WikiC – How to add GPS Coordinates to an Image Summary
[edit]Hello Massimo510:
I thought I would send you some extra notes on adding GPS coordinates to image.
Template:Location for
Camera location | View all coordinates using: OpenStreetMap |
---|
to add GPS coordinates.
Template:Location estimated for
The geographical information in this file was retrospectively estimated.
The location may therefore be somewhat imprecise. Verifying and refining these coordinates is strongly encouraged. |
as an option to place a notice that GPS coordinates are estimated and not uploaded from camera metadata.
While a good verbal mention of a location in the image detail is useful, a geocode (at least approximate) in the image description contributes to the usefulness and longevity of all bird, animal and plant images going forward at Commons.
GPS coordinates do not have to uploaded as meta data from the camera. They can be estimated and added afterwards up to 5 decimal places (non-exact but good enough) -18.91491, 47.54271. If you have less confidence in the estimate of the image location, you can reduce the precision of the GPS coordinates. -18.91400, 47.54200.
You can also find the location on Google Maps and pin-click on the best estimated point the image was taken. A pop-up with the GPS coordinates will display in both decimal and DMS GPS coordinates. Copy to clipboard for use in adding to Commons Template:Location in image description.
There are hardware geotaggers available that will detect the GPS location when the image is taken and imbed it with the image metadata in the camera.
Few full frame DSLRs have a built-in GPS sensor but GPS detection is available on almost all smart phones. There are usually apps available from the camera company that will let you add GPS coordinates to the metadata of your images as you take them, using your smart phone as the GPS detector.
As a post-processing option, some software programs like Adobe Lightroom can organize images and have a mapping feature that lets you easily find the place and drop the images on it, automatically putting GPS coordinates into the image meta data. Others like XnView MP (free for personal use) allow you to add GPS coordinates to the image metadata. When that image is then uploaded to Commons, the GPS coordinates are uploaded with it.
Best,
