Re: Question about process

There are no objections, the request has been open for months, and it would be consistent with en:wiki styling, so I say go right ahead. --Tom (talk - email) 16:25, 21 April 2011 (UTC)

No proof

You nominated File:Bulldog I.S.72.jpg for deletion but, you didn't give a reason as to how it is a copyright violation.Greg Heffley 20:28, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

That was implied by the URL I listed - it's an image from a website that doesn't release the image under a free license. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 22:43, 18 November 2011 (UTC)
Ah, now I see what you were getting at. I've replied at File talk:Bulldog I.S.72.jpg. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 22:51, 18 November 2011 (UTC)

I reversed my nomination but this stayed empty. Is that ok and if not can you delete it? Thanks.--Officer (talk) 01:55, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

I'm not an admin, so I can't delete it, but I nominated it for speedy deletion for you. In the future you can do that with {{Speedydelete}}. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 05:59, 22 November 2011 (UTC)
Ok, thanks.--Officer (talk) 12:59, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

My edit summary was correct - your edit was nonconstructive and inappropriate. Belittling other editors' contributions is not helpful - and that edit does indicate that belittling others was your intention at Commons:Worst images. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 21:22, 3 June 2012 (UTC)
Rather than edit-war over this, I've asked that the folks at the Village Pump weigh in here. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 21:31, 3 June 2012 (UTC)

Welcome, Dear Filemover!

Hi Philosopher/Archive 1, you're now a filemover. When moving files please respect the following advice:

  • Use the CommonsDelinker link in the {{Rename}} template to order a bot to replace all ocurrences of the old title with the new one.
  • Please do not tag redirects as {{Speedy}}. Other projects, like InstantCommons, might be using the file even though they don't show up in the global usage. Deleting the redirects would break their file references.
  • Please know and follow the file rename guidelines.

Reapportionment Map

The fives on your map, File:2010 census reapportionment.jpg, look like sixes. Other readers have complained about this. I managed to fix this problem (when the map is viewed at full resolution) by opening up the fives, but when the map is shrunk to 600px for presentation in the article the fives still look like sixes. I think if the map were uploaded in .png instead of .jpg the problem might disappear. I don't know. I will not try to tinker with it further. HowardMorland (talk) 15:53, 27 June 2012 (UTC)

Have you taken a look at File:ElectoralCollege2012.svg? I should be able to modify that (-2 to each number) and use the new image where File:2010 census reapportionment.jpg is currently being used. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 02:12, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
I've created File:2010 census reapportionment.svg, which should work for your purposes. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 04:59, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
That's amazing! How did you do it so fast? It takes me forever to produce an .svg file. HowardMorland (talk) 12:54, 28 June 2012 (UTC)
I used Notepad++ to find the state's numbers in File:ElectoralCollege2012.svg and replace them. I don't create .svg files very often, so I don't know what the best tool to create them is, but Nodepad++ is a great tool for modifying them because it treats .svg files as text files, making it easy to find and replace information. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 07:58, 30 June 2012 (UTC)
So you found an .svg file that was already on Commons. HowardMorland (talk) 17:30, 15 July 2012 (UTC)
And modified it to create a new one, yes. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 20:27, 15 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for the explanations and the help during the POTY-contest

Thanks - while that's probably not an actual legal threat, I weighed in on the deletion discussion. I hope that'll do some good, at least. Philippe (WMF) (talk) 10:31, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

An offering for our new administrator from your comrades...

Philosopher, congratulations! You now have administrator rights on Commons. Please take a moment to read the Commons:Administrators page and watchlist related pages (in particular Commons:Administrators' noticeboard and Commons:Deletion requests), before launching yourself into page deletions, page protections, account blockings or modifications of protected pages. The majority of the actions of administrators can be reversed by the other admins, except for history merges which must thus be treated with particular care.

Please feel free to join us on IRC: #wikimedia-commons on irc.freenode.net. There is also a channel for Commons admins, which may be useful for more sensitive topics, or coordination among administrators:#wikimedia-commons-admin.

You may find Commons:Guide to adminship to be useful reading.

Please also check or add your entry to the List of administrators and the related lists by language and date it references.

Pictures

Hello Philosopher, the first time pictures are deleted because of false information that these are historic images. I tried again to upload them to but wiki script do not allow it. Images are from private album. What should I do? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Callak2 (talk • contribs) Please sign your posts by typing ~~~~ Thank you. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 18:40, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

The best thing to do is to go to Commons:Undeletion requests and ask that the deleted pictures be undeleted. This will start a community discussion as to whether the pictures can be used here. Sadly, we sometimes delete pictures that should not be deleted - so the Commons:Undeletion requests page was set up so that we can fix those problems. There are instructions at the top of that page, but if you need help figuring it out, I'd be glad to help you. Happy editing! --Philosopher Let us reason together. 18:47, 4 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Philosopher, hope you're well. I recently closed Commons:Undeletion_requests/Current_requests#Images_by_User:Bodiak, and was hoping that you could re-delete the files that were found to be inappropriate for Commons. Thanks, FASTILY (TALK) 08:40, 8 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for closing that - and for pinging me! That was archived pretty quickly. Anyway, they're ✓ Done. --Philosopher Let us reason together. 04:53, 9 October 2012 (UTC)

I was just made aware that I missed a certain footnote, which if my understanding is correct would make the work of all Polish authors who died before 1942 PD in US. I have asked for clarification; you may want to follow Commons:Undeletion_requests/Current_requests#File:Dziwne_.2A_and_related_improper_deletions_by_Krzysiu as if I am right, then we should undelete all work by Stachiewicz. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus Talk 19:11, 11 October 2012 (UTC)

A message waiting for you to attend at the COM:AN

Hello. There's a new topic at the Administrators' Noticeboard, here, putting its stress on some late phenomenae of permit abuse performed by special-tool holders. This discussion is basing on, and referring to, some of the more basic rules as we know them here on Wiki. Since sometimes Admins may not attend the Noticeboard for many days and thus some topics fail to be coped with or remain unresponded, I've considered it useful that you get this 'personal' message and thereof pass-by the thread I've linked to and make sure together that vandalizing our project's management infrastructure grinds to a halt. Best regardz, Orrlingtalk 22:03, 19 October 2012 (UTC)

Are you aware that a  Neutral is effectively an  Oppose? The required vote is 75% of all votes cast, including neutrals, so that a vote with eight  Support and four  Neutral will fail because eight out of twelve is only 66%. .     Jim . . . . Jameslwoodward (talk to me) 16:15, 2 December 2012 (UTC)

[Removing my initial reply.] – Philosopher Let us reason together. 06:19, 3 December 2012 (UTC)
On second thought, considering Commons talk:Administrators/Archive3#On counting neutrals in the final percentage tally., I don't think that your interpretation is correct. Further, while neutrals aren't mentioned at Commons:Administrators, they are explicitly not included in the percentages for discussions at Commons:Bureaucrats#Voting. – Philosopher Let us reason together. 06:19, 3 December 2012 (UTC)

I did see that mentioned at Commons:Deletion requests/File:Мемориальная доска Ф. Г. Яновскому.jpg. Ticket

Hi, please, can you tell me how you are working on this? I got the fist ticket. Willy Weazley 21:38, 13 January 2013 (UTC)

It came up at Commons:Village pump/Copyright#130 years old institutional hymn. Since it was a month and a half old, I didn't track down the original owner, though upon reading the response, maybe I should have, as I'm having some trouble understanding the response. Could you please take a look at the ticket and see if it answers the question at Commons:Village pump/Copyright#130 years old institutional hymn? – Philosopher Let us reason together. 01:42, 14 January 2013 (UTC)
As said the sender,

The author is unknown, and the song never had lyrics. There was a restoration work, and one of the band's original survivors resumed the melody (José Duarte Ribeiro), with the help of conductor Guilherme Ferreira Marau, carrying scores for the orchestra of firefighters. This composition was officially adopted, that is, without the lyrics in 1993.Willy Weazley 02:28, 16 January 2013 (UTC)

Picture of the Year voting round 1 open

Dear Wikimedians,

Wikimedia Commons is happy to announce that the 2012 Picture of the Year competition is now open. We're interested in your opinion as to which images qualify to be the Picture of the Year for 2012. Voting is open to established Wikimedia users who meet the following criteria:

  1. Users must have an account, at any Wikimedia project, which was registered before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC].
  2. This user account must have more than 75 edits on any single Wikimedia project before Tue, 01 Jan 2013 00:00:00 +0000 [UTC]. Please check your account eligibility at the POTY 2012 Contest Eligibility tool.
  3. Users must vote with an account meeting the above requirements either on Commons or another SUL-related Wikimedia project (for other Wikimedia projects, the account must be attached to the user's Commons account through SUL).

Hundreds of images that have been rated Featured Pictures by the international Wikimedia Commons community in the past year are all entered in this competition. From professional animal and plant shots to breathtaking panoramas and skylines, restorations of historically relevant images, images portraying the world's best architecture, maps, emblems, diagrams created with the most modern technology, and impressive human portraits, Commons features pictures of all flavors.

For your convenience, we have sorted the images into topic categories. Two rounds of voting will be held: In the first round, you can vote for as many images as you like. The first round category winners and the top ten overall will then make it to the final. In the final round, when a limited number of images are left, you must decide on the one image that you want to become the Picture of the Year.

To see the candidate images just go to the POTY 2012 page on Wikimedia Commons

Wikimedia Commons celebrates our featured images of 2012 with this contest. Your votes decide the Picture of the Year, so remember to vote in the first round by January 30, 2013.

Thanks,
the Wikimedia Commons Picture of the Year committee

De-adminship warning

This talk page in other languages:

Dear Philosopher/Archive 1. I am writing to inform you that you are in danger of losing your adminship on Commons because of inactivity.

If you want to keep your adminship, you need both to sign at Commons:Administrators/Inactivity section/Aug-Sep 2013 within 30 days of today's date, and also to make at least five further admin actions in the following six months. Anyone who does not do so will automatically lose administrator rights.

You can read the de-admin policy at Commons:Administrators/De-adminship.
