing images" would make this a contest only for wiki enthusiasts, and a contest only wiki enthusiasts (like Poco) will win. -- Colin (talk) 08:57, 2 November 2017 (UTC)

Well, Colin, I agree so far that a person who has not been involved in the movement so far will hardly drive 1000 km a day in 15 hours to hunt from monuments in different regions of the country where he lives (as I do), on the other side I think that it is a matter of good promotion and marketing. People have usually bonds to the places they coem from and breaking down those lists into regional list will probably motivate people. As said, we've experience from 2 editions now and we still attract new people. I remember one who wrote in Twitter that we was driving 50 km one way by bike to take a picture of a remote building we have no picture of. Hola The Photographer, sí, claro, hice un bracketing, pero en todas las imágenes aparecen vehículos (y me temo que la cosa no hubiera cambiado en horas...) por lo que hay áreas de la imagen en las que no tengo el fondo sin objectos. No trabajo con Fotomatrix pero sí con Photoshop y el método que conozco, y funciona bastante bien, es éste, además es totalmente automático. Gracias por la sugerencia y un saludo para allá!
