Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 12:52, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

Austrian nobility
[edit]I think it would be better to discuss first, before you change in masses! Zuerst so0 einen großen Eingriff diskutieren, dann kann man ja sehen! So geht's m. E. überhaupt nicht!-- Sacha47 (talk) 10:40, 02 august 2017 (CEST)
- Sure we can discuss this first. I found that there were so many subcategories in "Nobility of Austria" that it simply became difficult to navigate. In particular, I noticed that (1) "whole families" and "individual nobles" were in the same category; (2) some noble families were listed in "Nobility of Austria" but not in "Families of Austria" (and vice versa); (3) many files of coats of arms of noble families were listed in "Coats of arms of families of Austria" but not in "Coats of arms of Austrian nobility" (and vice versa). So I thought about it for a long time and found that perhaps grouping the families, and their arms, in alphabetical order would be a significant improvement. PicturePrince (talk) 08:51, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
- Why not. But first complete your new category. Until then keep the old category, please.--(talk) 11:35, 02 august 2017 (CEST)
- Thank you for your reply. I'm nor sure though I understand - do you mean I should add the families to the new category first, and once complete, remove the old category? PicturePrince (talk) 09:38, 2 August 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, or leave them both in there.-- Sacha47 (talk) 11:43, 02 august 2017 (CEST)
- Thanks for explaining. Best wishes, PicturePrince (talk) 09:43, 2 August 2017 (UTC)

Freidhof
[edit]Hi Picture Prince. While you request file name changes for the Wiener Zentralfriedhof, could you please consider changing it to Zentralfriedhof instead of Zentralfreidhof als well? Thank you, --Gereon K. (talk) 20:02, 6 October 2017 (UTC)
Grave sculptures of humans at Zentralfriedhof, Vienna has been listed at Commons:Categories for discussion so that the community can discuss ways in which it should be changed. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry. If you created this category, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for discussion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it. If the category is up for deletion because it has been superseded, consider the notion that although the category may be deleted, your hard work (which we all greatly appreciate) lives on in the new category. In all cases, please do not take the category discussion personally. It is never intended as such. Thank you! |

Category:Noble families of Austria by name
[edit]Hallo there,
You have done some work on this Category:Noble families of Austria by name, however I am not sure what the exact purpose of it since a search has become quite cumbersome. Can we get rid of this category? Or at least double-list the families under the overarching category of noble families? Otherwise the search becomes too difficult. Thank you. Gryffindor (talk) 23:12, 5 November 2017 (UTC)
- Yes, please do get rid of the category if you like. I'm semi-retired from Wikimedia Commons for private reasons, so am only able to contribute to a very limited extent. Best wishes PicturePrince (talk) 19:29, 7 November 2017 (UTC)
Umbenennen von Dateien
[edit]Hallo Picture Prince!

- Alles klar, passt so lg, --Thomas Ledl (talk) 09:08, 14 November 2017 (UTC)

[edit]Copyright status: File:Schlüsselzettel (serial number A297185) from 1940.tif
This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Schlüsselzettel (serial number A297185) from 1940.tif. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

How to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category
[edit]When you want to ask for speedy-delete of an empty category, best practice is to mark it with C2 if it would be OK to re-create it in the future, given that appropriate content becomes available or C1 if it is an inappropriate category name that should not be reused. In particular, this is better practice than just blanking the category page, as you did at Category:Geodesy in Bosnia-Hercegovina. ("C1" and "C2" come from Commons:Criteria for speedy deletion).
