Question about submitting files for deletion

Greetings, I am fairly new to Commons and I was wondering if there was a tool or something used here (like Twinkle in ENWP) that makes it easier to submit images for deletion. I have found several including File:Playing Cards with Friends.jpg and File:Selfie Time.jpg that were recently submitted that probably fit the File for deletion requirements. Reguyla (talk) 20:26, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

I just use the Nominate for deletion link under Tools on the left hand side. I only check files that have been uploaded at least 6 months ago for the most part, but if you seen anything that really should be deleted, then just go ahead and nominate it. --Mjrmtg (talk) 20:37, 6 March 2015 (UTC)
Ok thanks I didn't even notice that button until you said that. Reguyla (talk) 23:34, 6 March 2015 (UTC)

Bots

You are receiving this message because a technical change may affect a bot, gadget, or user script you have been using. The breaking change involves API calls. This change has been planned for two years. The WMF will start making this change on 30 June 2015. A partial list of affected bots can be seen here: https://lists.wikimedia.org/pipermail/wikitech-l/2015-June/081931.html This includes all bots that are using pywikibot compat. Some of these bots have already been fixed. However, if you write user scripts or operate a bot that uses the API, then you should check your code, to make sure that it will not break.

What, exactly, is breaking? The "default continuation mode" for action=query requests to api.php will be changing to be easier for new coders to use correctly. To find out whether your script or bot may be affected, then search the source code (including any frameworks or libraries) for the string "query-continue". If that is not present, then the script or bot is not affected. In a few cases, the code will be present but not used. In that case, the script or bot will continue working.

This change will be part of 1.26wmf12. It will be deployed to test wikis (including mediawiki.org) on 30 June, to non-Wikipedias (such as Wiktionary) on 1 July, and to all Wikipedias on 2 July 2015.

If your bot or script is receiving the warning about this upcoming change (as seen at https://www.mediawiki.org/w/api.php?action=query&list=allpages ), it's time to fix your code!

Either of the above solutions may be tested immediately, you'll know it works because you stop seeing the warning.

Do you need help with your own bot or script? Ask questions in e-mail on the mediawiki-api or wikitech-l mailing lists. Volunteers at m:Tech or w:en:WP:Village pump (technical) or w:en:Wikipedia:Bot owners' noticeboard may also be able to help you.

Are you using someone else's gadgets or user scripts? Most scripts are not affected. To find out if a script you use needs to be updated, then post a note at the discussion page for the gadget or the talk page of the user who originally made the script. Thanks

Thanks for adding categories to several of the photos I uploaded. Bubba73 (talk) 18:51, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

No problem, I enjoy categorizing photos :) --Mjrmtg (talk) 18:59, 9 July 2015 (UTC)
I don't know the categories very well. Bubba73 (talk) 21:18, 9 July 2015 (UTC)

Interstate 95 in Camden County, Georgia

Do you have any plans to take more pictures along Interstate 95 in Camden County, Georgia? Because so far, I don't, although that doesn't mean I won't consider any. ----DanTD (talk) 14:46, 11 July 2015 (UTC)

It's only a 2 hour drive from my house, so pretty sure I'll get more there. I actually thought I had taken more in Camden County but after geolocating them I realized they were all in Glynn County (with one bordering Camden County). --Mjrmtg (talk) 17:13, 11 July 2015 (UTC)
File:Hard Rock Cafe Atlanta Steven Tyler.JPG has been listed at Commons:Deletion requests so that the community can discuss whether it should be kept or not. We would appreciate it if you could go to voice your opinion about this at its entry.

If you created this file, please note that the fact that it has been proposed for deletion does not necessarily mean that we do not value your kind contribution. It simply means that one person believes that there is some specific problem with it, such as a copyright issue. Please see Commons:But it's my own work! for a guide on how to address these issues.

Please remember to respond to and – if appropriate – contradict the arguments supporting deletion. Arguments which focus on the nominator will not affect the result of the nomination. Thank you!

Admin?

Hey man. Are you interested to become an administrator on Commons? I see that you are involved in administrative areas (tagging copyvios, filing DRs etc) and I think giving you the tools would be beneficial for the project. I can nominate you if you want to. Thanks! Jianhui67 talkcontribs 15:13, 18 July 2015 (UTC)

I'd be interested, but don't know what all it involves. I know I have "move" rights and am really careful about that. --Mjrmtg (talk) 21:15, 18 July 2015 (UTC)
Well, as an admin, you can close deletion requests, delete copyvios, block abusive users, protect and unprotect pages and etc. Have a look at COM:Administrators, COM:Guide to adminship, COM:Administrators/Howto and the relevant policy pages. Jianhui67 talkcontribs 08:21, 19 July 2015 (UTC)
I've read what you suggested and I'd be honored to be nominated.
Commons:Administrators/Requests/Mjrmtg - there you go. Accept the nomination and transclude it on the main RFA page. Thanks and good luck! Jianhui67 talkcontribs 10:17, 1 August 2015 (UTC)
Thanks for the nomination, alas it wasn't meant to be. I am an admin on another wiki site, but that question never came up. --Mjrmtg (talk) 13:37, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

Tijdcapsule

Hej! Regarding this move: there was no typo in the filename. The file name was not in English, but as far as I know that is not mandatory. Richard 11:15, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

I thought it was a typo, because the letter j is close to the letter m (on the keyboard), the letter d is close to the letter e (on the keyboard). Someone's finger could easily slip and put tijdcapsule instead of timecapsule. I'm sorry if that was not the case. --Mjrmtg (talk) 11:24, 4 August 2015 (UTC)
It wasn't, but it's not necessary to revert back to the original name either. It vaguely reminds me of this move, where someone changed a file name with the word 'file' in it. The Dutch word 'file' means 'traffic congestion', just like the German word 'Stau' that replaced it. That wasn't the first time someone translated a file name and I'm pretty sure it will happen again (sooner or later). Thanks for your time and take care. Richard 07:15, 5 August 2015 (UTC)

RfA

Just for the record, but Jianhui67 nominated you for adminship, not me. Best of luck a next time though! Trijnsteltalk 18:49, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

My mistake, thanks for your support :) --Mjrmtg (talk) 19:26, 4 August 2015 (UTC)

I-75 NB Georgia Welcome Center

You seem to know this area better than I do, so I was wondering about the "plantation house" at the northbound Georgia Welcome Center along I-75. ----DanTD (talk) 23:13, 4 September 2015 (UTC)

Is this a real plantation house with the rest area built around it, or a replica?
I will enquire locally and let you know :) --Mjrmtg (talk) 12:23, 5 September 2015 (UTC)
It is a replica. --Mjrmtg (talk) 16:23, 5 September 2015 (UTC)

reason for removing a category

Why did you remove the category National Register of Historical Places in Glynn County, Georgia from:

The photos are already in the Category:Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation which is under the Category:National Register of Historic Places in Glynn County, Georgia. It is redundant to have them in both categories. --Mjrmtg (talk) 10:08, 23 September 2015 (UTC)
OK, but if someone wants to look for photos of NRHP places in Glynn county, that makes it harder for them. Bubba73 (talk) 02:20, 25 September 2015 (UTC)
If they go to Category:National Register of Historic Places in Glynn County, Georgia, they will see Category:Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation is a subcategory. It would be like having a photo in the Category:Albert Einstein and Category:Physicists from Germany, or having a photo in Category:Glynn Academy and Category:Brunswick, Georgia. Please read [1] about over-categorization.

Photo misnamed

Original GA building

This is not the Wood Gym, even though it is made of wood. The Wood Gym was named after a person and is a brick building. This is the old GA building from something like 1830 or 1840. Bubba73 (talk) 05:23, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

You are correct, thanks for letting me know it was misnamed. --Mjrmtg (talk) 11:28, 3 November 2015 (UTC)

Thanks

Hi, sorry for my mistake! I didn't realize it at all. Thank you for your undo. --Elrond (talk) 08:47, 16 November 2015 (UTC)

Categories

Hi there. I see you added several photos I uploaded to categories by year, such as this. However, nearly all the photos are "circa". I even added that to the photo names, so adding them to a specific year is not correct. Perhaps one of us missed something. Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 23:42, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

I did notice they were circa, for the ones in 1904 do you think it is ok to put under 1900s in Georgia then? --Mjrmtg (talk) 23:45, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
Yes, thank you. I tried to find exact dates for the photos but they were all circas. Cheers. Magnolia677 (talk) 23:50, 20 December 2015 (UTC)

Main subject

As per COM:CAT, please stick to the "main subject" and "noteworthy features of the image" when categorising photos. The cars found incidentally in pictures of streets or buildings are not noteworthy.

For example, this file of the Lake Dogs hot dog venue illustrates its intended subject very well. However, I do not believe it to be very useful at illustrating Honda Accord (1997, North America) automobiles which the image is also categorised in because it contains a small glimpse of the said vehicle. By the same token, one could also add categories for the trees, the sky, power lines, the parking lot, the US flag, and the umbrella. These also make up a small/minority part of the image. However, none of these items contained within the image would be particularly useful for someone searching for a photo of a US flag or a tree.

Considering that most images of locations in built-up areas taken near a road will contain vehicles as incidental subject matters, the systematic categorisation of these vehicles cause massive over-categorisation problems.

If it bothers you to have these cars as "unidentified" so to speak (because there is not a category to specify exactly what they are), then Commons is better served by using annotations on the image itself or by placing a note in the description. Clogging up categories with junk seems quite counterproductive. OSX (talkcontributions) 04:15, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

The photos are not junk as you call them. If you cannot handle a photo that is not of a full image of the subject it is not my fault, the vehicle is still in the photo. There are plenty of photos that are categorized under hydrants where the hydrant is not the subject of the photo. --Mjrmtg (talk) 11:21, 18 December 2015 (UTC)
In the context of Honda Accord (1997, North America) automobiles, this file of the Lake Dogs hot dog venue is junk. My dictionary defines junk as being "useless or of little value". This file is exactly that if one is looking for photos of Honda Accords. Considering COM:CAT is quite clear in outlining that you stick to the main subject and you are actively ignoring this rule, I am left with no option but to revert your edit. If there continues to be an issue, I will have to take things further. Regarding the fire hydrant over-categorisation, this is not within my area of interest so is of little concern to me. OSX (talkcontributions) 04:54, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
You show me where it says a vehicle should not have a specific category if it can be identified. There is still an issue, you can take things further now. --Mjrmtg (talk) 15:24, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
I would have thought common sense would have been enough, but just for people like you we have Commons:Categories#Categorization tips which states that categories should be set based on the main subject and noteworthy features. For File:Verizon Wireless Store, Griffin.JPG, the main subject is the store, not the cars in the parking lot. Those looking for images of a Ford Edge (94 files in the category), Honda Accord (25 files), or VW Jetta (60 files) are not going to use an image of a Verizon store containing a glimpse of these cars. OSX (talkcontributions) 01:11, 22 December 2015 (UTC)
Other users also seem to agree that Commons:Categories#Categorization tips is sufficient: [2]. OSX (talkcontributions) 01:13, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

Florida School for Boys

Do you know if there is/was a sign for the school at the front gate? Do you know if it faces a public road? (I know in the case of Mississippi State Penitentiary they don't like you stopping in front of the prison but you can take a picture if your car is moving... so I took File:ParchmanGateNewPhoto.JPG while somebody else was behind the wheel) WhisperToMe (talk) 02:17, 30 December 2016 (UTC)

No, there is not a sign unfortunately. I did drive down this road up to the gate as can be seen in Google Street View but there was a security vehicle with someone in it so I immediately turned back down and away from the gate. [3] --Mjrmtg (talk) 13:54, 30 December 2016 (UTC)
Ah, I see! It's at a dead end. Since it no longer houses inmates I would have thought that the security guy would be okay with pictures, but you never know.
Anyway, thank you for taking the pictures! Even some exterior shots with no names/signs are useful!
