Getting help

More information is available at the Community Portal. You may ask questions at the Help desk, Village Pump or on IRC channel #wikimedia-commons (direct access). You can also contact an administrator on their talk page. If you have a specific copyright question, ask at Commons talk:Licensing.

Goodies, tips and tricks
  • Put Babel boxes on your user page so others know what languages you can speak and indicate your Graphics abilities.
  • All your uploads are stored in your personal Gallery
  • Please sign your name on Talk pages by typing ~~~~
  • Use the CommonSense tool to find good categories for your files (then other people can find them too!)
  • To link to an image page without embedding the image, type: [[:Image:Foo.jpg]], which produces: Image:Foo.jpg
  • If you're copying files from another project, be sure to use the CommonsHelper
Made a mistake?
  • Did you want to rename or move a file? Simply upload the file again and mark the old one like this: {{bad name|Correct name}}

Please review our project scope, but in short, Commons is targeted at media files including photographs, diagrams, animations, music, spoken text and video clips. Wikimedia Commons does not contain text articles like encyclopedia articles, textbooks, news, word definitions and such. If the content seems to fit the scope of one of those other projects, please consider contributing it there. If you think that the deletion was in error because the contribution really was in scope, you can appeal it at Commons:Undeletion requests, giving a reason why it fits our scope to help others evaluate the matter. Hi! This is about your edits of this picture. I know next to nothing about Ancient Egypt, but I took the data straight from the museum label (on line). It dates the relief to the 4th century BC; the artwork is exhibited in a room dedicated to Egyptian works "from the last Egyptian Pharaohs to Cleopatra, 404–40 BC". Are you sure of your dates? Perhaps the best course would be to mention both. See for instance Image:Nubian playing CdM 1009.jpg: the museum claims the statuette is a 16th-century AD imitation of an ancient work; J. Boardman states it's a 2nd century BC work. Jastrow (Λέγετε) 11:52, 17 November 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What exactly is "Northern Arizona", how is the border defined and why is such a category useful? --h-stt !? 08:36, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Cronología

[edit]

Hola Mmcannis. Después de pensarlo mucho, he decidido solicitar que se borren las categorías de los años tipo: 8500 BC, 8300 BC, 8000 BC, 7500 BC, etc. (ver Category:Other speedy deletions).

(Hello Mmcannis. After much consideration, I decided to ask to be erased type categories of years: 8500 BC, 8300 BC, 8000 BC, 7500 BC, and so on. (see Category: Other speedy deletions). Are not correct in an encyclopedia. There are already those of decades, centuries and millennia, more suited to the images of those times (hardly datable). What do you think? Sincerely, JMCC1)

8500 BC, and other century categorie

[edit]

{Posted also on your talk page)
What you decide about the categories is "fine by me." Let me explain: when I was making all the hieroglyph categories, Category:Hieroglyphs of Egypt, i branched into: Category:Hieroglyphs on media, (and even more, of Egypt-related), then also Category:Cuneiform on media. Somebody just made the en:Gudea cylinders article (cat: Cuneiform on cylinders)... so eventually the cats find a purpose.

I also found that the Century cats:.. Category:11th century BC and all going back to 29th century BC, were UNMADE, or undeveloped. I used Ancient Egypt, and Mesopotamia, (starting with Pottery) to start the cats with the Photos.

Only one confirmed date of 2627 BC came up for en:Peru, S. America where the mud pyramids were dated by the cloth used to carry mud. Another century was confirmed in 5500BC by the explosion of en:Mount Mazama, (Crater Lake, Oregon, USA). many items can only be identified to millenniums, or a couple of centuries. You know the problems. (en:Dendrochronology is wonderful!)..The old pottery-(I used) for the (centuries mentioned), are change-able guesses, (I think).
My Reply:
Cheers, enjoy OUR human discoveries. Michael (in HOT, SonoranDesert, ArizonaUSA)....Mmcannis (talk) 14:31, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Meteor (hieroglyph)

[edit]

Hi Mmcannis. See Category talk:Meteor (hieroglyph). Can you add references? Thanks, --JMCC1 (talk) 22:35, 10 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

When I found the first photo, (for Irtysen), his Stele of Irtysen, his name was not on the photo File. I eventually found the temple that had the same style of hieroglyphs; (I don't remember the name of the temple, or the en:timeperiod for it either, but I think (I entered it), the photo in the Location Category where the tomb is.)....
The 2nd photo (with the hieroglyph) is a "gravestone", end-of-life stele about the (different)-Scribe-(probable author of the gravestone-stele?), and God en:Sobek, and also has the staircase hieroglyph, in the story. (I'm not addressing the question you posed. You, and I, both know what the Incense hieroglyphs are all about, (as well as the Ba-bird)....
(I just Googled "Stele of Irtysen"..so there is easy info on him (Called a "Master Craftsmen"-(obvious from the execution of his Masterfull stele)...Mmcannis (talk) 13:56, 22 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mmcannis, thank you for your efforts to fix and extend the descriptions of photographs from the Grand Canyon. In this case, however, the file was wrongly described to be from Moran Point. You fixed that to Shoshone Point where I have never been. I've corrected that now to Yaki Point. Please check the remaining description. I've no detailed map of that area and cannot check if this is all still correct when it is considered that this photo has been taken from Yoki Point. Thanks!

Grand Canyon image description changed

[edit]

Hi, on image File:Grand Canyon 2011 By helicopter.JPG, i changed your description and added a lot of annotations. The old description is now on the discussion page. I also added a lot of the annotations to other Grand Canyon Images (I hope that's a nice spin-off for everybody from tagging my images at home :). Greetings, -- Schusch (talk) 03:39, 2 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

hi again ... just to clarify: i'm not the author of this image or any other of the Grand Canyon images. So no laurels for me for taking pictures there--only for some annotations ;-) -- Schusch (talk) 21:01, 8 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
