Statant Guardant
[edit]Hey heraldry teacher! Is this a lion statant guardant? --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 12:53, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
@The Eloquent Peasant: Hello! Yes. That would be a lion statant guardant proper. Lion specifies the animal, statant implies it is standing, all four feet on the ground, usually with the forepaws together, and guardant specifies that it's head is turned to full face. - Just checking if you've seen this book on archives; something for a heraldry teacher.
- But I'm confused about the fact that the lion looks like it's crouching down in fear (aka: like a coward) with its back up and its tail between its legs... How does that fit into heraldry? ('cause I'm just an old teacher and a good teacher and good teachers know that they don't know everything.) --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 14:23, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
- I mean, don't get me wrong, it's cute as hell but I just want to understand it from a heraldic point of view. In P.R. when the arms were created in '75 - '76, the people didn't know much and did make many mistakes in the descriptions etc. I don't suppose we can go back and correct their mistakes? Also how does heraldry apply to a colony? Which PR still is. Many things... but I'm here to learn as our readers are as well. Thank you for your work in the project. --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 14:30, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
- I have a private 2-hour lesson now with my student from Jerusalem but I look forward to speaking more with you, in the future! Take care! --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 14:37, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
- I have to get ready, but I keep coming back- I'm like that. But what about arms for like the House of (you know all those drag queen shows)... I AM HONESTLY curious about that. I don't think they have developed any yet. I've butterflies in my stomach a little. My class in 20 minutes is not for talking politics but how will I give a 2-hour class and not bring up the elephant in the room. We'll see how it goes. Gotta go, seriously, this time. Gotta get ready. Preparation is important when you're a teacher. Take care, again! --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 14:39, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
- I'm done with my class. So anyway, back to the Puerto Rico symbols. When the director of the Instituto de Cultura Puertorriqueña decided to request all Puerto Rico municipalities design their coat of arms and flags, the mayors and artists were not experts in heraldry but they understood that the symbols should reflect their municipalities or cities. (Puerto Rico municipios are also a city or a town, depending on its size). They put together things and filed them and so the rest is history as they say. In the case of Ponce, Puerto Rico - I believe it already had its coat of arms before the 70s, which is a symbol of a lion but I don't think it's the symbol of a cowardly lion - you know, like in the Wizard of Oz. Such a great movie. I've seen it many times. I believe the lion they chose should be something like what is seen around the internet, not like this particular lion seen here, that I have asked about. Thank you. --The Eloquent Peasant (talk) 17:31, 13 May 2021 (UTC)
