Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 13:12, 9 January 2012 (UTC)

Upload descriptions and names
[edit]Hi, thanks for your many uploads. However, the usefulness of the uploads would be rather greater if you provided detailed descriptions on the file description page, categorised them appropriately, and gave them descriptive names. You've categorised a lot of things in Category:Fire extinguishers, and many of them are, but for example, File:Bay268.JPG is not, and others can be put in more specific subcategories. In any case, more detail is needed for many of the images. Thanks. Rd232 (talk) 23:20, 4 July 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for uploading File:Bay332.jpg. This media is missing permission information. A source is given, but there is no proof that the author or copyright holder agreed to license the file under the given license. Please provide a link to an appropriate webpage with license information, or ask the author or copyright holder to send an email with copy of a written permission to VRT (permissions-commons@wikimedia.org). You may still be required to go through this procedure even if you are the author yourself; please see Commons:But it's my own work! for more details. After you emailed permission, you may replace the No permission since tag with on file description page. Alternatively, you may click on "Challenge speedy deletion" below the tag if you wish to provide an argument why evidence of permission is not necessary in this case.
Please see this page for more information on how to confirm permission, or if you would like to understand why we ask for permission when uploading work that is not your own, or work which has been previously published (regardless of whether it is your own). The file probably has been deleted. If you sent a permission, try to send it again after 14 days. Do not re-upload. When the VRT-member processes your mail, the file can be undeleted. Additionally you can request undeletion here, providing a link to the File-page on Commons where it was uploaded (:File:Bay332.jpg ) and the above demanded information in your request. |

- What images do you plan to upload? MorganKevinJ(talk) 02:09, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks for responding to my request for unblock. I will only be uploading about six images to support pages on Wikipedia. Thanks James.
- In order for me, to accurately asses whether or not your uploads will be appropriate for the commons, I need more specific information such as what articles you plan on using the images in and what is the subject of the images(logos, people, architecture)? MorganKevinJ(talk) 19:52, 3 September 2012 (UTC)
- Still requesting unblock after messaging the admins above. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Patwintab (talk • contribs) 07:46, December 9, 2012 (UTC)
- Comment In a little over 2 months, from May 2012 to July 2012, this user uploaded over 2000 copyvio images. No detailed answers have been given to Morgankevinj's questions above, and I see no reason to think this user wouldn't continue to upload copyvios, whether on purpose, or due to a lack of understanding of copyright. I think the indef block should stand. INeverCry 20:04, 9 December 2012 (UTC)
- I think this is extremely unfair, having made one mistake and not being given another chance to prove I understand the situation better now, I wont be uploading copyright images and I do now understand the issues regarding copyright. Thank You.--Patwintab (talk) 11:11, 10 December 2012 (UTC)
- Hi, sorry it has taken me a long time to respond, I am a support worker in adult dementia and so busy at the moment. One image I was going to add was a picture I took myself to add to wiki page St.Mary's Hospital, Burghill of the Italianate architecture File:St.Mary's Hospital Recreation Hall.jpg. I now understand the rules regarding image uses and would again kindly ask for an unblock. Thanks.--Patwintab (talk) 14:17, 12 December 2012 (UTC)
- Hi there, If you want to request unblock please add reason replacing reason on why you should be unblocked, or otherwise your request will be automatically declined. --cyrfaw (talk) 08:28, 16 December 2012 (UTC)
- Will accept an unblock with the following editing restrictions until a commons admin lifts them(whole or part):
- You may not use any alternate accounts
- You may upload a maximum of three images per week
- All images you upload must be your own work
- You must give a link to all online sites where you have previously published images you have uploaded
- You will not reupload any previously deleted images(Request undeletion instead)
MorganKevinJ(talk) 21:07, 3 February 2013 (UTC)
- Yes I accept these conditions. Thank you.
--Patwintab (talk) 22:20, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
- The editing restrictions have been recorded on Commons:Editing_restrictions MorganKevinJ(talk) 23:21, 4 February 2013 (UTC)
