Removing categories and duplicate images

[edit]

Hello, this User:Tdorante10 from WP:NYPT. Please stop removing categories from bus images, particularly the "Buses of MTA Regional Bus Operations" category. The categories help sort the files with similar images, and help people find these images and use them on Wikipedia and other places.

Also, please try not to upload duplicates of the same image, unless they are cropped in order to highlight a specific item in the picture. Tdorante10 (talk) 00:02, 19 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Olsen24 claims to want to delete the duplicates. ----DanTD (talk) 02:16, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

FYI

[edit]

Please take a look at these policies: Commons:File naming, COM:FR, COM:CAT. Thank you. --XXN, 20:36, 25 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Especially COM:CAT. You really need to add categories to these images. I don't understand why you're reverting them. ----DanTD (talk) 02:08, 27 February 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop removing categories

[edit]

Hello, and welcome to Wikimedia Commons! You might not have realized it, but with some of your recent edits, you removed categories from a page or added categories that seemed misplaced to a page. Wikimedia Commons relies on categories heavily to keep media organized. Therefore, please do not severely alter the categories of a page without explaining why in the edit summary (unless you are adding categories to a page that previously didn't have any). Thank you. epicgenius (talk) 14:53, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I was trying to declutter the Buses of MTA Regional Buses category. Alot of the media in there is displaced and i felt like it needed to be removed. I was also under the impression that I could remove categories as long as there was at least one category per image. Olsen24 (talk) 16:07, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're referring to COM:OVERCAT, which talks about over-categorization. You could remove a category if a more specific child category is also there. However, I don't think that's the case with Category:Buses of MTA Regional Bus Operations because that category doesn't have so many sub-categories. It would be OK to remove the category Buses of MTA Regional Bus Operations if the file is also in another subcategory, but you weren't doing that. For instance, after this edit of yours, it was no longer evident that the bus in question was part of the MTA RBO fleet.
Additionally, the image can be placed in as many categories in possible as long as the image can be reasonably understood to be part of each category. epicgenius (talk) 22:21, 30 April 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Most of the images i was de-catogarizing were of ones that didn't show the whole bus or a bus at all. For instance, some picture from the debut of Bus Time, the chaining of the tires or of depots or depot stickers. Those pictures don't belong in that catagory and should be moved to a more appropriate category. Olsen24 (talk) 00:35, 1 May 2017 (UTC)[reply]

While we're on the subject, the reason I removed Category:Buses of MTA Regional Bus Operations was because Category:MTA Regional Bus Operations 2016 livery is a sub-category of Category:Buses of MTA Regional Bus Operations. This was what made the aforementioned category redundant. I just thought you ought to know this. ----DanTD (talk) 02:11, 2 June 2017 (UTC)[reply]

File sizes

[edit]

Hi there. I didn't want to put this at Jcb's talk page as it is not directly related to your recent revert-war over image sizes. However, if you need a certain resolution in a Wikipedia article, you can code this by adding a size parameter, e. g.: [[File:MTA NYC Bus X28 bus on Broadway.jpg|200px]]. This will set the width displayed in the article to 200 pixels. For any use outside Wikimedia though, please rescale and keep the images on your own computer since we do not keep several sizes of one and the same picture, and we generally want the highest resolution available. Warning

[edit]

Do not overwrite files with lower resolution versions like you did here. Jcb (talk) 19:41, 1 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

removing this warning and repeating the behaviour leaded to a permanent block. If you want to be disruptive on purpose, you don't belong to Wikimedia Commons. Jcb (talk) 14:48, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jcb: I apologize if i have been disruptive. If possible, can you put an expiration date on the block Olsen24 (talk) 15:03, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

✓ Done - Jcb (talk) 15:05, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jcb: How come so long? The disruptive behavior will not continue. This account is also not a vandalism only account as you said in the block description. Also, please explain how the said behavior was disruptive? Olsen24 (talk) 15:09, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Overwriting files with a lower resolution is considered vandalism. You have been doing so many times and have been continuing to do so, although several people have reverted you (often more than once of the same file) and several people have told you not to do this. My warning above was the last step before blocking you over this. Instead of obeying the clear instruction, you removed the warning and continued the behaviour. It was not an accident, you did this on purpose. Jcb (talk) 15:27, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I understand, however could the block be shortened and i promise there will be no more vandalism from this account. I also want to know why my account was labeled vandalism only which isn't accurate. Olsen24 (talk) 19:03, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

First wait a few months. After that you may file an undelete request, so that an uninvolved admin can have an other look. Complaining about the selected block reason is usually not a good strategy if you want to be unblocked. Jcb (talk) 20:45, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
