First steps tutorial

Our first steps help file and our FAQ will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy. You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold contributing here and assume good faith for the intentions of others. This is a wiki ‒ it is really easy.

Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}
  • For more information read the full Deletion guidelines
(P.S. Would you like to provide feedback on this message?)

Human welcome

[edit]

Hi Nerva, and welcome to the wikimedia commons from me as well (I'm not a robot ;). Those were some very nice images you uploaded - I've added Category:Art of Estonia to them, there probably should be some more categories to help others find those images but I really don't know enough about it to identify metods, genre etc. If you want to want to try fixing that yourself you may find some helpful links in Please link images.

The reason why there is a robot adding that welcome-template is that there are simply to many new users here at Commons for us to be able to welcome everybody personally. Also, commons is rather different from other wikimediaprojects, so we believe it's important to give everybody the helpful llinks of the welcometemplate (even if it has to be done by a robot). Regards, Finn Rindahl 15:28, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Finn, Thanks a lot for your advice. I'll certainly try to categorize the pictures. Creating Category:Art of Estonia seems to be a good idea — thanks.
About the robot, you know, we get too much spam every day, and I'm sorry I guess I may have overreacted a bit, because it looked exactly like one of those. I know this has nothing to do with spam, and I know there are real people behind the bot, doing hard work. Generally, getting a hello when you've just stepped in is something very kind, absolutely. However I think when there is a robot doing this, it is kind of cool too, but I think the bot could just make it short and stay cool and kind (without shaking your hand and talking for 5 minutes without a break). So, I think one single link would be enough to add to this kind of welcome message, sort of If you want me to help you getting started, just click me or something. All those useful links would come up on the page I would open by clicking on this link. It wouldn't feel unsoliced anymore. I hope you understand what I mean. And, thank you very much for your respond on my message I left to the feedback page. :)--Nerva 18:13, 31 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Nerva,
do you really own the full copyright of File:Paabel CD Epopoa Front Cover.jpg? CD/DVD covers are usually copyrighted and a photo of such a cover is thereby a derivative (not allowed). In case you contributed to the design etc. of the cover, you should check whether the rights weren't transfered to the record company. --Túrelio (talk) 14:07, 9 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikimedia Commons does not accept derivative works of non-free works such as File:Paabel CD Epopoa Front Cover.jpg. It only accepts free content, which is images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Reproductions of copyrighted works are also subject to the same copyright, and therefore this file must unfortunately be considered non-free. For more information, please read Commons:Derivative works and Commons:Freedom of panorama. You can ask questions about Commons policies in Commons:Help desk. The file you added has been deleted. If you believe that this file was not a derivative work of a non-free work, you may request undeletion.
