Do not upload copyrighted images to Commons

[edit]

Do not upload copyrighted images to Commons as you did for File:Meritamen.jpg, Meryatmón.jpg, and File:0000970785 OG.jpg. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content, that is, images and other media files that are not subject to copyright restrictions which would prevent them being used by anyone, anytime, for any purpose. Most images found online are not free. Please familiarise yourself with Wikimedia Commons licensing and the kinds of licenses that are accepted. Repeatedly uploading copyrighted images can result in a block. Merytat3n (talk) 01:54, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Pay attention to copyright
File:Meryatmón.jpg has been marked as a possible copyright violation. Wikimedia Commons only accepts free content—that is, images and other media files that can be used by anyone, for any purpose. Traditional copyright law does not grant these freedoms, and unless noted otherwise, everything you find on the web is copyrighted and not permitted here. For details on what is acceptable, please read Commons:Licensing. You may also find Commons:Copyright rules useful, or you can ask questions about Commons policies at the Commons:Help desk. If you are the copyright holder and the creator of the file, please read Commons:But it's my own work! for tips on how to provide evidence of that.

The file you added has been deleted. If you have written permission from the copyright holder, please have them send us a free license release via COM:VRT. If you believe that the deletion was not in accordance with policy, you may request undeletion. (It is not necessary to request undeletion if using VRT; the file will be automatically restored at the conclusion of the process.)

Warning: Wikimedia Commons takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

The photos are still copyrighted

[edit]

4.1.1 of the Louvre's terms of service is not an appropriate license for Commons. It specifically says that, while the images can be downloaded they are for any non-collective use within a strictly private context and for the following exhaustively-listed museographic, scientific and educational purposes. While they do allow reuse specifically in a private educational context, or for publications in the EU or by digital publications, they means that you can download a photo for your own personal use, or other museums may use them, or Egyptologists, but they are not freely available to anyone to use, including commerically, no matter what, which is what uploading to Commons requires.

Additionally, the Louvre's legal notice states: "Photographs credited © Musée du Louvre / [...] are the exclusive property of the Musée du Louvre and are used by the Musée du Louvre with the permission of their authors or rightsholders. Photographs credited © RMN, Musée du Louvre / [...] are the property of the RMN. Non-commercial re-use is authorised, provided the source and author are acknowledged. For any commercial and/or editorial re-use of an image from the collections of the Louvre and Tuileries National Estate, the Musée Delacroix or from the staging of exhibitions and other cultural events organised by the Musée du Louvre, please contact the photography agency Réunion des Musées nationaux et du Grand Palais des Champs-Elysées (Rmn-Gp)."

Here they specifically say photographs are copyrighted and that non-commercial use is allowed (ergo commercial use is not freely available). Images uploaded to Commons must allow commercial reuse. Please see Commons' licensing.

Further, Commons has discussed the Louvre's images here : photos of 3D objects such as statues, coins, etc, are subject to copyright. Merytat3n (talk) 09:31, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, sorry, I will be careful next time!
Btw is stock free images also copyrighted? Mentuherkhepeshef (talk) 17:08, 26 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, generally stock images are copyrighted but some are available under licenses accepted at Commons. You can check out some of the resources at media resources/Photography. Not all of the images on these resources will be okay for Commons so make sure to check before uploading. Merytat3n (talk) 07:41, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. Mentuherkhepeshef (talk) 07:50, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Permissions for File:Queen consort Hatshepsut.jpg will need to be verified

[edit]

It needs to be verified that the owner of the image File:Queen consort Hatshepsut.jpg gave you permission to upload the image to Commons under a relevant license.

Here is the necessary information from Commons: Volunteer Response Team:

  • "Please ask copyright holder to send a permission statement to permissions-commonswikimedia.org. We require that owners make a clear statement that they release the image under a free license; to help prevent confusion or misunderstandings we prefer one of the email templates be used. Permission grants must specifically contain a free license grant and may not merely give permissions for Commons or Wikipedia. If you have already uploaded the image to Commons, follow the instructions on Template:Permission pending."

Here is the email template for the owner of the image to follow: here

Once the owner of the image has sent the email to Commons, you can add this template to the image page to let them known permission is pending.

Let me know if you have questions. Merytat3n (talk) 08:11, 27 October 2023 (UTC)[reply]

This media may be deleted.
Thanks for uploading File:Queen consort Hatshepsut.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.

If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with {{self|GFDL|cc-by-sa-all}} to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with {{PD-self}} to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.)

If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there.

Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you.
