Hello, MWMG!
Tip: Add categories to your files
Tip: Add categories to your files

Thanks a lot for contributing to the Wikimedia Commons! Here's a tip to make your uploads more useful: Why not add some categories to describe them? This will help more people to find and use them.

Here's how:

1) If you're using the UploadWizard, you can add categories to each file when you describe it. Just click "more options" for the file and add the categories which make sense:

2) You can also pick the file from your list of uploads, edit the file description page, and manually add the category code at the end of the page.

[[Category:Category name]]

For example, if you are uploading a diagram showing the orbits of comets, you add the following code:

[[Category:Astronomical diagrams]]
[[Category:Comets]]

This will make the diagram show up in the categories "Astronomical diagrams" and "Comets".

When picking categories, try to choose a specific category ("Astronomical diagrams") over a generic one ("Illustrations").

Thanks again for your uploads! More information about categorization can be found in Commons:Categories, and don't hesitate to leave a note on the help desk.

Thorn, Horn, Kessenich

[edit]

Dear MWMG, I've recently changed the explanation of your image on "Thorn, Horn and Kessenich". The map would represent the geographical situation during the 18th century, but in fact this situation only existed until the Treaty of Utrecht, in 1713. That's why I edited the description below to "around 1700", but it would be even better and less confusing if you would simply change the description in the image from "18th century" to "17th century", since the map covers the entire 17th century. I would be grateful. --Wimpi (talk) 13:53, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Wimpi, the Treaty of Utrecht did not change the borders or status of the three principalities shown in the map, as these were not a part of the Spanish Low Countries. Therefore, the situation as shown in the image is correct up to the French annexation of the principalities in 1795. MWMG (talk) 19:49, 7 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Excuse me for the late response. You're right, the Treaty of Utrecht didn't cover the borders of Thorn, Horne and Kessenich, but confusion may rise because of the name "Overkwartier van Gelder". The "Overkwartier van Gelder" no longer existed because of the treaty, but was split up into a Dutch part (from Merum to Echt), an Autrichian one (region of Roermond) and a Prussian one (region of Weert). This means that starting from 1714 the name "Overkwartier van Gelder" no longer applied and the Overkwartier had several internal borders. To make this crystal clear, I propose to simply change the description in the image from "18de" into "17de", if that would be possible. --Wimpi (talk) 22:46, 2 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
"Overkwartier van Gelder" remained the common name for this region, even after the division, until the annexation in 1795, so I do not see any reason for confusion (cf. [1]). Moreover, the subject of this map is the three principalities, not the Overkwartier. Incidentally, Weert was not in the Prussian, but in the Austrian partition.
