Our first steps tour and our frequently asked questions will help you a lot after registration. They explain how to customize the interface (for example the language), how to upload files and our basic licensing policy (Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content). You don't need technical skills in order to contribute here. Be bold when contributing and assume good faith when interacting with others. This is a wiki. More information is available at the community portal. You may ask questions at the help desk, village pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (webchat). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at the copyright village pump. |

Categories in Wikimedia
[edit]Categories in Wikimedia Commons are very different from the "tag" system in , for instance, Flickr. Please read COM:CAT for more information on how to categorise your uploads in Wikimedia Commons. You should normally place your upload in the most specific existing category possible that you can find in the category system. That way, your upload is easier to find for people who are looking for a specific image. In other words, you should place a file into Category:Rivers of Florida instead of Category:Rivers. Please also read COM:OVERCAT to prevent one of the most common mistakes people make when they categorise files in Wikimedia Commons. If no GPS coordinates are included, please also give an indication of where the image was taken in the description of the image. Thank you. - Takeaway (talk) 11:31, 28 November 2015 (UTC)
