Tip: Categorizing images
[edit]
Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.
Here's how:
1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:
2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".
When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").
Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.CategorizationBot (talk) 18:32, 14 October 2011 (UTC)

Copyright status: File:Maritime Services 1.jpg
[edit]This media may be deleted. |
Thanks for uploading File:Maritime Services 1.jpg. I notice that the file page either doesn't contain enough information about the license or it contains contradictory information about the license, so the copyright status is unclear.
If you created this file yourself, then you must provide a valid copyright tag. For example, you can tag it with GFDL to release it under the multi-license GFDL plus Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike All-version license or you can tag it with PD-self to release it into the public domain. (See Commons:Copyright tags for the full list of license tags that you can use.) If you did not create the file yourself or if it is a derivative of another work that is possibly subject to copyright protection, then you must specify where you found it (e.g. usually a link to the web page where you got it), you must provide proof that it has a license that is acceptable for Commons (e.g. usually a link to the terms of use for content from that page), and you must add an appropriate license tag. If you did not create the file yourself and the specific source and license information is not available on the web, you must obtain permission through the VRT system and follow the procedure described there. Note that any unsourced or improperly licensed files will be deleted one week after they have been marked as lacking proper information, as described in criteria for deletion. If you have uploaded other files, please confirm that you have provided the proper information for those files, too. If you have any questions about licenses please ask at Commons:Village pump/Copyright or see our help pages. Thank you. |

Vandalism warning

I WAS NOT VANDALISING WIKIPEDIA! I WAS TRYING TO REMOVE MY PHOTOS!

- You have been blocked because you tried to revoke a free license by simply adding a speedy DR with "User request". If you have sold them to someone else this doesn't tangle the original license. --Denniss (talk)
So is there no way of removing my pictures? The main two I want to remove have only been used on wikipedia and a few of them have watermarks on them, one of them was cropped to remove the watermark (Is that right? Surely it should have been deleted). At the time I uploaded them I new hardly anything about copyright, since then I've Improved my knowledge a little. Recently it dawned on me what I'd done and now regret that decision.- Regards Megasam4256 (talk)
- You can't revoke a granted license, cropping out a watermark is perfectly fine but that doesn't tangle the license requirement to name you as the author. It is possible for you to specify the way you are attributed, if you want to have the watermark as attribution then modify the license tag by replacing the closing brackets with |attribution=the text from watermark}}. --Denniss (talk) 06:24, 8 September 2014 (UTC)
- To Denniss.
- Hi, So it doesn't make any difference if the two photos I would like removed were uploaded to flickr under the All rights reserved before I put them on here? I was only 15 at the time, I didn't realise how complicated it would be for me to simply remove my photos. I know we all make mistakes in life and I've learnt from this one, but I was being charitable with my photos. Finally, please can I have a straight answer, is there absolutely no way any of my pictures can ever be removed from here at all, will they be on here for the rest of my life for people to download, modify and use?
- Thanks for your time Megasam4256 (talk)
