Question on Inkscape mapping

[edit]

Hello, not sure if this is the correct way to do this but here goes. I saw your maps on the 2018 United States Senate election in Montana of the senate election by house and senate districts. I liked them, so I am trying to figure out how you made these maps. I have Inkscape and have downloaded the data from redistricting data hub, just don't know where to start. Thanks! So to make those maps specifically I used a combination of Dave's Redistricting (https://davesredistricting.org/maps#home), inkscape, and an online converter. First what I did was I imported the shapefile retrieved from RDH into DRA. After that I opened up the maps and went to the export menu and exported it as GEOJSON. Afterwards I went to this link https://products.aspose.app/gis/viewer/geojson-to-svg and converted that geojson to an SVG file type which can be opened by Inkscape. At first the SVG will appear stretched (for reasons I don't know) so to fix this you have to manually fix it by adjusting the width so it looks like the state in question, which for this would be Montana. After this I changed the stroke to white and consulted the map in DRA (which has labels for how each district voted in the 2018 senate election) to know what to color what. Depending on how many districts there are in the map coloring can be a very slow and meticulous process, but in the end you will end up with what I got. It's hard to explain how to use inkscape in a comment like this, but there are many great tutorials online which will lead you in the right direction. It looks overly complicated at first, but once you get the hang of it becomes a walk in the park. Hope this helped! Ohaiyoan124 (talk) 00:48, 8 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ohio map

[edit]

Hey would you mind rotating the 2018 senate Ohio township map where it would align with the Ohio county map? It looks better on the article with the map switcher Putitonamap98 (talk) 02:56, 12 February 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Congressional maps

[edit]

hey @Ohaiyoan124 hope all is well with you. Just wondering if you could rework the illinois and Wisconsin Congress maps so they will perfectly align with the new v2 shapes? The dimensons are 810x810px https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2018_Illinois_gubernatorial_election_results_map_by_Congressional_District.svg https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2022_US_Senate_election_in_Wisconsin_by_congressional_district.svg

It's been a while since I've touched making election maps but I will try my best, which one of these correspond with the v2 shapes? Ohaiyoan124 (talk) 08:52, 24 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I already ask someone but he couldn't make them directly align

thanks i really appreciate it i have started using your shapefiles to update the other ones. the Georgia map looks better but the western part is still alittle off and the shore line part of the state looks funny/less detailed than the county map other than that it's almost perfect. Could you fix that please? Putitonamap98 (talk) 16:08, 15 August 2023 (UTC)[reply]

congressional map

[edit]

hey could you fix the new pennsylvania congressional map so it actually looks like pennsylvania? https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2022_Pennsylvania_Governor_election_by_Congressional_District.svg if you can please get it to align to match the county map that would be great: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:2022_Pennsylvania_gubernatorial_election_results_map_by_county.svg remember the dimensions are 810 x 471 Putitonamap98 (talk) 20:41, 16 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I will get to it when I can, as well as the other ones you requested Ohaiyoan124 (talk) 01:31, 18 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
redid shape Ohaiyoan124 (talk) 21:55, 23 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hey thanks i saw it and updated the other 2022 Pennsylvania maps using your base map, i was able to get some of the other state maps to align exactly with the county maps and i removed the ones on your talk page that i got. The other ones are almost impossible for me using the program i use i rotated and copy the size and pasted them on the congressional maps and they still didn't align good. So they'll likely need to be completely redone. Putitonamap98 (talk) 14:32, 25 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
