Tip: Categorizing images

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

There seems to be a problem regarding the description and/or licensing of this particular file. It has been found that you've added in the image's description only a Template that's not a license and although it provides useful information about the image, it's not a valid license. Could you please resolve this problem, adding the license in the image linked above? You can edit the description page and change the text. Uploading a new version of the file does not change the description of the file. This page may give you more hints on which license to choose. Thank you.

Don't worry, it's very easy:

Step 1: Choose a media file: Sound or video Step 2: Check the copyright status as best you can. The licence should (at the least) be plausible, given the time the recording and composition were made. (Ask me if you're in doubt) Step 3: Go to either Template:Motd/2010-07 (or Template:Potd/2010-07, which includes both PotD and MotD), and find a media of the day slot that hasn't been filled. Step 4: Click on "choose a new media file" (or your language's equivalent). Paste in the name of your media file, removing the File: prefix. For example, if you wanted to nominate File:Sor_Op_31_No_1_Rec_2.ogg, you'd paste in Sor_Op_31_No_1_Rec_2.ogg Step 5: Save that, and go back to the monthly setup page. Click the "Purge" button (if it isn't showing yet) and add any descriptions you wish to, by clicking on the name of the language(s) next to the display of your file.

I looked for your contributions to try and help, but it doesn't look like this is necessarily out of copyright under the license you quote: Official symbols laws mean that I cannot prevent you from performing an anthem, but doesn't mean that you can't copyright a specific performance of that anthem.

I tried to check the site where you got it from, to see if there was a release there, but the site's down. I hope nothing's going on in Georgia right now.

Can you try and check the site to see if it's released, and/or contact them to see if they'll licence it under (say) {{CC-by-sa-3.0}}? Adam Cuerden (talk) 22:35, 26 May 2010 (UTC)

Well, luckily nothing is going on :). In my opinion, the video gets under C) - c) information of events and facts. Information can be of different type - video is one of it's types. That's probably not the legal definition, unfortunately. I think they mean something like, if you write a non-fiction book, and someone else uses your research as part of their own book, you can't sue them. Adam Cuerden (talk) 06:52, 27 May 2010 (UTC)
