MediaBot
[edit]Have you received permission to run this bot? (Commons:Bots) mahanga (talk) 16:26, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- Also, please mention who is the owner of this bot (User:Mdale) on the MediaBot user page. mahanga (talk) 16:29, 6 November 2009 (UTC)
- i am just a bot, i have no owner, at the mediawiki meeting at paris here, and daniel said i should just run it. since i plan to do some more cleanups it might be good to add the botflag. MediaBot (talk)
- You should follow the procedures here at Commons. Per Commons:Bots, you need to display the user of the bot on User:MediaBot. mahanga (talk) 19:15, 6 November 2009 (UTC)

- I have spoken to the people from Firefogg and they run this bot. Since it is now identified, I have unblocked the bot. -- Bryan (talk to me) 08:59, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
- I don't think you should have; they didn't file a bot request, and that goes against our policies. –Tryphon☂ 15:10, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
- there is a request at Commons:Bots/Requests/MediaBot — Preceding unsigned comment added by MediaBot (talk • contribs) 16:14, 2009 November 8 (UTC)
- It's not transcluded on Commons:Bots/Requests, so no one has seen it. And the bot operator must be a human, not the bot itself. –Tryphon☂ 18:43, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

Subtitles in Benkler-Video / Problems
[edit]The Subtitles did not work for me at first. I use Linux and Firefox. This is what I had to do: I changed language preference in Commons from German to English (perhaps not necessary), then I deactivated the Firefox addons Noscript, AdBlock plus and Flashblock and restarted Firefox. Then I saw a different player box with the subtitles. Perhaps this is of help. Greetings Longbow4u (talk) 12:43, 9 November 2009 (UTC)I think the addons were not the reasons. I sucessively activated them, and the subtitles kept working. Perhaps it was a temporary glitch.
- Very nice. How can I add German subtitles? It would be nice to have an edit box where you have for example the first subtitle language with the time index and the new language side by side. And you would have to add only the translation per subtitle box, and the time index of the first language is added automatically. Please keep us informed on the Wikimedia Blog Planet about the progress on this feature. Is it possible to display the subtitles as overlay on the video? If not, is this feature planned? Longbow4u (talk) 13:01, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
- I did a test on the following file: Image:051118-WSIS.2005-Richard.Stallman.ogg. I added (for the first minute) subtitles in English and German. So I encountered two problems. On the English subtitles: in a first run, I added subtitles 0 to 9 (first 30 seconds) and saved. After that, I added further 30 seconds of subtitles (10 to 19) and saved. Now it still only plays the version with the subtitles 0 to 9 and then stops. On the German subtitles, at first it does not scroll, only later it starts the subtitles. Perhaps this observation is of help. :-) Longbow4u (talk) 15:09, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
- After I deactivated the addons AdBlock Plus, Noscript and Flashblock again and restarted Firefox, the English subtitles continued the whole first minute (19 subtitles). Still, the German subtitles did not work. Longbow4u (talk) 15:29, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
- Translation interface for subtitles would be a nice to have feature, your problem with outdated subtitles can have several issues, but we also noticed some problems with cashing, something to look into.

Test file
[edit]I have completed this speech by RMS with subtitles Image:051118-WSIS.2005-Richard.Stallman.ogg in English and German. Perhaps this is useful for testing the subtitle function. At the moment, I cannot change between the languages. If I do, the other language does not work. So, if I want to see English subtitles, I have to switch my Commons User interface to English and restart the video. Then it works. If I want to switch to German subtitles, I have to switch to German user interface and restart the video. But, nonetheless, I think the subtitle function is a great improvement. I think this could be definitely useful for important (historical) speeches. Great work, thanks to all participating people who help make this work. Longbow4u (talk) 15:30, 11 November 2009 (UTC)
