Map of Sydney regions

[edit]

Hi Mapper2000, love the map File:Map of Greater Sydney Regions and Suburbs with Heading & Description.jpg! Do you have any sources for these areas? I've been puzzling over Sydney regions for a while and I'd love to know how you came up with this - it looks great though! - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 10:25, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Oh crap, I'm so sorry I edited your user page! That is totally by accident. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 10:27, 9 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hey Chris
Thank you for your kind words and for appreciating my work, I'm more than happy to explain my work but it's not necessarily compromised from one source.
I'm a Sydneysider born and bred and upon doing some research of Greater Sydney it occurred to me how little consistency and how convoluted all the online sources are when defining what areas are part of Greater Sydney, their titles and what areas fit into which category. I decided to dig deeper and take a look at existing maps of Sydney on Wikimedia Commons and Google images, The Australian Bureau of Statistics and their definitions and different levels of divisions, Sydney council local government areas both current and former ones which have been amalgamated, The land parishes of Cumberland County spread across Greater Sydney, the federal divisions across Greater Sydney, Sydney's postcode sequences, physical boundaries such as rivers, creeks, freeways, parks/reserves and of course making sense of all of the regions and their names by looking at their compass direction from The Sydney CBD.
I basically wanted to create an inclusive, specific and accurate map of Sydney that acknowledges the different parts of Sydney and groups everything according to 'areas' in their greater sense rather than what previous maps of Sydney have done which is creating larger oversized 'regions' encompassing neighbouring areas that don't have much to do with each other. To do this more accurately I looked at a terrain overview of Sydney on Google Maps and checked which neighbourhoods are actually connected with similar roads to determine if they belong within the same region or are separated. I also asked locals from all around Sydney and got feedback from Sydneysiders about how they view their own areas, their terminology and how they view their neighbouring areas to better understand this concept and not group completely separate neighbourhoods/areas together just because they're next to each other or because previous maps had grouped them together. I for the most part have stuck to traditional boundaries and terminology of the different regions of Sydney and felt it was also beneficial for simplification to further explain which 'areas' are part of which overview of Sydney e.g. central, eastern, southern, western and northern.
The largest areas which are grouped together and weren't easy to define are the 'western suburbs' and 'south-western suburbs' they could both easily be broken into two parts however I wouldn't know what to call them if they were nor would it be clear where to put a divide in the middle of each of them. I'm sure not every Sydneysider would necessarily agree with the regions and perhaps certain terminology but I have tried to keep things both simple and inclusive. If anyone were to ask me why certain suburbs are grouped into each category or the terminology I've used I will happily provide explanation, sourcing and the alternative boundary and terminology that I chose not to go with for a specific reason.

I think this is as good as any I've seen. The biggest issue with regions is that there is no official definitions for the regions of Sydney! Your is quite well thought through. However, where is Wollondilly Shire? That's literally next to the City of Liverpool and City of Penrith - the suburb of Wallacia cuts through all three LGAs :-)
One more thing - the LGAs are mostly not known as "Council of". For instance, it's not Liverpool City Council that encompasses an area but it is the City of Liverpool. The administrative body is the council, the area is the City. There are a few exceptions to this like Cumberland City Council‎ and Camden Council, but this is a gotcha for many (including myself!). - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 05:47, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much for the compliment, I am truly grateful you appreciate my work.
I wasn't aware of the difference between 'city of' and 'city council' I thought it was just pedantic semantics of councils changing their official titles. I remember years ago everything said 'Municipality of Woollahra' and 'City of Randwick' whereas now everything says 'Randwick City Council' and 'Woollahra Municipal Council'. But what you said makes sense. I guess 'City of Sydney' is also the exception as they never say 'Sydney City Council' for their administration. Appreciate the correction.
When focusing on the Sydney map I chose to focus on the more heavily urban, residential areas and I omitted the less urban, semi-rural areas which although may be connected to Sydney via highways and train lines are not necessarily always included as part of Sydney Metro nor do their neighbourhoods connect with Sydney's residential streets. These areas I omitted include Wollondilly Shire which incorporates portions of Blue Mountains and southern parts of Macarthur, Blue Mountains overall and anything past the Nepean River in both Penrith Council and Camden Council (including the suburb of Camden), northern parts of Penrith Council and The Hills, the southern regions of The Sutherland Shire, Holsworthy beyond the residential suburb, far western portions of Liverpool council and surrounds such as Leppington, Austral, Mount Venom etc, The Hawkesbury and The Central Coast. I wanted to keep the map simple with the regions of 'Outer North', 'Outer West', 'Outer South-West' and 'Outer North-West' to be as far as what is what is almost always considered part of Greater Sydney with areas like The Blue Mountains, The Hawkesbury, Wollondilly Shire, Holsworthy as a whole and areas of Penrith and Macarthur past the Nepean River generally all being very grey areas which aren't always included as part of Greater Sydney. I do apologise if I offend people from those areas who identify with living within Sydney as the map would have kept going quite far if I tried to be so inclusive and smaller areas on the map like 'Central Sydney' would have become much less visible. Defining the greater limits of a city's metropolitan area is never easy, nor is defining the regions within but I did my best with the information and knowledge I had. Oops, I’ve accidentally split this conversation over two pages. I really like your maps, apart from the LGA names (a very minor matter, TBH), I think you are pretty much spot on.
I’ve been going over the South West of Sydney taking extensive photos of the City of Liverpool. I you ever want to join me, let me know! :-)
Edit: there is no offence - in fact I think you are spot on. I live in Middleton Grange and have been extensively documenting the City of Liverpool. In fact, the outer edge Sydney Metro I would argue is probably Hoxton Park, but Austral and Leppington are an interesting case. Austral and Leppington are still incredibly rural (lots of market gardens supplying fresh vegetables) but is rapidly being developed for housing. Once you go past Leppington and Austral then it becomes basically rural, and is the very outskirts of Sydney. So I largely agree with your assessment. In fact, you can literally see it in on satellite maps! - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 08:54, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Orderinchaos: hey Andrew, check out this amazing region division! It’s possibly the most thorough and well reasoned view of Sydney I’ve seen so far. Mapper2000 has done an incredible job here and i know you’ve been fascinated by this sort of thing for ages now even though your focus is in Perth! Check it out, I think this is the most comprehensive regional categorisation I’ve seen so far. Really well thought through and with sn excellent basis of research. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 09:05, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I was almost going to list LGAs in the region description box of the map but I chose not to because I figured in time to come the map would become obsolete as more councils get amalgamated so I chose to just give a few suburb examples of each region in order to keep the map relevant for longer. Now with your correction of LGA names I'm very grateful I didn't list them on the map. Once again Thank you. Mapper2000 (talk) 09:17, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I think the amalgamations were more something the LNP were pushing, and the new ALP government is unlikely to change the boundaries. But yes, I think it was wise to keep the LGAs out of the map - suburbs do sometimes change boundaries but it is far less frequent.
If you get a chance, check out my wikishootme efforts in getting photos - I’ve covered a large amount of the City of Liverpool. If you are ever out my way send me a message and I’ll show you around :-) - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 09:41, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Chris. That's very kind. Mapper2000 (talk) 09:45, 13 June 2023 (UTC)[reply]

You are not banned here

[edit]

I thought I should note that you have not been disruptive on Commons, and have been a productive member. I think people need to stop thinking that Wikipedia policies and politics run across all projects. Whether you are banned on Wikipedia or not is irrelevant. I am banned on Wikipedia, but have been working productively here. I'm sorry you have to put up with the bullying you are getting from others. - Chris.sherlock2 (talk) 03:08, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Chris. I really appreciate the kind words as always.
I haven't actually been banned on Wikipedia as I don't edit Wikipedia and have no interest in doing so. My maps were made with the intention of being an informal eclectic example of Sydney's various colloquially defined areas which could be used on platforms such as Wikivoyage to help build a travel guide. I found most existing maps of Sydney including government maps failed to clearly outline what is Sydney's Western Suburbs as well as Sydney's South-Western Suburbs which was my initial motivation to creating the map so that I could try to give some sort of outline to how those regions look to a Sydneysider and then I did further research into Sydney's other regions which are also generally vague.
It seems some regions on my maps are currently the subject of controversial topics on Wikipedia causing a Wikipedia editor to come across my maps on Wikimedia Commons and speculate that I must be involved in whatever issues are happening over there and are now trying to get the maps removed from commons. I don't feel I've done anything wrong as I always thought Wikimedia Commons was a place that allowed for media that is open to the general public and is original creative content. I had no intention of ever using my maps on Wikipedia. Mapper2000 (talk) 05:28, 30 November 2023 (UTC)[reply]
